Shadows of the Damned was a great video game

I remember the day this came out on gaf, and we went to like the game announced thread, and it was us trying to figure out if this was out or not.

I had to call my buddy and ask him to check the Gamestop, and they had it. It was like the most stealth release ever.

Some goofy shit, but ultimately I was surprised by how earnest the narrative became and I was one of the people who really loved the final boss/ending of it all. Yeah, it was great.

The game starts off good then takes a huge nosedive, just keeps repeating its self. It tries to add 'new' weapons by replacing your old ones but it's all just the same shit. Let's not get into the story and cutscenes, one of the enemies just says FUCK YOU FUCK YOU over and over again like this is DmC. It's pretty mediocre.

Great fucking game. Absolutely loved it, one of my favourite Grasshopper games. Hell I think a lot of their recent games are underrated in the gameplay department like Lollipop Chainsaw but especially SotD.

It was awesome, great companion piece to RE4 and a classic soundtrack. In Mikami I trust, The Evil Within will probably be another underrated gem.

I think I stopped when there was a section where you needed to run away from something, shoot, run, shoot, run. Just didn't play into the gameplay mechanics of the game at all.

I had planned on getting this at some point, but I completely forgot that it existed. I may have to track down a copy.

Edit: ordered it

I dunno, it looked cool. Played competently, but pretty damn forgettable overall. It's a the quintessential Suda51 game, more style then substance.

Really enjoyed this one, planning to revisit it soon. Far from perfect but enthusiastically over-the-top with excellent voice-acting and fun game play. Some of the humor did slip a bit too far into the crass zone but overall it was very entertaining.

Awesome game it was

I remember I really got tired of 'the darkness' at some point. And right at that moment the main character blurts out, "I'm sick of the Darkness!!!".

sigh, that was so good.

I couldn't agree more. What a fantastic game. SotD swallows you up in its kooky macabre atmosphere and keeps getting darker and weirder. I can't pile enough praise on the art design and soundtrack. The game oozes attitude.

Some people have issues with the gameplay, but I enjoyed it very much. This is a game that easily could have tripped itself up by making players struggle with awkward mechanics and excessive difficulty. Fortunately, the controls work, you have a satisfying variety of combat options, and it's tough to get stuck. I was in it for the story and I ended up loving the whole package. I should play Shadows again sometime.

It's a good arcadey RE4 type game which is something I wish we had more of. I just hate all the bits that change the gameplay. They just weren't fun.

I really wanted to like the game, but sadly it just didn't do all that much for me. The graphics were ugly as sin (something that is admittably forgiveable), but the gameplay just didn't do much for me, and quite a few of the levels were just too long, making for a tedious experience. I ended up loving Lollipop Chainsaw, but this just never did anything for me :/

I enjoyed the game enough to beat it, but there were a few aspects that I didn't enjoy, particularly some of the puzzle sequences and the crude humor. Now, I was crude humor as much as the next guy but I just found it very poorly implemented within the game.

Ha, makes me chuckle just picturing it.

This topic reminded me how much I enjoyed it as a Blockbuster rental when it came out.

Just went to ebay and bought one. Thanks, NeoGAF!

Absolutely loved this game when it came out. Paid full price and do not regret it. Shooting shit is metal and feels great. The visual style is pretty unique and it is one of the only examples I can think of where "the UE3 look" actually enhanced the visual presentation. The music is godlike. Bigboner is shit but it's only like 20 minutes of game. The 2d cutout levels are bad. But everything else is so creative. The way the game keeps introducing new shit is metal. Goats that emit light are metal.

The game creates its own wonderful, original lexicon of the underworld and its inhabitants. It is so great.

Game had a nice sense of style but the gameplay was incredibly questionable, the amount of invincibility frames on your roll... wtf were they thinking? Easiest game ever, just keep rolling in a corner and nothing touches you, hilariously bad.

Similar to Killer is Dead in terms of quality, which is to say not very good. Cool style but not much else.

This game did have the stinky crow storybook though so I guess I can't hate on it too much hah!

Seemingly the only people that enjoyed this are the same people that buy the shit that Suda and GH peddle out each year.

I bought it purely for the Mikami involvement and quickly learned to regret that decision. He definitely didn't have much of a role in development.

I liked it quite a bit, but I also like Suda 51 games...even though Killer is Dead was not one of his better ones in my opinion.

I take issue with the claim that the gunplay was tight.

It really wasn't. It was wonky as hell and suffered from being unresponsive at times.

I liked some of the level design and thought the story was pretty decent, but the gunplay and somewhat repetitive gameplay let it down.

I have to agree with this. I bought the game at launch, I loved the setting/evil dead homage/etc., but RE4 gunplay this was not. It was incredibly floaty and not very satisfying. Felt like RE4 with Skyrim combat. I played it on ps3, not sure if that makes a difference.

Legit love this game. Will never forgive its achievements though. Beating it on Hard doesn't unlock "beat the game on easy" achievement. Weird.

Those bedtime stories were dope.

Should really replay this.

It was super exciting and dumb and kind of broken and endearing and memorable and singular and infuriating and creative. I might play it again soon; there aren't enough games like it.

I loved this game. Only parts I didn't care for was the Big Boner level and when the girl starts chasing you then it became a one hit kill. I got it for $20 after trade ins when it released. It's a shame it never got the attention that it deserved.

It was alright. I had a good time blasting the enemies away (with The Dentist. To hell with the Big Boner), but I'm glad I got SotD for very cheap. Considering the whole package, I would have regretted purchasing it full-price.

Actually I think Suda is horrific and awful but he wasn't the director so tbh not sure what you're getting at

After Killer 7 I decided I would buy anything that had Suda's name attached to it. No More Heroes 1 and 2 were pretty good to great, I really didn't like Lollipop Chainsaw except for some of the boyfriend's lines, and this sits somewhere between the two. Still haven't been able to bring myself to finish Killer is Dead, kinda feels like a chore. Just went back to Killer 7 again instead, hahah.

Dat Yamaoka soundtrack, though. I hope they get him back for Silent Hills.
