Risky's Revenge is probably much closer to what this will be, give that a shot (it's free on iOS right now if you don't want to drop the $10 on DSiWare) if you're hesitating.
I actually already own Risky's Revenge (got it when it came out back on DSi), but then I ended up waiting for the original to come out on 3DS, wanting to play things in order. And then when it finally did my backlog got in the way. But yeah, even playing the original was enough to convince me (I'm assuming the sequel doesn't degrade really, right?), so now it's just deciding what I'm in for. Are there any music samples for this yet, other than the theme from the trailer? Or for that matter, did the music guy for this work on previous entries? Really trying to figure out how much I want the soundtrack.

The sequel is more refined in mechanics, but a little shorter and lighter in content (it was supposed to be episodic).

The composer is the same and livestreaming the creation of the first song for the game RIGHT NOW:

Listening to Jake Kaufman make the music for this game for the past couple of hours on the livestream has totally justified getting the soundtrack. Sounds awesome.

Hopefully they make enough for the animated cutscenes I'd like to see those. Kind of a bummer at their tiers though I mean I think alot more would budge if things like the beta access wasn't so pricey but at least its getting made.

So I started checking out the first Shantae through the eShop a while ago.

My thoughts:

...

I was not expecting this. It is...awesome. I love the structure of the game, the ability to talk to people in the towns, the way you browse through towns, the world connection. Ohhh lorrrrd.

Happy I backed this. I sort of wish that the official art direction was less cutesy, but that's my only gripe. I'm excited.

Man, I'd love to get to the animated cutscenes. To be honest, VA and cutscenes should be before all the extra chapters.
Yesterdays pledges picked up quite a bit.

It's getting pretty close to the $600k stretch goal.

If it continues at this rate, I'm going to take a guess and say that pledging could end at around $720k-750k by the end. Though I'm going by a conservative guess if we see a 20k increment each day over the lasts...which I don;t think is too unrealistic.

800K might be doable if we see an increase in interest on its last day. Though 900k or over seems like it might be too far out of reach.

They have about $20,000 in Paypal pledges (which will continue after the Kickstarter closes).

$800,000 seems like a possible longshot. I hope they can sneak that in, two extra chapters, more costumes and some red pigtails would make this game so much better.

$600k is a given, I feel. Even $700k - which now looks very doable - felt unlikely after the sluggish start; I was always confident the game would get funded, but wasn't sure if we'd see any extra chapters.

Since it sounds like WF already have established plans for the extra chapters, I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see them in some form down the line.

I missed this post the first time around, but interesting find. The early prototype almost has a Yoshi's Story look to it. It is pretty simaler to the game they are proposing now..

Even Shantae's earliest designs depict her with darker skin...

$7,500 more dollars to go before it hits $600k.

Completely forgot yesterdays last update:

Update #33 Tinkerbat Transformation Update!

More Tinkerbat Codes!

To those who have pledged $55 or above (or are planning to), lend us your ears! Previously we had stated that each backer is limited to ONE Tinkerbat download code. However we have just been given new orders by our Tyrannical Overlord.

Now, anyone eligible for the Tinkerbat Transformation who has reserved multiple copies of the game (at an additional $15 each) will receive an equal number of DLC codes. You are no longer limited to a single DLC code. So whether you want multiple copies on the same system, or on a combination of platforms, you’ll get that many Tinkerbat Transformation codes to activate your content. You asked and we listened!

Streaming Right Now! (This is already done ,but the archive video is available for watching.)

Jake "Virt" Kaufman, legendary WayForward composer and genuine man-about-town, is currently live streaming on WayForwardTV! He's composing the Shantae: Half-Genie Hero music right before your very eyes and ears so stop by and join in the fun!

Tomorrow: Mermaid Day! (which is actually today)

And speaking of WayForwardTV, join us tomorrow at 2:00PM PDT to watch one of WayForward's amazingly talented character designers draw a Shantae transformation from start to finish!

Update #34 THANK YOU! Stretch Goal Achieved!

With 48 hours to go, anything can (and will) happen! Thanks to your pledges we just hit the 600K Stretch Goal for a BONUS CHAPTER... that means the game will now have a new transformation, plotline, and boss sandwiched right in the middle of the main adventure... more game than before! And that's for BOTH Shantae and Risky Modes. Great job, and thank you for your enthusiasm and generosity!

We're very excited to work on this new chapter, which is all about Shantae entering herself in the Magic Carpet Races at Cape Crustacean.

Next Up: Costume Swap!

Our next Stretch Goal is one that many of you have declared your absolute favorite, and that's the Costume Swap! Shantae will dress up as Officer Wagon, a Ninja, or in her Beach Day attire! These costumes feature special abilities and rebalanced stats. If you're curious how this works, just download the iOS Shantae: Risky's Revenge (it's FREE for you guys right now) and try the brand new (also free) Dancer Costume, which offers twice the magic at half the defense.

Our 700K Stretch Goal will include:

--Officer Wagon Costume: ranged Pellet Gun attacks and increased armor (but may require power restoration by way of Heart Discs)

--Ninja Costume: additional speed, agility, and magic at the cost of defense.

--Beach Day: greatly reduced defense, but adds a few surprise moves (EX: throwing a beach ball at foes, sunbathe to restore Hearts)

48 hours remain -- let's make this happen!!

Today is Mermaid Day!

Reminder that today a member of our Animation Team will be on WayForwardTV at 2:00PM PDT!

We'll be designing the new MERMAID TRANSFORMATION before your very eyes! Tune in! We'll also have more randomness on the channel from time to time... check the COMMENTS page for up-to-the-minute information!

This looks great, I'm in for fifteen dollars. Shit, I've been pledging a lot on Kickstarter recently; might need to give it a rest for a while. I just love the closeness between developer and audience, and there's always such good communities around these projects because everyone wants them to succeed.
