SHIFT 2: UNLEASHED |OT| Is there still need for speed?

Great DLC cars there. More classic, old school stuff is more than welcome. Although, I feel that these cars were meant to be in from day 1 but someone got a little greedy.

Does anyone else have a problem with FFB disappearing during the game?
I'm using a Fanatec 911 and nearly every race start, or when idle at a menu, the FF just goes away until powering the wheel off and on. Fucking annoying and needs to be fixed asap.

already? the game isn't even out in the uk yet or has it even been out a week elsewhere. greedy EA.

I can trade in my copy of homefront for shift 2 today but i'm really not feeling it, EA have done nothing to get me that interested and holding reviews and info back was just wrong of them.

I have the same issue with my Fanatec GT2 on PS3.

Controller Disconnected messages and weird centring.

none. MS wheel here. i guess MS >>>>> Fanatec

(it really does seem to be limited to the fanatec wheels - maybe becuase they arent "officially" supported?)

the PS3 version is apparently using MLAA... I believe the bottom comparison shot is the 360 version, which is supposedly using MSAAx4.

Wow, the MLAA looks fantastic there. Take a look at the lines around the windshield in the second shot. Jaggy on 360, totally clean on PS3. Hopefully more developers start using this as it seems to be a great solution that doesn't kill performance.

How well does Shift 2 run on PS3, though? Haven't seen any videos.

The Dr. Pepper rewards are up, FWIW. There's a Dr. Pepper-themed 2010 Camaro, three Dr. Pepper events, and a cash bonus.

It's all available for both the PC and X360 versions of the game.

An easy recommendation for those who enjoyed the first game and great entry point to "real" racing in general.
If it wasn't for NFS: Shift I would have never been interested in sim racing. I'm sure I'm not alone in this.

If I saw that video before I purchased the game, I would have been convinced too. That was a joy to watch as I certainly felt the pressure.

Funny. I'm running the game at maximum setting @ 1920x1080p on my PC but, for some reason the frame rate stutters here and there. My PC is definitely powerful enough to run it smoothly as its an i7 @ 3.24ghz, 12GB memory @ 1600mhz, AMD Radeon 5770 running on Win7 64-bit. THe same thing happens on SEGA RALLY REVO on certain parts of the course, such as the mountain course. Its annoying and I don't have a solution.

Anyone?

I'm back on forth on this game. I'm a sim racing fan. I autoX/HPDE my own car and will be driving some track days this year but some of the sims are so boring (GT5). Some are great though (GTR2, even if dated). I think I'm going to hold out for a sub $50 half/ebay purchase on S2.

I race with the TC and ABS off (and all the other assists) and I can still stomp the gas out of corners with no effect on the tires or the stability of the car. That doesnt feel right. I prefer the feel of driving in GT5. That said, as a racing experience, it destroys GT5. Better AI, better sound, better graphics, and the helmet cam, at least in the lower end cars, is surprisingly cool.

I am playing this on Max settings at 1920X1080P and it runs silky smooth. I have an i5750, GTX260, and 4GB of RAM. I haven't once encountered slowdown or any other performance issues. I am up to level 8 and loving it (with the exception of the ONE repeating song....)!

I just have tried the game for 30 mins. I am loving the helmet view, it forces you to be aware of the car position and movement rather than using just screen references.

The graphics are clearly below Shift 1 but I have the feeling that it is for a reason. The lightining feels more real though.

The helmet view is great, it might not be perfect but It makes you feel there.
This is the first full price purchase I dont regret since Mario Galaxy.

I played the career for a good several hours today. Keep in mind I'm only a miserable gamepad peasant, but after finding a decent advanced control setup, (the out-of-the-box settings are still too twitchy), the handling feels more nuanced and tactile than Shift 1, but not on the level of the competition they were targeting. Even with the Elite handling model, Shift 2 doesn't live up to the MOST REALISTIC PHYSICS EVER hype, but like the first game, it's definitely enjoyable in its own way.

Alright, I bought this thanks to some of the more positive responses in this thread. I was one of those guys in the original Shift 1 thread, so I figured that would be my route with Shift 2.

WELL HELL THE FUCK NO

This shit is./...... I don't even have a word for it. It's some bullshit times 1000.

Is there a way to make it not look like someone smeared vaseline on my windshield? I can deal with motion blur. I play Crysis 2 untweaked and think it looks ace. This looks like a fucking alpha version of NFS 1. the LOD is hilarious! Signs are heavily pixelated until you are right up on them. Frame rate is shit, but it's stable at least. 30+ fps. Which is bullshit for what it looks like. Crysis 2 runs better. Hell, Arma 2 runs better.

So I've got every set to high. I liked the motion blur in Shift 1, so I don't want to completely disable it, but can someone tell me how to make this game not look like ten bags of dicks?

You bet:

Steering Dead Zone: 3 <-- Key Change
Accelerator Dead Zone: 5
Brake Dead Zone: 5
Steering Sensitivity: 50 <-- MOST CRITICAL CHANGE
Acceleration Sensitivity: 50
Braking Sensitivity: 50
Speed Steering Sensitivity: 100

I've been trying this one out and its still too twitchy for me. Very small movements on the stick heave the car left or right, and then my attempts at subtle corrections just make things worse. I can drop the steering sensitivity to zero and it still feels way, way too twitchy. Took me forever to find a setup I liked in Shift 1, and I guess this one is no different.

But my first impressions so far aren't good. The image quality for everything except night driving is jaggy and filled with noise. Detail is subdued and the colors super saturated so it looks like some demon child of Shift 1 and Forza. The sense of speed and cockpit shake has been tremendously reduced, which some will like, but it means I have even less feedback from the car. Sound is more tinny, even though the engines sound more growly there aren't enough bass tones to really satisfy. Rumble seems also almost nonexistent as well.

And last but not least there isn't really any true sense of grip, just like Shift 1. If anything, the physics don't feel improved as much as capped, like there is some governor that kicks in just before you do something too crazy and smooths things out, or more likely just ignores your inputs. I dunno. I'm definitely not feeling it yet.

Also, head cam is very disorienting at first, as you assume the car is moving and not just your focal point. You have to develop an instinct to tell the difference and not try to auto correct it - but I haven't been "helped" by it yet - if anything I've been training myself to make it less of an issue.

TL;DR: Disappointment, but willing to keep at it and see if things fall into place at some point. I felt more predictably in control of the car in Shift 1.

I haven't had much trouble with handling so fsr. I dropped helmet cam after Shanghai it was too dissorientimg in the tight turns. I only done the d event and the hot lap in the second

Yeah, I'm going to further tinker with those settings as well, but they should provide a baseline. Like in Shift 1, tuning cars individually is going to make the most substantial difference. Try buying some adjustable upgrades to unlock the tuning options, and then lower the steering lock and tweak the suspension. It's a pain in the ass, but at least you can save setups now, and tailor them to specific tracks.

OK. I found a way to make it better. Set AA to normal (I guess it uses a filter AA on high?) and turn off motion blur. You still get the same blur effects from shift 1 in the cock pit at high speeds, but it gets rid of the vaseline.

Tracks still seem barren.

Bought this game along with 2 friends yesterday - none of us were massive fans of Shift 1 due to the extreme difficulty and wild handling... so none of us knew what to expect, but we love it.

The handling is definitely improved. It's still wild, still makes RWD cars incredibly twitchy when smashing the throttle, and returning the car to stability after a turn is sketchy without an indepth tune - however it's alot more fun and doesn't make RWD cars completely useless like in Shift 1.

Autolog and online features are a great addition - there's not much to say. I love trying to best friends times, and testing new cars/setups to beat track records.

Graphics are fantastic. I'm not sure where the complaints are directed - but it looks better than Shift 1 to me. The trees remain a disappointment, but otherwise the lens flare/bloom, lighting (particularly night stages) and on track detail is all extremely well done. It's a shame that the cars look so hideous in the Garage, because I haven't noticed the same lack of detail or polish when racing... the cars look gorgeous during a race (or even stopped with the camera moving around them/friends).

Sound design is hit and miss. Numerous cars that sound amazing and ferocious, and just as many that sound ridiculously bad. The S15 has an embarassing exhaust/engine note when in cockpit view that I have never heard in any S15 I have driven in real life. Music is great, collision noises are great, tire screeching is reduced considerably... overall an improvement.

The difficulty is reduced which is something I am extremely happy with. The AI makes mistakes, can be spun/hit without sending you flying off the track and are not as mind numbingly 'perfect' as the Shift 1 AI drivers could often be. I'm not very far in the game, so I'm not sure if this will change - but so far, it's not nearly as punishing as the first game was.

A few things I'm disappointed in however. Online play is strange. I understand lag etc, but there have been multiple incidents where I will perfectly overtake a friend in an online race, and then he starts raging about me flipping him over. There was no indication on my screen (or rear view mirror) that he was tagged, so how am I supposed to race clean if I can overtake seemingly flawlessly while a friend gets smashed into a barrier. I have had the same shit happen to me - where I was tagged down a straight from what I assumed was a careless weave from a friend, only to cop shit from said friend, about how I can't drive in a straight line - he had no indication of a bump, and I was sent flying.

Car modification/garage is fucking horrible. The paint editor is all kinds of terrible and I am scratching my head at why they removed a colour wheel or something similar and instead went with 3 slider bars. It's not difficult to find your colour - but its cumbersome at best. Additionally, it's impossible (at least as far as I know) to tint your car windows a darker shade of black. It's either clear, or a colour - despite being treated as a paint job, when changing the sliders to a traditional black colour, the windows just return to clear again. Finally, there are confusing elements that make no sense from a design perspective. When changing the Rims, I have to apply a particular design to the front, then to the rear wheels - I appreciate customisation, but it's tiresome and unnecessary. More importantly, when I change rims, return to the performance upgrades, try bodykits/tires/suspension and want to see what the car looks like - the camera stays locked on whatever set of front/rear wheels I just changed. To see the whole car, I have to return the "visuals", select 'Paint' wait for the whole car to come back into view, then return to the performance category. Again, cumbersome.

Overall, a fantastic game. I was hoping that it would scratch my itch for Forza 4, but the low car count (140 sounds great, but it feels like 30-40 in game for some reason) and obvious design issues make it a sound distraction for the time being. Hopefully they iron out a few issues, get the DLC/cars into the game ASAP and possibly work on a way to make Helmet cam something other than a complete clusterfuck on tight tracks.

Rented this; returned it today. Was a bit sad to see it go, indeed.

I'll be on the lookout for a $35 deal or something.

Thumbs up overall.

After having a woeful time trying to drift with a wheel, I decided to give the gamepad a go.
Now it must be said, that the default controller and wheel settings are pretty dodgy to say the least. You MUST tweak the settings to find a good feel.

Anyway, drifting in this game is so satisfying, that I found myself doing it for a few hours on end!
I'm not a drifter, i'd rather circuit racing anyday, but the way it's been implemented this time around is pure bliss. Shift 1 had terrible drifting mechanics compared to SHIFT 2. It's miles apart. If you don't normally drift in games, as I do, give it a go, it's very enjoyable...

Note: The Caterham is amazing at oversteer!

I couldn't tell the difference. I couldn't even start a drift without the car spinning out each time using the wheel. After 5 mins of frustration I've shelved the drift races again and moved on.

You're right about one thing though: You need to change the wheel settings else the game feels loose and unresponsive.

uh oh --- just played an event with the elise and the car was bouncing up and down hysterically when idling pre-race. a sign of wonky shit to come later in the game like shift 1 before patch, or just a goofy hiccup in an otherwise much improved game? either way, i kept restarting the race to watch it, i was mesmerized by the funny!

also, played with the pad last night --- definitely took getting used too with default settings. its twitchy as hell and way easier to find yourself swaying or fishtailing back and forth out of corners. i did eventually get used to it and was successful, but the level of concentration to not completely blow was much higher then with a wheel. pad only gamers, take note, try before you buy if possible.

720p60 footage, and also 1080p30, played with the fanatec wheel.

Excellent work as always.

But WTF at all the bird shit constantly landing on the windshield. Which Einstein at EA thought this was a good idea? It's kind of funny the first time, but I think I counted at least 6 times on the Ring alone. Most people go many years between a "landing" on their windshield and this is happening every 30 seconds. If they don't already have the option, they need to add a checkbox for Bird Shit on/off.

Jeez. Just watched Laguna Seca. It's a veritable shit storm out there. Some games have a piss filter, this has a shit filter.

Well, that's my point. I ditched the wheel for drift and used the pad. A world of difference.

@op_ivy, same thing just started happening to me as well!
It wasn't there for the first couple of days of playing but has now popped up.
Why would it start happening all of a sudden?

Nope, using the ms x360 gamepad... but using default control sensitivity. It's centering and wild oversteer and correction needs tweaking.

Was it the Exige invitational at Suzuka West? The race with that car was a handful; the Exige take a fair bit of effort keep in check in this game, and I must have restarted 20 or 30 times. :lol The starting line bouncing after a restart is definitely not limited to the Exige, (although it's not nearly as pronounced with other cars).

Random aside: is everyone else getting an absolutely obscene amount of Big Mac ads? I know it's probably Massive or something, but it's ridiculous seeing nothing but fucking Big Macs on every single one of the dozens of billboards they have around the tracks.

Which brings me to the extraneous trackside scenery. I know they're trying to inject more "atmosphere" into the circuits, but the amount of billboards, banners, amusement park rides, Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parades, and whatever the hell else they've got is seriously overdone. I thought this shit was going to be toned down in Shift 2. Spa, (which is already the best track in the game), is the notable exception-- it's positively barren in comparison and even better for it. I miss the old layout though.
