sigh... I still dont like RE4

+ RE4 PS4 has a control option to put aiming onto RS, which makes this game easier to play, because the over-the-shoulder view makes aiming on RS the muscle memory hardwire due to almost all games using that set-up now. To my knowledge, no other console version of RE4 had this controller option. So shooting is a lot nicer this go around.

- But the camera is still just as fucked as ever, not being able to rotate it fully. It really gets to be a nuisence when multiple enemies are around, and somehow I always seem to end-up running right when I want to go left, or something? It's like a half-step between tank controls and regular modern 3rd person controls, and it just doesn't work at all. I've had to over-rely on the 180' quick turn to get out of dodge and then re-start, rather than struggling to run/turn to the side using the movement/camera. The game still isn't fun to actually play, but this is the closest I've ever come to liking the controls so far.

Different people like different things, I think RE4 is designed around its controls though, but I realize I'm not as bothered by certain control schemes than other people. I do find a lot of people who don't like the controls at first adjust a couple hours into the game, but that's also not universally true. Just something I saw many share with the recent PS4 Remaster.

But it's okay if you don't like it, RE4 has certainly found its audience already and is considered a classic by many, but nothing is liked by everyone.

Don't keep playing it if you don't like it.
But, if you want to give it one last shot RE4 Wii edition is preferred by many for its controls

I've only played RE4 on PS2 and Wii, but Wii's controls were so far superior. IR aiming and the quick nunchuck shake (I think?) for the knife made getting through a lot of situations so, so much easier than the janky original aiming.

Just don't try to play it like a modern 3rd person shooter and play it for what it is. It's perfectly designed for the controls it has and would not work as well if it had different controls.

Resident Evil 4 is amazing, but I wouldn't consider it "for everyone."

If you aren't digging it, it's fine. I think all of us love games people hate and hate games people love.

The gaming community and it's member can't like literally all the same games.

I have the issue with the Last of Us. I also actually like Uncharted games, but never think they deserve GOTY. They are just non-sense big budget action game. Whateves.

I only ever played the Wii version, which had absolutely fantastic controls. Not sure I'd ever want to play it any other way. It's amazing how well it holds up all these years later, it has such an impeccable sense of pacing that feels so much more modern than a lot of the shooters from that same era.

Honestly, I adored the game on GC when it first came out, but hadn't played in years. Got the game for PC and the controls are fucking brutal for me to get used to. It's just so different from every other shooter in how it operates.

OP, do not approach in a "But why can't I do that?" way but with a mindset like "Ok, how do I play the game best with the controls it has."

Did a similar thing with RE5 and 6 and ended up having quite some fun with them. It's all about expectation. Stop thinking about what it doesn't let you do and work with what it does.

As largely a PC gamer, I've never liked analog sticks for aiming, so playing through RE4 on GameCube was a real slog. Picked up the Wii version and it improved my experience dramatically.

Stop trying to think of the game as a FPS or trying to play it like one and you might enjoy one of the best games ever made.

I know the feeling when everybody seems to be loving something but you just don't get it.

I myself love RE4 even though I played it for the first time only two years ago. But there are plenty of classics I really dislike. Ico, God of War and Mass Effect for example.

There's not really such a thing as "over-relying" on the 180 move, it's there for a reason and is EXTREMELY useful.

Also, the aiming is really better on the left stick since your already resting on it and using it. Right stick is pretty much useless aside from a few small parts (ie; looking for beartraps). Since you can't move anyway, it's easier to aim using the stick you are already using.

meh i agree. not so great i did enjoy it,
But resident evil on the 3ds was way better ,

That boat just nailed it.Heck i enjoyed that one over the resident evil 7

Ugh

Back+A is the greatest invention ever.

The restriction on movement and camera is part of the game. If you get frustrated because you're losing with it, that's by design.

That said, TLoU is a game I'll never understand why people like in terms of game play.

I would highly recommend checking out The Evil Within now if you want something similar to RE4 but without the jank of the control style. I skipped it on release but since RE7 came out I had been checking out the old Resi games and came across The Evil Within along the way. So glad i did come back to it because it satisfy everything I wanted from a game after RE4 that we didnt get with 5 or 6.

THIS is how you are supposed to play. Get good.

Skip it then. You don't even have to watch the ending on YouTube. It's influence was purely mechanical (and pop cultural, in the case of shitty 'what are you buying' memes) but even this is overstated.

First and foremost, this is not like any other third person shooter. The controls and camera are the way they are for a reason -- the way you play RE4 is fundamentally different from most other games.

1. You cannot "over rely" on the quick turn. It's designed to be exactly that, turning quickly. I would not play an RE4 where you did not quick turn every five seconds or more.

2. It is not a standard third person shooter. Your general flow of combat, when facing multiple enemies, is to run away, turn back around, and choose where to aim on the enemies as they are funneled toward you. If you are trying to aim at enemies who are far left or far right on your screen, you need to stop aiming and start moving. The decision between shooting and moving is a very deliberate one, and is why you cannot do both at once.

3. It is incredibly important where on an enemy you are aiming. Chest shots are useless and should only be used if you know you're too panicked to take the time aiming at anything else. Try aiming at knees or faces, and be ready to shoot an axe out of the air if you see one heading towards you.

4. The Wii version is good, but nullifies a lot of the games design. I would recommend continuing on the "regular" version first. But, the Wii version is still very good, and is ultimately still the best version of the game to date, until the HD mod by wesker on GAF is done.

5. The most powerful weapon in the game is Leon's hot bod. Use the melee. Become the melee.

RE4 is a masterpiece and never had any issues with the controls, they are just different and were made before third person shooters like gears of war and uncharted were released.

Brutal and violent. Every weapon feels like it has a great impact, managing resources similar to RE makes for some tense segments.

I have yet another chance to play the game, so I might just marathon it at least so I can feel up to date, but I found even Battlefield Hardline to have more engaging encounter design.

That said, OPs post makes me very sad that games like Lost Planet never took off because it had interesting controls.

It's okay, don't worry. Some people just don't have souls.

More seriously, maybe you should play it on the Wii. Best version by far, the motion controls are so good. And if you still don't like it... Well, that's fine.

You picked the worse version of RE4 to play. The PS4 port is fucked. I played the gamecube release, the PS2's, the Wii's and the PS3's, and they all played the same. But for some reason, the PS4 version was fucked. I returned it to EBGames the day after I bought it. There's a bunch of stuff, like a massive deadzone, weird diagonal aiming, and some other stuff I forget. I believe I posted all of this in the game's OT.

Don't worry, you're not alone. RE4 is still the most overrated RE4.

Invoking the usage of shitty gimmicks does not constitute a superior control scheme. Traditional controls are far and have always been better than that shit.

I don't like RE4 much either!

Still trying to force myself through it, but yeah I'm pretty much with you OP. But I have more problems than the camera and stuff, like with its level design and tone. I know a lot has to do with the fact that I'm playing it for the first time pretty much now instead of when it was released, but whatever. Unfortunate, but glad RE7 is here to shake things up back to where I want Resident Evil to be :3
