Silent Hill HD Collection: New Screens/Video

Isn't SH3 the one that explains everything regarding the lore of Silent Hill?
I remember people being upset that it removed the mystique of everything.

Not really. They never skimped on explanations for everything directly pertaining to each game if you took the time to read and piece things together. Some people dislike 3 for various reasons, but overall it's pretty well liked. All of the abysmal rushed, uninspired and outsourced games that followed probably made people appreciate it much more in retrospect.

And this collection? Thumbs down from me. I can tell from those shots that the volumetric effects are dialed back severely from the PS2 originals like they were in the xbox ports, the new shadows are ugly as sin and what I've seen instills no faith in the kind of accuracy they're aiming for. And I'm not even touching the VA issue. It may not have been great but it's still part of the original experience. Legal issues or not, if they wanted it to happen they could make it happen. I don't buy their excuses.

edit - huh, somewhat old thread is somewhat old

Shattered Memories deserves to be part of this :(

SH3 is kinda meh. Really bad pacing/story/finale. It does have the best visuals but 4 is the more interesting game.

I just... there are so many bizarre opinions in this post that my brain actually had no idea how to respond beyond simply shutting down.

I just time traveled to 2010 and ganged up on you at skiesofwonders party while complementing you on your podcast.

Never played any Silent Hill before, but always hear people talk about them. Will pick this up and finally give them a try.

Hmmm I hope they get sold separately on my PSN store. SH2 looks alright but like everyone has said SH3 looks weird and too clean.
With as inconsistent as Konami has been with releasing media to the public for the SH games lately, it's likely not going to be as clean as what we've seen. I would hate to be in Konami's shoes if they were to go on and release SH3 and one of the adjectives to describe it was "clean." It's probably the filthiest (in a good way) game ever made, visually. People would lose their minds.
Aw, who am I kidding, Konami doesn't freaking care at this point. Still, I think all of the problems we've seen with missing elements of the game are going to be present in the final release.

I tend to disagree with most of the posts I see coming from you (at least, if memory serves), but I agree.
Well, other than SM making it in the collection. There's no way that was going to happen with how recent it is.

The good news is that even if neither of these games appeal to you, there's enough variety between titles that there's bound to be something you will enjoy. That is, if there's enough in the games you play to interest you enough into trying the others.

I don't think the noise effect was enabled for some of those screenshots for whatever reason. I remember turning off the effect in the PS2 versions and it makes it look really clean too.

Also, new comparison video. It seems they changed the music a bit too.

I'm a little bothered by the lack of the fog and that they changed the beautiful acoustic music when James is talking in front of the lake. The music isn't a big deal as it is the same song, just an odd change.

I've played HD Silent Hills on the PC LOL XD And the screen of the HD Collection looks very similar to the original PC version =P Sorry Konamy, i've already that HD Games XD

I don't mind the new voices that much, and yes, changing the music feels very odd after having listened to the original so many times. In the last part of the video it becomes very apparent though, that the new voices have not been lip-synced! That takes me way more out of the game than the "stilted" delivery of the original dub ever did.

The limp synch is fucked up (not much they could do about that, since they can't change the script one bit) but i think Troy Baker is doing a fine job there, Angela's voice too is good.
Mary's voice is completely misscast though(i know it was Konami's decision, and not Mery Elizabeth's, still doesn't fit).
Also i think James was more awkward(in a good way) and spot on with the higher pitched voice of Guy Cihi.
Troy Baker is a better actor, and it's going all emotionall etc etc, but it removes some of the sillyness from the character, which was a part of James, imo.
James being goofy and frail, goes better with
the twist at the end, of him being a murderer
, makes him more clueless and disoriented.
As for Mary, all we see of her in the game is
from James' memories and delusions, in his mind she is angelical and delicate
, so the original voice is incredibly better to convey this.
Mary Elizabeth's voice is too deep and strong to work in that fashion, and infact, the intro has a completely different vibe, with her voice.

The electric guitar version of the intro is kinda shit, too.

So basically:

acoustic > electric
Troy Baker > Cihi (as far as acting)
Troy Baker < Cihi (as far as pitch)
Original Mary > new Mary
Original Angela < new angela
+ Lip Synch problems.

Oh god, lipsync is totally off for new VA.
new james sounds creepy at the start almost like
a murderer
The new Mary sounds like an over-the-top-sexualized hooker. The original felt like a real loving girlfriend/wife. And the scene with Angela is also totally ruined. The original VA there felt somewhat strange, almost dreamlike or somewhat "off", but that just added to the strangeness factor. In the new VA all that feeling is gone. It sounds like a sitcom or a regular TV series. I mean Angela was not meant to be a normal person being there.

man, what the hell? new actors, new music, shitty graphics and missing effects....lately these hd collections have started taking a turn for the worse.

I think the recast is fine, and it will be nice to listen to it playing through the collection. I've heard the original so many times that I think this preview kind of has me excited to see how the new ones interpret a few scenes.

My one regret is that Mary's voice is too sultry. I think that's a fantastic match for Maria, but I wish MEM would have done a little something to make it less Maria-ish. Still, if that's my one issue, I should be okay.

Yeah, lip-sync is pretty bad. It'll be like watching a badly dubbed anime or something. : P

Anyhow Silent Hill 2 is NOT the problem, since it has the original track in it.
Now Silent Hill 3 on the other hand..
It's funny how all the drama surrounding SH2 months ago made most people completely forget there was another game getting the same treatment. Whoops?

Heather sounded fine from what I remember, but it was just brief clips of sound, so hard to tell.

Angela sounds much better. Troy Baker does a respectable job as James.

Maria sounds too sultry and moaning, like she is sighing after each sentence. It's kind of annoying.

Lip synch could be better

Don't know why they changed the music. Does not make any sense.

Even if they has to rerecord it not sure why they those to use an electric guitar over an acoustic. Pretty much agree with the above.

Its a shame about the lip-sync, but what are you going to do? If they have to stick to the original lip sync that really limits the new actors.

Awful lip-sync ruins any benefit new voices provide.

The new James, while better acted, doesn't suit the character. As UrbanRats said, Cihi made James sound awkard, confused and silly. Baker sounds too serious, much less emotional.

MEM sounds not so good as Mary; original Mary sounds like a sweet loving wife who dreams about a visit from her husband. New Mary sounds as if she's disappointed, as if she's reproaching James. Maybe that was the intent, but I prefer old Mary; she's more welcoming and that, in the end, makes it easier to feel sorry for her.

The new Angela finally sounds like a teenager, but the old one sounded "off" and that gave her character more depth (especially in the final, when it's obvious that there's something wrong with her).

New music is bad. I have no idea why they even felt the need to change it.

And is it me or are CGI cut-scenes stretched to fit widescreen? And they seem to be pretty blurry too.

It's not like they're available anywhere. They're pretty expensive used too.

You can get one for about $50 on eBay.

Pretty much my thoughts too. Well said. The new music oddly sounds like a Youtube Yamaoka cover.

$50 isn't cheap... Is that new or used?

It's the only collection released in which I haven't played either game, so I'm very excited to check it out. I can care less about the new voice actors since I didn't get to experience the old ones. I can most definitely justify buying this for whatever price.

So the HD re-release has worse lighting than the original PC release?

Will this be released for Vita like all other Konami HD collections?

I can't wait to buy this and play both games and enjoy the hell out of them. I haven't played any Silent Hill game in the series before so none of these changes to the original versions should bother me.

Do I really have to play the first Silent Hill or can I just skip it? If skipping it makes some parts of the story in the second and third game less awesome or if it's just a great game, then I'll play it.

You don't have to play SH1, but I'd recommend you to do so, because it's still a great game, and because it'll make it easier to understand what's going on in SH3.

For a game that isn't sold new anymore for few years now I think it is.

That doesn't make sense. Just because it's cheaper than others doesn't make it cheap. I was responding to the person saying just buy the PC version since it's the same if not better visuals when it's many times the price of the HD collection. It's not really the same at all.

Considering the prices asked for games like Rule of Rose and American McGee's Alice, $50 isn't too bad.

Ya, but you can get Alice on DD and that's only for boxed ones right? You used to be able to get the jewel case rerelease ones they did for dirt cheap.

Guess I'm buying it then. Your salesmen techniques are unmatched.

Enjoy it :D And don't be afraid to use a walkthrough if you get stuck. One of the puzzles had me scratching my head for quite some time when I first played the game back in the day.

I don't think Alice is available as DD for PC anymore, as it was a limited time offer where you could buy the Complete Collection off Origins and get both the original and Madness Returns (it's still available for PS360, but you need a copy of Madness Returns to play it). Correct me if I'm wrong. The boxed versions are the most expensive, yeah. I'd buy one if they weren't so hella expensive.

Did they pull it? Figures EA would do something stupid like that.

That Kotaku video made me so sad. So, so sad...

So many of these HD remasters are SUCH wasted potential. I'm gonna go cry while clutching my PS2 copies of SH2/SH3 to my chest in a fetal position.

Did they pull it? Figures EA would do something stupid like that.

They made the Alice 1 "remake" exclusive for pre-ordering on the Origin store - any other retailer or DD store didn't get that opportunity. After the game was released, the offer expired and now the PC version of Alice 1 remake is impossible to buy. Thanks to EA.

They didn't really pull it, as they made it clear when Madness Returns released that the Complete Collection was a limited time offer that would only be available on Origins. Once the offer expired, no more original Alice HD for PC.

I bought the Complete Collection, the PS3 version and the retail PC version. I want more Alice dammit *shakes fist*

Plus, the first game is still very enjoyable, so playing it is always a good thing. : )

Silent Hill 1 is still scary even until now actually.

Ah, I miss understood then. I knew the remake was exclusive but I thought they were selling the original game by itself also.

I still have to play madness returns but I hoping it's good since everything I heard said it's a lot better than the first.

Another game with missing effects and such -_- Konami I am not pleased. First MGS with missing features and now SH. You better make ZOE true to the original releases.

I doubt we'll ever even get one. Plus it's pointless to do both, second runner is the only one worth redoing. I still don't think I could replay the first one again after how much better the second one is in every conceivable way.
I like the first game for what it is, but Madness Returns is a much better game.

Ya, that's what I heard. I loved the first game though.

Heather was terrible in the new clips. She sounded like a 12 year old.
