Sleeping Dogs PC Performance Thread

So eh, there's still no fix for the stuttering? Since when did every PC game ship with stuttering? Lately it's been (for me): Sleeping Dogs, Deus Ex HR, Battlefield 3, Arkham City, Fallout: NV. Seriously, what the fuck?

Yeah, it's a pretty common problem. It's just like there are too many factors to calculate for PC devs. For New Vegas, there is a fix.

Is there a way to improve AA without the massive fps hit that Extreme gives you? Currently going at High AA, but it's kind of blurry, probably because of the FXAA. Also, it's not as sharp as I would like, but Extreme cuts my fps in half.

Ok I'm running a 670SLi rig and my benchmarks are for 1600p with everything extreme except for AA set at high:

Min FPS: 17
Avg FPS: 37.8
Max FPS: 9.9

What the fuck. I thought the SLI stuff was fixed.

Try downsampling. My PC can't handle anything other than the lowest AA setting too well (stuttering, uneven framerate etc). But for some reason it can do downsampling from 1440p to 1080p just fine and still yield 60fps most of the time on my GTX570. Looks superb combined with the in-game FXAA too, so no need for SMAA injected (the idea of two post-process AA methods on top of each other makes me puke!).

Also, I advise anyone with performance issues to lower SSAO first - on high that can destroy your framerate.

Man what gives... running windowed completely removes the stuttering but for some reason makes the game look much more jaggy.

I haven't even been able to play it because of the HKship.exe crash at the very first intro screen and when I start a new game. Tried updating drivers etc but still nothing. It's an absolute joke that this is still a problem so long after release, this shit should've been fixed already.

If you're downsampling then running windowed will cause that to not work correctly and look jaggy.

Ah, that explains it :'(

Bloody hell, if there is a "solution" to this problem ( in this case running the game in windowed removed 100% of all the stutters ) then surely it would be "easy" to fix this would it not? Or atleast hack-patch it somehow.

It's been a while since I've played Sleeping Dogs, but I seem to remember the 30fps cap fixed my stuttering problems.

This is a reoccurring issue I've been having and it's becoming annoyingly more common. In Fullscreen mode a game will stutter, in windowed mode the issue disappears. That's why I always want fullscreen windowed mode with every game and if a game doesn't support it natively, I find utilities to force it. What causes this!? Countless games. The difference between fullscreen and windowed mode, it's night and day. In most cases the framerate remains 60 fps but the game stutters obviously. This happened with my 5850 and continues to occur with my 7970.

I actually have severe stuttering issues that makes Assassin Creed Brotherhood unplayable with vsync enabled and I'm convinced that windowed mode would completely fix it due to my experiences with other games but the game doesn't support any windowed mode to even try. I avoided Revalations because I believe that game does not have a windowed mode either and am afraid AC 3 will have the same problem.

There is nothing gaming related that I would like to see more than this issue to go away. Argh!

For those troubled by the disparity between performance between windowed and fullscreen, you might want to see if ShiftWindow helps. It's pretty simple to set up.

http://grismar.net/shiftwindow/

It effectively runs any application in windowed mode but forces a fullscreen display of the window's contents. I came across it as a (fantastic) solution for FFXIV's horrible tearing issue that's native to fullscreen.

I will definitely look into that. Right now there is always a possibility that a game will suffer from this issue and will not support native windowed mode, like AC Brotherhood and I'm just screwed.

Edit: I gave it a try with AC Bro but it didn't work with that game. I created a separate window but the game graphics would freeze and flicker. Thanks for the tip though. Maybe it will help in the future.

Finally finished it. The final stretch is really great.
What an excellent game, will buy a story DLC in a heartbeat.

edit: was meant for the OT ;)

i5-2500k, HD7870.. with AA on high I get around 45fps average (gameplay, benchmark says 50 something) which is fine but with AA on normal I get 60fps most of the time and it's nicer. How do I set it to render at 1440p and downsample? I've seen it mentioned but not how to do it. I changed the resolution in the display settings xml and it didn't seem to do anything. or are you guys downsampling on a graphics card driver level?

I have a problem with 3D mode by the way. I hooked my PC up to my 3DTV and enabled 3D and the TV instantly detected it, which is great. But when I move around in-game it looks like the convergence (or whatever the term is for the "distance" between each image) changes. Like when I turn the camera, one of the images lags behind a little bit. This is EXTREMELY disorientating in-game as the depth essentially changes when there's a lot of movement. Standing still looks fine (amazing even) but obviously you don't do much standing around in this game. Anyone else have this issue?

Did they ever release a patch for the stuttering issue? At night I get a smooth 60fps but during the day outside I get around half that or less. I have a 560ti and a AMD X6 1090T

Sadly no.

Dammit, I'm suffering stutter too! It makes the game a bit disgusting but I'm still going to endure because the game is awesome. D3DOverrider helped (better than the in-game VSync and FPS Limiter) but it still there! And for some reason I can't bear the 30fps limiter that removes the stutter after seeing 60fps. So I'm screwed...

I can't get past the initial loading screen. I'm not too upset since I'm in a Borderlands 2 phase right now, but it would be nice to run a few benchmarks or something. Anybody else get this problem? I'm running a pretty beefy system with a GTX680, so I know I'm within minimum specs.

Try playing the game in windowed mode. That was my last refuge, no other fix to it for me but playing it in windowed mode removed 100% of the stuttering.

If you have D3DOverrider, try disabling detection for the .exe or close D3DOverrider overall. If not, then try reinstalling. If neither of those work... then explain your situation and specs and setup further.

I'll try that, but I hate the Window's borders =( ... I'll look into Toodles Shiftwindow recommendation unless you know another way to get rid of the top and left border! But thanks dude for your help.

I hear ya man I can't fathom that I actually settled for running the game with windows borders but it's the lesser of two evils sadly. The stuttering was borderline torture. From what I've heard things like shiftwindow should remedy the bars while still avoiding the stuttering so I say go for it.

I tried the windowed mode Corky, it still stuttering for me. :(

Running a 670

Wow Im impresed to see all the negative feedback for this game, my experience was very nice and smooth, 60fps everything maxed, forcing 4x SSAA thru CCC, no crashes, no stuttering, no problemo, all with the HD texture pack.

Does this game just run worse on Nvidia cards? Upgraded to 660ti from a HD6870 not too long and there are some INSANE frame rate drops on the 660ti that didn't happen on my HD6870. I haven't changed any of the video settings (everything on high except for AA which is set to normal.)

I got a decent performance with my Dual Core @ 2.7GHZ, 4 GB DDR3 RAM and a 5670 in Medium settings from the demo, how much does it change from the full game?

Also, I had a bit of input lag, not too bad but it threw me off at the beginning of the demo.

The demo doesn't contain any driving, right? You'll most likely encounter some rough frame rate dips once you hit the city at large, on wheels and whatnot.

As for the stuttering, it's a shame that they haven't fixed it yet. Hopefully the do by the time the Halloween dlc pack hits.

This game was the final straw for me with regards to most new games and having 60fps stuttering issues. I scoured the internet and finally came across this program written by a Steam forums user. Eliminated all stuttering in Sleeping Dogs and gave full screen coverage after setting -2, -2 in the window properties of the program itself.

It also did wonders for Battlefield 3....For 2 minutes until I picked up a Punkbuster ban. :p

To add to the discussion of newer games with stuttering, it seems like EVERY game I have played in the last couple years has had this issue to some degree. I was starting to think it was just me and having an unlucky setup with PC components.

Was using this program earlier, still doesn't work well (here at least). The right and bottom of the screen get cropped a bit even if you set the actual resolution through it

I actually did notice that, only since Fraps had its bottom numbers cut off. In gameplay nothing important was chopped and the game looked crisp sitting 5 feet from my television and gave me no stutter, so I ignored that fact.

Wonder if there is a way to fix that?

Just got the game. Some laptop benchmarks.

So....playable (for me anyways). I guess I could turn down the AA and blur and see if that helps.

Didn't help with the daylight stuttering for me and you loose picture information. Corners are cut. :(

I've been thinking about opening a thread where we could discuss this whole stutter debacle in nearly all recent PC games, but never got around doing it. If someone else wants to, feel free. Also post a link in this thread :)

I second that notion.

I have been experimenting with different settings in this game and think I have settled on a good combo of raising everything to maximum including SSAA and locking the game at 30fps with Vsync. After about an hours time I have gotten used to the slower movement but am getting a weird effect where the image kind of "shakes" or something. It's kind of like tearing, but not, like objects are wobbling when I turn the camera fast. Anyone else experience this?

I'm pretty damn impressed at how well this game is optimized. I haven't gotten too much into the game yet though, so I haven't had a chance to observe any of the microstuttering that a lot of you seem to be encountering. Hopefully it doesn't pop up or bother me too much.

I hear you. I think a lot of people just dont see it maybe but something like Darksiders 2 I saw it the second I moved the camera and had to do the D3Doverrider malarkey.

At the moment I don't want to play Sleeping Dogs until they fix the windowed mode resolution?

It seems to be most of the people complaining about stuttering are nvidia users, i had to use borderless full screen and d3doverrider, now its smooth nearly all the time, i noticed when driving fast though there is a shudder in the camera that is trying to represent speed, but it feels janky.
