Small graphical issues you want remedied next-gen

Is screen tearing a relatively new thing? I don't remember anything about it from last gen consoles. What is it about these consoles on why it happens in games?

Is it a simple case of pushing the consoles too hard or something?

I remember screen tearing as far back as the original PlayStation.

I want to say 'framerate', but I've been expecting next-gen to fix that ever since the N64 era, so I don't really have much hope.

Poorly optimized PC ports (Skyrim, Far Cry 3, Dark Souls)
- STOP it

Sub HD console games
- STOP it

Unacceptable loading times (consoles)
- STOP it

Screen tearing
- STOP it

-Unexplained frame rate issues
- STOP it

Every console game this gen look so blurry! Its weird! Hope this gets fixed soon!

Its the number one reason why Im not looking forward to GTAV's visuals. IV was a blurry and BLOOMY mess. Like someone smeared vaseline on the screen.

Go play God of War 3. So clean it will burn your eyes with awesomeness.

I don't think you guys realize what "small graphical issues" means. Resolution and animation are not small graphical issues.

- Fix screen tearing.
- Fix micro-stuttering, particularly in PC games
- (Console) More performance than graphical - but have every game be at least at 30 FPS locked. If targeting 60 FPS, either have that v-sync locked, or implement proper triple-buffering. Keep input lag as minimal as possible. (PC) Implement proper triple-buffering so that I don't need to use D3DOverrider.
- Fix shadow dithering. Even some of the best looking games, such as The Witcher 2, suffer from this.
- Get rid of bloom
- Depth-of-field can stay, but please implement it CORRECTLY. The effect is nice when done right. Most devs overdo it.
- Minimum 720p for every console game. 1080p strongly preferred.
- Some form of SSAO would be nice in next-gen console games
- MSAA or better. But it may be too much to ask for MSAA and 1080p in next-gen consoles, while maintaining acceptable performance.
- Fix clipping
- Make hair look like actual hair.
- Make hair animate like real hair.
- Improve animation in general. We still have "uncanny valley" issues with facial animation. Almost every character in almost every game still looks too stiff and wooden when walking or running or making gestures with his/her hands and arms.
- Implement good anistropic filtering

Flickering shadows on models...

Most of the issues in this thread won't be "fixed" next-gen. They're that way for a reason - framerate.

I'd love it if next-gen would be the gen where shadows finally look right in games.

I mean do we really still have to see shit like this in games.

Shimmers like hell too when you walk around and it's just everywhere.

jaggies won't go away IMO...most AA methods hurt performance a lot. I just bought a $300 GPU and it has trouble with anything more than 2x MSAA for deferred rendered games. I guess the devs could lock the FPS at 30....

resolution allready helps (1080P), but AA is a must imo. Just reward a fucking Nobelprize for whoever finds a lasting fix..

Every game needs to be 720P native, minimum.
Every game needs to be LOCKED at 60FPS.
Every game needs to have whatever aliasing technique God of War 3 used, minimum.
Shimmering needs to die.
Dithering needs to be dragged out into the street and shot.
Low poly plants, grass, trees and various other foliage need to go away.
Clipping is unacceptable in this day and age.
3D needs to stop.

This would all make me very happy.

Every game needs to be 720P native, minimum.
Why? What's so different between 720p and 1024x600 on a 1080p display? Both are blurry jaggy mess of a visuals. 1080p native is the only way to get things done in a proper way. Anything less than this is less than what I had on my PC since 2005.

Texture pop-in on main characters/environment. It's not nearly as bad as it was a few years ago, but every once and awhile it happens. There were times playing ACIII when textures failed to load or took a long time to load on large portions of the game world.

My 2 most wanted things are probably these:

1080p standard
16 anisotropic filtering

Take pretty much any 3d game on your pc, and switch between 720p/1080p and 16 anisotropic filtering/no anisotropic filtering. Difference is fucking insane.

Pop in. Playing DCUO or GTA4... these current gen systems just cant handle the open world games when you travel at fast speeds.

Hideous skyboxes.

Battlefield 3, even maxed out, looks like shit in some maps. The jet mission in singleplayer, my fucking god, why am I staring at LOW-RES CLOUDS?

Also, Mass Effect 3, at least on consoles, had disgusting skyboxes.

Anisotropic filtering.

So many current gen games would look incredible if they had AF.

It has to be mandatory in every game next gen. Without it, the textures tend to look like shit no matter how good they are.
