So much jp smut/fanservice games are localized in recent years, what changed?

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for more 'expressive' games, especially if they are also solid games. But yeah it still baffles me that senran kagura burst got localized, and got a T rating, same with conception 2 and recent compile heart garbage and some scenes in demon gaze... surprised they didn't censor.

We have xseed/atlus and other localization folks on gaf right? Was it just everyone was waiting for someone to be the 'first guy'? Or did some things change at nintendo/sony/ESRB that allows more... interesting games to be published in the states?

If we can get games like 50 Cent Bulletproof, we can get those weird, niche games too.

There's a market, Neptunia fans are pretty dedicated as an example.

I'm glad they aren't getting censored, the idea that sex is somehow worse than violence is stupid and has always annoyed me.

Well, I am sure it relates to the fact that simply more and more and more of these games are available to Japanese devs taking a sharp turn from developing huge, sprawling AAA games to games with more modesty in scope--though not in their characters themselves :P

Which I'm all for, obviously, though most of those games are more bishounen as opposed to beefcake/bara.

I want some MEAT.

Most of those types can, AFAIK, be found in the manga/doujin circles... I am not aware of the beefcake/bara types in games, where usually bishounens take the majority, if not all, of the cake.

When the anime industry collapsed and went to shit in 2008 the only crap that would sell was fanservice. So a lot of people are still working on that even after the stabilization. Bottom line is that it sells.

The non-smut factories either died or make phone games now. This is all that's left. Consolidation within Japanese publishers didn't help either.

Once the industry crashes, all that will be left are Senran Kagura and Hyperdimension Neptunia.

I love getting all this niche over here. Now if only Yakuza got localized too....

Me as well, I don't care if it's bad like Conception II, at least it got localized. Deception IV got localized and I thought that was never gonna come over.

The beefcake macho anime that occurred in the mid-80s are long over, dude. Yeah, it's so sad that beefcake characters are endangered species in recent JRPGs.

NIS American and XSEED are still testing the waters in a lot of ways in terms of localization projects. Sengan Kagura and Hyperdimension Neptunia's success may be a home run now, but before they probably looked like huge risks. You don't want to put out games that may get you shunned by the moral voice of the industry and/or turn out to be failures. Considering both teams still dance the association of perv-games in their marketing, you can tell they're still worried on the issue.

The profits are there though, and we're almost certain to see more games of this like localized in the years to come.

I'd rather take these fanservice jRPGs any time of the day than shootbang dudebro Call of Field 2: Return of the Mtn Deu and Durrotos.

Why do they have to be pitted against each other, they're clearly meant to sell to two different audiences.
Although I would think one is better off in the long run.
The jrpgs.

DD might also have something to do with it. It allows localizers to avoid the risk of over or underestimating demand by doing an initial small print + digital release.

Amazon, too, given publishers no longer have to worry about ensuring B&M stores are stocked.

i remember seeing a kid concentrating intently inside of a gamestop on whether he should buy mugen souls or the last of us

I wish Rance Quest would get translated -_-.

I mean one of the deepest games I played is a "hentai" game in Sengoku Rance but dam the combat systems and stuff in that game is super deep.

These games sell well in Japan and they are realizing that non japanese people want to play them as well and will pay for them I hope this trend continues.

Neither of these types of games ever will or ever have had to fight for consumer interest. They're as separate of markets as you can possibly get.

Waifu isn't even used just for anime anymore anyway

Also, dat logo is amazing

Video games market in Japan shrinking, monotonous waifu industry panics and expands into international areas in a hope of hitting eureka. If no success found, waifu industry recoils taking vulnerable developers to the graveyard.
