Sonic 3 is the best 2D sonic game, right?

There are similarities between the OST and MJ's work. What's crazy is that the OST resembles some of his future work as well. So it's very likely that he did the OST.

I think SEGA confirmed it after he died. They mentioned something about the various partnerships he had with them.

Might be wrong, though.

sonic 1 megadrive and sonic 1 game gear are my favs

by 3 it all gets too complex and frustrating for me

How are the Game Gear Sonics? Are they based on the Master System versions. I think they're on the VC, so I might pick them up. I'm doing a Sonic run of late.

-One of the best soundtracks of all the games. And that's not saying something as the other classic Sonic games aren't slouches in the OST department as well. I heard Michael Jackson may have wrote some tunes, but I have no idea how accurate that is. Also dat Hydocity Act 2 theme is glorious.

Despite some contradictory statements made by former Sega of America employees of that time, it was pretty much confirmed by one of Michael's collaborators of that period that he did write some of Sonic 3's songs.

There's even a clip of rapper Heavy D saying "Jam!" in Carnival Night Zone.

Sonic CD for me, there is something really cool when you manage to get the good future in all the stages, and the music is really cool

Isn't hard at all, but is funny to find all thos robot machines, and the music is superb too

They're OK, but stay away from the GG version of Sonic 2. The small screen on the GG made some of the bosses and levels a nightmare compared to the MS version.

don't know if they're unique or not. i've only played the first but it's quite simple and has a decent recreation of the megadrive physics (still has better platforming than modern sonic)

as someone who isn't very good at the series i enjoy it a lot, but it might not hold up for others as anything more than an interesting relic.

Close. The correct answer is "Sonic 3 & Knuckles".

True. Sonic 3 on its own is, on the other hand, probably the worst of the Mega Drive Sonic games. For me at least. I still remember what a let down that game was back in the day.

This guy gets it. Most levels, best graphics, best music, plus Hyper forms for all three characters! Super Chaos Emeralds are so satisfying to get.

Let§s not forget the Doomsday level. Plus the bonus special stages (when you put Sonic 1 in S&K), I played those on and on until I became really good. I even had a table with the passwords.

Had a question, which are the differences between playing sonic 3, Knuckles, and both together?

I had only played S & K when they are united, but never played the other 2 as standalone games

Other than Marble Zone, I always did like Sonic 3. Both it and S&K have the best level design out of the classic series imo. The one advantage of Sonic 3 over the lock on is that in S&K;
you lose the ability to go Super Sonic once you reach Mushroom Hill and can't transform until you beat all the blue sphere games

Sonic 3 has multiplayer, a different invincibility music, a save mechanic, and the "first" 6 zones. You can play as Sonic and/or Tails.

Sonic and Knuckles has the "last" 7 zones. You can play as Sonic or Knuckles.

I also loved that Sonic 3 had a nice tight and short campaign. I know the reason for that it's that it was split in two, but I just loved replaying. Sonic and Tails, Sonic Only, Tails Only. I think I maxed out the save slots with replays.

No, you can just avoid all the rings and skip the super emerald stuff.

you can actually avoid this by just never going into a special stage again

I never really liked Sonic 3. It was pretty disappointing to me. Only 6 zones, and half of them are kind of lame.

Angel Island - Superb
Hydrocity - Water? Bleh
Marble Garden - Boring
Carnival Night - Already had my fill of this with Casino Night
Ice Cap - Rad
Launch Base - Pretty good

And that's the game! Pretty weak at the end of the day. I liked Sonic and Knuckles much more.

You can use Knuckles in the Sonic 3 levels, the levels are a bit different and the game is harder when playing as Knuckles.

The people who think that Sonic 2 is better than Sonic 3 & Knuckles must be the same sort of people who like Dr. Mario more than Tetris and Super Smash Bros. Brawl more than Melee. But hey, it's OK to like inferior things.

Sonic 1 is the best, the game has a good mix of controllable speed and platforming. Sonic 2 is pretty good too but it's the start of the downfall into faster speeds and roller coaster levels instead of good gameplay.

Sonic 3 is the ugliest one. It threw away much of the beautiful geometric landscape and art style. The levels also go on forever.

Sonic 2 is the best of them followed by 1.

S3&K is the best. Massive, glorious game with one of the more memorable final battle.

I recently played this due to the rerelease. Not impressed. It's probably me least fav.

Yeah, I think Sonic CD is a mess. Level design is haphazard at best, time travel gimmick is under-utilized, boss battles are straight up bizarre, and for a game that came out after Sonic 2, it looks worse. Oh, and the music sucks.

I honestly don't get the Sonic CD love.

Much better when you stack the Sega without duplicate devices. Just shows the absurtity of all the crazy stuff you could hook to that thing.

EDIT: Derp, there's one duplicate Sonic and Knuckles in there.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles has both Carnival Night Zone and Sandopolis Zone, both of which are rather annoying long levels. Sonic 2 might've had the annoying Metropolis Zone, but at least it was right near the end of the game.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the best Sonic gaming experience one can have, in my view.

Hands down. As a kid I felt that all gaming had led to that one moment when you could hook them up together. Also not to mention if you tried to insert the first Sonic and you'd get the bonus stages to play through... never did find out if it was an endless mode or not though.

Every time I replay S3&K on whatever compilation disc or digital rerelease, I always have fun as much as I did when I played it being a kid. Not to mention it a good amount of the music was great (Hydrocity Zone Act 2 yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees. Plus it goes great with the Fresh Prince theme.)

Sonic 2 is still great, especially since that's how I got into the series, but I feel S3&K wins just slightly. Probably due to the fact you had 3 different characters that played differently, one allowing for alt paths and even boss battles, and the ability to save.

Well, considering I haven't played the Sonic 3 & Knuckles combo yet, I will say Sonic CD until I can see if Sonic 3/Sonic 3 & Knuckles is better. The worst game of them all is Sonic 4 Part 1, though.

I've been messing around with the classic Sonic series, replaying them all of late. I'm on Sonic 3. Not Sonic 3 and Knuckles, just vanilla Sonic 3. I'll do Sonic 3 and Knuckles after beating Sonic 3.

But Sonic 3 is just amazing:

-One of the best soundtracks of all the games. And that's not saying something as the other classic Sonic games aren't slouches in the OST department as well. I heard Michael Jackson may have wrote some tunes, but I have no idea how accurate that is. Also dat Hydocity Act 2 theme is glorious.

-Favorite Chaos emerald game. I love the sphere game and it kills all the other Chaos emerald games.

-Huge levels. This is where Sonic 3 stands out. The levels are massive and there seems to be so many nooks and cranny and the game design rewards looking for stuff as well.

I know many people love Sonic 2 and I played Sonic 2 when it was released and many times since. It's still great, but too many iffy zones for me to give it the title.

Sonic 3 and Knuckles is the completely game, and is a much more satisfying game. The knuckles sections of the sonic 3 levels were fun to explore and unlocking
Hyper sonic, Hyper knuckles, and super tails
made it so much more fun. So yeah, Sonic 3 and Knuckles is the best 2D sonic IMHO.

Frankly, I think Sonic's sprite in S3&K looks like rancid poop compared to the Sonic 1/2/CD sprite.

That extra shading and rounder, more appealing look. Ugh. Sonic should have stayed in 1992.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles has both Carnival Night Zone and Sandopolis Zone, both of which are rather annoying long levels. Sonic 2 might've had the annoying Metropolis Zone, but at least it was right near the end of the game.

So....large, open areas with plenty of hidden nooks and crannies is a bad thing?

Yeah but S&K has Sandopolis which is infinitely worse than any of those.

Hands down. As a kid I felt that all gaming had led to that one moment when you could hook them up together. Also not to mention if you tried to insert the first Sonic and you'd get the bonus stages to play through... never did find out if it was an endless mode or not though.
It is a fixed number, but there's no way anyone would actually get through them. 134,217,728 to be exact.

Personal favorite game ever. There. I said it.

That's not to say I think it's objectively the best game ever. Just my personal favorite.

Nothing has or probably will ever have that power of nostalgia on me more than playing the first level in Sonic 1. Not even close.

As for the best Sonic game? Sonic 3 & Knuckles

Sonic 4 Ep. 1 is garbage, but there are definitely far worse Sonic games out there. Like Sonic Blast or Sonic Labyrinth.

I still have my cardboard box of this game from when I was a kid, and it's one of the few boxes that is absolutely trashed because I played it so goddamn much.

Batteries the CRISIS!
I loved CD as a kid, but looking back at it now, wow, the level design is just...wow. See, the brilliance of the level designs of 2 and 3&K IMO was that they were very strongly vertical as well as horizontal, but despite their freedom and despite the repeated tiles they were incredibly smart in laying out actual geometry so that every level had distinct "landmarks" that you could learn quickly and build up an internal representation of the level with. Sonic CD's level design is a mess in contrast, its just so easy to get lost because everywhere looks like everywhere else.

This. This is my problem with it! I didn't play Sonic CD until Sonic Gems Collection about a decade ago, and I didn't like it much. What you've said is a great way of explaining a big reason why I didn't like that game. There are no landmarks. It feels like I'm just pressing on until I reach the end marker. In all the Genesis Sonics, it felt like I was actually exploring places.
