Sonic Generations Gameplay Walkthrough (Classic And Modern) [Non-Playable Cream]

I don't understand why anybody would want to continue with more games that feature both characters. Wouldn't people rather two streams of Sonic games?

One that follows classic Sonic and the other that follows Modern Sonic and all his boost spamming, on-rails gameplay?

Yes, if I wasn't being clear on that point I hope they can co-exist in the marketplace as separate experiences.

I don't think either is done particular justice bogged down by the other beyond this special circumstance as a celebration of both. That said, it'll be an interesting display of Trojan horsing Colours gameplay into the embrace of the particular aforementioned protesters who never actually gave it a fair shake in the first place.

I don't see why we wouldn't see something like that now. The size of the classic Sonic fanbase has to be enough to at least make a downloadable title viable. They can just keep modern Sonic for retail titles. I think that's how it'll be split since Sonic 4 was intended to be for classic Sonic fans.

We discussed that very question back on this page.

It would be nice, but from a financial standpoint it seems unlikely that Sega will do that, at least not at this standard of quality. One of their big problems with rendering Sonic games in 3D has always been that creating assets is a lot more expensive, which gets to be a problem in this modern day and age of saving when everyone can blow through your game in three hours or less. Particularly when reviewers tend to slam short games for offering too little for the price. So Sega's convinced that they have to pad out the major games somehow, and we've been seeing the results of that belief ever since SA1. Colors is the closest we've come to a pure 3D title and it's limited to six zones, reuses a ton of geometry and generic level objects, has a lot of slow-paced 2D sections, and is a Wii game. It'll be interesting to see if they attempt a similar design with a larger budget going forward.

A big budget full 2D game might also be a possibility, depending on the success and feedback they get from this game. If Sega's proven anything about their handling of the franchise over the years, it's that they go where the money and demand is.

PC version?

Finally a modern 3D Sonic that isn't stuck with an unstable 30fps. A high framerate is integral to making the gameplay in a game like this work properly and it was a huge missing ingredient from Unleashed.

No more blurry half HD resolution either, so day 1 it is.

Wait there's actual news in here?

And splitting we are.

...I seem to have grabbed some slightly off topic stuff, but I don't feel like weeding out 109 posts right now. :p

Man, as cool as this looks, I'm just so...done with Sonic that it feels like I'm forcing myself to be interested in this game

Classic Sonic looks okay, but he's obviously still moving faster than he did in the originals. And to compensate, the stages have obviously been "stretched" a bit. So they still haven't nailed the classic style, even if they have fixed many of the physics.

Modern Sonic looks exactly like Unleashed and not as much like Colors. Colors felt like it was trying to split the difference between Unleashed and Classic to some extent. In Colors, you didn't boost near as much, there was a lot more 2D, and scoring high meant you had to pay attention to routes with a lot of rings and extra scoring opportunities. But Unleashed was about performing the perfect run and doing it as fast as you can.

The guy talking about the game sure knew what he was talking about. (what the essence of sonic and sonic 2 was).
I'm really glad the lock on jumps are gone too, fuck that.

Now it's just down to how good the levels are.

Day one, and I never say that.

Man now why 'd you have to go and kill my buzz.
I hope they fix that. :\

Exciting videos. I think they got the fundamentals of each version of Sonic down this time. I'm very pleased.

I hope this game brings some kind of spinoff revival of classic sonic games even if they are downloadable versions only. This game needs to sell well.

Technically we've already had full runs of Classic and Modern Sonic, the only real difference in these videos were different paths taken, and the uncurling fix. Not really significant news.

Neither video got me excited, haven't played a current gen sonic game since the secret rings which was.......bearable. So take this perspective from someone not so knowledgeable about any of the recent sonic games.

For this, the "modern" gameplay is way too fast. All they did was take the adventure games and make it even more faster. It is just a bunch of boosting through everything and then slowly crossing a couple platforms and then proceeding to boost a bunch and go off ramps. Looks incredible i suppose but incredibly uninteresting gameplay wise.

The "Classic" game looks like is should just be an XBLA/PSN game not a $60 retail. I don't remember the ol sonic game being this fast though, but it is I suppose.

GAF excited for both a Sonic game and the comic? What strange times we all live in.

The current writer's run began with #160. Don't bother with anything before that.

That looked fantastic!

For what it's worth, I finished Sonic4 and did not finish Sonic Colors ...guess that says which gameplay model I prefer in the end ....even with da shite physics =P

That looks really really fun actually, but some small part of me is still irked that you can't play both level variations with either version of Sonic, or that there isn't just one level variation.

Mostly I just finally want the spin-dash in 3D. (properly)
Oh well.

Looks exciting.

I hope there's the Chao farm.

Classic part is looking great, now just trash the modern part and give us a game with lots of classic new levels please.

First Sonic game i'll buy in a long time.
I would just blur the background a little to make the front plan stand more.

Looks pretty fun.

I laughed at the "And here's part of the level deign philosophy for modern Sonic..." *Sonic falls into a bottomless pit* Perfect unintentional comedic timing, too.

I'm keeping an eye on this, I'd like to see at least one or two more zones from the game.

Modern one looks like Colors, which means it looks like a boss.
Ironic because Colors had crap bossfights. Was it just me or did the 1st boss die in just 2 hits?

For the better. The platforming was waaaay too loose and floaty in Colours. I didn't enjoy those elements at all. Unleashed day-time is still my favourite 3D interpretation of Sonic. Hopefully Generations improves on it.

When will you people learn that uncurling out of a roll doesn't mean shit if he still can't roll properly in the first place?

He slows down every time he enters a roll and infact loses momentum - which is just all shades of wrong.

After a little adjustment, there's nothing inherently wrong with the platforming in Colours. It controls just fine, not perfect but fine.

If you're talking in terms of level design, the 2D sections never really extend themselves but the overall consistency of quality is far better than the boost fest that is Unleashed.

And I liked Unleashed.

The overall experience in Colours though is so superior it's not funny. The presentation and general attitude of the game is outstanding and the best Sonic has seen since his 16-bit days.

It's honestly just not engaging to me. Found it dull and their frequency grating. Unless those 2D platforming mechanics are pitch perfect, I don't want them for anything other than a quick interlude to break up the level pacing a little bit, which was not the case with Colours.

But man, I have to say this -

- says little. It's like saying "out of all the Sonic games that don't do the franchise any justice, Colours is the one that's alright".

I personally find Chemical Plant zone 'good'. I've never been sure where all the undying praise for it comes from.
For me it's partly the awesome music, partly the robot spiders being cool and partly the purple water stuff looking like mouthwash I used to used when I was a kid and playing Sonic 2 a lot (It was like Sonic was drowning in the factory that made my mouthwash!).

It's really just the music. As a level its pretty boring to play. I'm personally hoping that if any other Sonic 2 level makes it in, that we get Mystic Cave.

Music. The underwater platforming is more tedious than fun, but the level still has its moments. The Robotnik fight is decent as well.

Modern Sonic grinding on the rails in the cave.

"Shows important part of the teams design philosophy"

Falls off the rails.

"Um..."

I laughed. Good joke my friend.

Rails were never good to begin with. Stop adding them in Sonic games please.

The first video is pretty inoffensive to me, probably the most inoffensive thing SEGA has done with Sonic in quite some time.

The second video is the same reaction-based, boost-spamming, hold right to win, homing-attack enforced, unimaginative, linear, tiresome nonsense that stands proudly alongside SEGA's never ending collection of Sonic-branded excretions.

If they'd have made the entire game using the "classic" model then I'd be interested. The fact that they have included the dire mechanics of their recent pitiable endeavours means that, at least for me, the game at best will be half-terrible.

And I'm not inclined to reward that.

For those that enjoy the modern Sonic gameplay model, hope you enjoy it.

Typical shit that always happens in sonic games because they are never polished how they should be. Speaking of which, is this game 60fps or 30fps? I'm not going to even bother trying to play another platformer in this style if it isn't high enough.

This. Chemical Plant has awesome music, and the Neo-Industrial setting is COOL, but the level itself is meh, especially when you have to jump out of the Mega-Mac using those rotating groups of blocks.

My vote for classic levels would have to be Lava Reef, Flying Battery, Mushroom Hill Casino Night and Aquatic Ruin. Some sort of Ice and Snow level is bound to be there too.

Did anyone else facepalm then have a seizure from Sonic 06 flashbacks when he went plunging into the water in the modern sonic playthrough?

lmfao. good luck sega, you'll need it.

edit: I see many of you had the same reaction, glad I wasn't the only one getting a good laugh out of it. They'll never learn. Can we bury him now?

Yes we would all love if they stuck to the classic design and took the resource they used for the modern sonic portions and refined classic sonic even further. This is Sega, intelligence is not their strong suite.
