Dreams Come True did the music for Sonic 1 and Sonic 2.

Michael Jackson (or, at least, his cronies) had some significant input in Sonic 3.

That begs the question...what popular, modern pop artist will be doing Sonic 4?
See, my first thought was......

Playing the old sonic games makes me wonder if games should change todays music to sound effects ratio. You know how in the old platformers how the music was all up in your face throughout every stage? I think that adds so much to the experience.

The orchestral music in Galaxy really accomplished this well without being annoying.

It's been a while since I've seen so much simultaneous joy and complaining xD

It looks promising, but the graphics really disappoint me. They don't look as clean as they could be. Look like they got stuck between an ugly sprite phase, and trying to 3D model. Sonic seems to be a 3D model, yet he's running in a mostly 2D background, with an even further-pixelated backdrop? Kind of weird.

Can't wait to see an actual trailer for this, though.

I still can't get over how awkward that trailer is. This specific point is just one of a ton of moments where I went "what are they doing?" I mean, I have no particular interest in Sonic beyond nostalgia and I don't want to say I have any experience making trailers but there's just so much wrong that I wonder if one of their still artists said "Hey I've got vegas and particle illusion, let me make it!" with no really trained sense of motion.

I mean, even the speed lines are going the wrong way.

They paid a smaller company to make the trailer I think. Same with the first speed returns trailer.

So I've been replaying the sonic series on my Droid lately.
What are your guy's favorite sonic stages ever?

I have to say Oil Ocean from Sonic 2.
Mostly because I remember the first day I got to it. I had always gotten to the end of mystic cave only to get raped by the boss until I found that one point where the icicles never fall on you. It also has awesome music! AND that shitty tiget led electronic game had oil ocean as it's background.
Some of my favorite stages include Final Rush due to it's AWEOME amount of grinding, Palmtree Panic Act 1 because of it being such an awesome intro stage, Skyscraper Scamper Act 1 Night due to its awesome music and swinging/platforming level design, Carnival Night due it being an awesome casino-type level with great fluidity to boot, Neo Green Hill Zone Act 1 for it's classic sonic charm combined with an edgier feel, Sky Canyon Boss for having Knuckles being gullible for the 40th time, and finally, Angel Island in its entirety for giving us, hand down, the best "epic" intro stage in the entire series' history.

So much good stuff, littered all about. I love it. :D

Alright, made a quick example of how Sonic Advance 1 played and what we might expect from Sonic 4.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYb2BgWXsLY

Dont mind me running into stuff :lol just made it for example purposes.

Seems really sad that the best I can hope for from Sonic 4 is something that plays remotely like Sonic Advance 1. Not Advance 2 and 3 though... ugh.

Either way, while I really liked the first advance game, it still seems really lacking looking back. Enemy placement was pretty bad, and the levels never feel as good as anything from the Genesis era. Still likely the best example of 2D Sonic in forever though, as it's not all automated boost button bullshit rail grind rail grind boost button rail grind.

Good place to ask as any, any good OC Remix recommendations for Sonic? Please exclude anything with lyrics (cause, yeah, ugh)

I only have the following:

Sonic 1:
- Particle Brain
- Marble Dash
- Lightning Star
- Cryptic Marble

Sonic 2:
- Welcome to the Metropolis
- Next my Generation

Sonick & Knuckles:
- rAAw Battery

My god, production value of this make it looks like Final Fantasy XIII compared to the 4....
It seems clear that Sonic 4 has zero budget, and that's just clearly visible... But it will hopfully be a good game.

It's just sad that a 2D game like that means zero money nowadays.. Some work put into it could make it profitable, even for kids and casuals.

Look no further: Taikal Drum'n'Ragga.

In my opinion, it's the best Sonic remix on the whole site. If you hate this, you have no soul.

EDIT: Come to think of it, all the "princess" songs in the Sonic series are pretty freaking awesome, minus Elise's main one of course. :lol

eeeeh, thats an alright song. Its well made but the beat doesnt go anywhere, it kinda leaves you hanging, but not bad.

Cryptic Marble is much better though.

If Sonic 4 can exist, I'm curious as to why we haven't gotten a proper Sonic Adventure 3 :(

At least I can dream. Maybe I'll get that one day, along with a Tomba! 3

I was listening to some Sonic 2 OC remixes a few minutes ago, which made me want to listen to the originals. Man, Sega was always so awesome in the music department.

do you really want the sega we know today, to give you a sonic adventure 3....really....

Sonic 2006 was Sonic Adventure 3. It was elements from the previous Sonic Adventure games smeared with poo and left to rot in a steamy, hot out house for a week.

I REFUSE to classify Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) as Sonic Adventure 3. I simply won't.

Well, when you compare the progression of quality from Sonic Adventure 1 to Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic 2K6 fits in perfectly as Sonic Adventure 3.

Hello everyone!

Today we have some good news to bring you guys in regard to Sonic's running animation in Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode I! Specifically, we wanted to cover a topic that many of you have asked about after seeing the trailer.

Q: Is the running animation in the trailer what Sonic's fastest running animation will look like in Sonic the Hedgehog 4? It looks kind of slow, don't you think?

A: Actually, it is not his fastest speed! There is a faster animation for Sonic's running that was not shown in the trailer, and is more akin to what you might be familiar seeing from Sonic 3 & Knuckles or Sonic CD.

So there you have it! We'll get to show you guys firsthand what that running animation looks like in the future - but until then, rest assured that there's a lot more to the game than what you saw in the trailer: running animations included.

Have a great weekend,
Ruby

I was thinking maybe Akon. Not only did he work on the 2006 remix of Sweet Dreams, but he's worked with the guy who produced a bunch of Sonic 3 music on more than one occasion.

Can't really think of any other modern pop-stars
besides gaga
that could do the job any better.

Just like how I refuse to classify Shadow The Hedgehog as Sonic Adventure 3, even though it pretty much is.

To be fair, Shadow is pretty much Sonic Adventure 2 Episode 2. Think about it.

I know I'll get shit for this, but Shadow the Hedgehog was actually really fun in terms of gameplay.

In terms of story, music, dialogue, and theme it was utter shit.

That being said, I would actually like Shadow if he had died and stayed dead at the end of Sonic Adventure 2.

Shadow the Hedgehog isn't SA3

Different title character, weird branching storyline system, only one playable character...

Sonic 2006, on the other hand, intentionally throws all the game mechanics of SA1, SA2, and Sonic Heroes in to a blender set to "liquefy" and serves up a nice frosty glass of disappointment. Even if you don't want to believe it, it IS Sonic Adventure 3 and that is the game's entire problem. It inherited every single bad idea from those games and was further spoiled by a rushed development cycle.

Watching that video of SSE Sonic run makes me want a Nintendo made Sonic game.

This is the only way I would ever get excited about a Sonic game again.

I know this is going to sound like a total plug, but whatever.

I discovered this guy on YouTube about a week ago. He writes original music inspired by the New Jack/Funk feel of Sonic 3.

Here's a sample of his album: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8wUenvca-o&feature=related

It's the first digital album I've ever bought. My favorite is probably "Block Party Zone" (sample at 1:38 of that video).

I would love this kind of sound for Sonic 4. This is the sound of 2D Sonic to me.

Eh. Some of it approaches the style of Chaotix and CD JP past tunes, but none of it feels like any of the mainline music.

Well excuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me but I find Sonic Adventure 2 (Battle, specifically) to be a total and complete step of progress from Sonic Adventure 1. It did everything from variety of gameplay to story-telling in a Sonic game right, in my opinion.

It also ditched the shitty 'world select' for stage-by-stage gameplay. Which is probably the best progression from SA1.

Plus, playing as Eggman was pretty badass.
