The terrible art style shown to this point and with the EPISODIC content.....really? They have knocked me back down to the bottom of any hype pole I was dancing on.

I had a blast playing Sonic 2's splitscreen mode when I was a kid. It would be great if multiplayer races of that sort made a comeback. I'm not a fan of the teleporter item box though; it was super annoying. That reminds me: Sonic 3's splitscreen race mode was terrible.gamergirly said:I loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed Sonic 2's versus mode. Kilrogg said:Agreed. Also, the whole "Episode" thing makes me think that the emphasis will be put on the storyline, which I think we can all agree here is completely unnecessary for freakin' Sonic 4. I'm not saying they'll definitely do that, but that's what comes to my mind when I read "episode". When I think about episodic content, I think Telltale Games, in which, sure enough, the story matters. Not in Sonic.

Sonic 1 and 2 were fantastic, but they were too fast to be Sonic 4.brain_stew said:Sonic Advance is a legitimate contender for the title "Sonic 4", the others? Not so much. They play completely differently.

S3&K was the first true true video game that my brother and I ever played. That thing is on a f**king pedestal for me, it was such an incredible experience. If this game isn't 10x better, I wil disavow Sonic from my life >(-PXG- said:The old games have a distinct and recognizable identity. We all grew up on these games, we know how they are supposed to play, feel and sound. In order for this game to truly be Sonic 4, Sega needs to capture these elements. Only those who've played the originals, especially at an early age, or those who have a keen attention to detail, will notice these things.

Aside from the fact that they directly mention nobody knows anything about him in The Dark Knight, the Joker is DEAD at the end of Burton's movie.
I know this was off-topic, but FUCK, I had to jump on this moronic statement.

What's with all the conclusion jumping? The game is full of rebuilt badniks from the previous games. Robotnik is revisiting and improving his best badniks.Firestorm said:I took it to mean he's rebuilding the Death Egg. Makes sense as that's what ties the Genesis games together.
Willy105 said:When you play the game, it's not really annoying. It's actually relaxing, because the button presses mixed with the sound effect creates a cathartic effect when creating the trick making it feel good. When you mess up the trick and you hear nothing, it feels bad and you feel like you missed something.
JaseC said:It's a bit early to be absolutely sure of this. Just because Balough mentioned S3 and S&K being two halves of the Sonic 3 whole despite both being two fully-fledged entries doesn't mean Sega will take a similar path with Sonic 4's episodic structure.
It can't be a throwback if it has homing attack because that will completely change the level structure and enemy placement (for worse).Monroeski said:The best part of the Sonic Cycle is that it's sometimes a self fulfilling prophecy. Here they announce a new 2D platformer on consoles with an episodic structure that's a throwback to what many people think its the best in the entire series, and here people are about to start setting mattresses on fire because of homing attacks and freaking EYE COLOR. Even when the good 2D platformers came out for DS, they weren't good enough for many because OH NOEZ THEY'RE NOT GOOD ENOUGH BECAUSE THEY'RE PORTABLE INSTEAD OF ON CONSOLES!
Never change, GAF, never change. :lol

The Rush games are not good at all and not because they're handheld games.

ckohler said:To this day, I still have no idea why SEGA continues to treat Sonic CD like it never happened. It was a pinnacle of gaming perfection. As much as I love the cartridge games, Sonic CD was in a whole other category when it came to presentation, gameplay, music and level design.
One of the best gaming experiences I have ever had was beating Sonic CD for the first time. Suddenly, this awesome full motion animated ending started to play. I totally did not expect that. This was back at a time when few games had endings so you never really knew what would happen. Not only was I glad to see something rather than just "Game Over", I'm treated to this beautiful FMV that tells the end story.
Then, just as I think the video is about to end and Sonic strikes a bad-ass pose, the video shrinks down into the corner and the credits start rolling AS MORE VIDEO BEGINS TO PLAY! I nearly shat myself. I clearly remember saying "Holy shit! This is like a real movie's credits!" It was epic beyond words.
Being an American, I saw the US ending (which didn't have sound effects and the US soundtrack) however I've now come to realize the Japanese/EU ending is supeiror if only for having some of the original sound effects. Granted, I prefer Sonic Boom but here's the ending in all its glorly. This is the GOOD ending. Watch it and marvel.

So, aside from sharing this video, the main reason I'm making this post is to point out why SEGA doesn't mine any of the gold from Sonic CD such as the time traveling aspect as well as the unique enemies. It had other interesting gameplay mechanics too like treadmill switches and anti-gravity (which showed up some in Sonic Advance). I do remember reading that the original Sonic the Hedgehog was supposed to feature Time Travel aspects as well but they couldn't fit all the stages on the cartridge to do it so they left it out. Just seems like a missed opportunity by SEGA to ignore what this game has to offer the franchise.
I know, I'm more peeved about the whole episode idea. I rather just name them as complete games like Mega Man has done. It just makes it sound tackier and leaves them open to stretch that dollar for minimal content in future releases. It's not the biggest thing but just seems very needless.Teknoman said:Episodic = 1 complete Sonic game per episode (not cut up full Sonic game) Think the way Sonic 2 - Sonic 3 + Knuckles, since apparently they called Sonic 3 "part 1" in the first place.
I know the episode 1 subtitle really isnt necessary, but if they went with Sonic 4, I guess they didnt want to call each new download entry 5,6,7,8, etc.
Art style = unless you're complaining about the model...which was kinda expected anyway, the few seconds of the first stage shown really isnt bad...
EDIT: What was wrong with Sonic Advance 1?
