Mobile is not one of their positives. It is one of the major reasons for their losses. Tech nerds on GAF and Android blogs love their phones. The actual consumer does not. What does Sony have at this point? Insurance, Playstation, Mobile and whatelse?
Come on Sony had plenty of opportunity to make money. If the IP itself worth so much money why didn't Sony buy Marvel? Sony was spending money on Bond franchise etc so you can only argue Sony make bad investment decisions.
Did he? I don't remember him saying that.

Each theater company negotiates on profit sharing rates on a per movie basis. It's very unlikely that they were able to get as good a share as you're assuming for a movie as large as Spider-Man.

Here's the thing, they have been bringing their A game and still are now in terms of premium smartphones.
Consumers would bother because what they demand the most are important measures such as battery life and their phones definitely deliver there. If you really think Sony is struggling right because their flagship phones are inferior to competitors, then you are truly clueless. Look at reviews for the Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z1 Compact then come back and talk to me.
Sony is struggling in the mobile market because that haven't been effective in the distribution/marketing of their flagship line up in key regions around the world (mainly the US) and because haven't achieved profits they expected from their bloated amount of mid-range phones.
I don't know why you're holding a grudge above some old shitty Sony phone that you bought back in the day.
I don't understand what you are trying to say. My post was basically stating that Sony Pictures wasn't doing well for awhile and the investment of getting the film rights to Spiderman and to a lesser degree, the Bond movies, didn't pan out.
As for Sony Pictures buying Marvel, I don't think they had the cash reserves to do so.
You were saying, as far as I read it, making movies for IP you don't own is a bad business because the margin is too thin. My point was that I disagree with that sensitive. It's all down to execution. Its possible to own alot of IP without making any money on it.
Also, I disagree about the theater as well. In the movie ecosystem, theater are in much lower position in the movie food chains than the studios. Alot of movies they don't make any money on them until the movies' runs are long enough.
What are the chances of a large hedge fund or something similar buying Sony? Not sure it would be a good thing mind you.
Curious who's going to be Sony next's CEO by April. Who's the head of Financial Services?
Kaz can go back to PlayStation and do press conferences. Andrew House is too stiff.
I wonder what their patents are worth? Or their manufacturing? As a whole? To many problematic assets I guess, so low. We can talk if they made enough cuts in a short amount of time.
Basically, Marvel/Disney is sold rights to Sony to make elaborate marketing "ads" (movies) to sell merchandise that Sony doesn't get a dime of.

Katsumi Ihara is the mastermind behind the lifeblood of Sony (their Financial Services division).
What's keeping Sony from selling insurance and their financial services in America and Europe?
Stop calling me names just becuase people disagree with you on an internet forum. Let me explain to you why Sony is going to shit. Abe has been pursuing a cheap yen policy to stimulate economic. So far it has failed. It hasn't increased export and it has made import products more expensive. And its draging Sony down as well.
Abe is also remilitarizing Japan so basically its pushing South Korea to China. China and South Korea have agreed to sign aggressive treat treaty by the end of the year, and they may be able to get Taiwan on board as well. That means darker days ahead for the Japan economy and her future trade prospect in Asia. Unless Sony start making tanks and submarines for export Sony is not going to sell more "made in Japan" products in the future.
As far as the Xperia Z, it was 100% a flagship phone and the best Sony engineers could produce at the time of its release. I have used 10+ android phones so I don't live in a brand bubble and let brand royalty brainwash my judgement.

Now you're just being silly
What's stopping Sony from being strictly a gaming Company?

Sell the damn spiderman rights already sony!!

Low profit margins...it's not worth it.
Sony makes the bulk of its profit through its Financial Services division.
To sum up, Sony probably made a little money from ASM2. A buyout for the franchise could be attractive to them. The current rumors are that they are entering some kind of joint production agreement with Marvel/Disney.
Wonder if Disney would pay $2 billion for Spider-Man (lol).

I tried to stay quite but you guys are just trolling. Kaz isn't going anywhere. He'll save the company; just you wait and see.
I admit I don't know much about finances and numbers (for the people that demand I be a financial analyst to have an opinion) but I do know how to believe in a brand with the history and dignity of Sony. That's something to be proud of. I wish I could take a little piece of me and put into all your heartsto make you all remember how Sony has made your life better. Doctors say that there's actually a healing attribute of being positive and I want to believe that can apply to a corporation as well.(oh god I know it sounds corny but please don't mock me... this is difficult enough to type)
For a place that's so quick to call out corporation being gross with numbers instead of caring for its consumers, why don't we stop being so affected by these numbers and show a little love. I'm not suggesting people go out and do anything they can't afford but If you like what Sony's done for gaming then go out and buy their product and show your support.
#savegreatness
That seems way too low. Even a "failure" like ASM2 will probably net them half that amount when DVD sales and other licensing is added in. Sony would have to be really desperate for cash to sell Spidey for that amount. They could put out a low budget sequel or two and make that amount if they wanted, or make more than that if the next ASM movie turns out to be a huge hit.Maybe $500m at the very, very, very most given that Disney would have to totally reboot the character again from scratch with new actors, creative team etc.

Sure, I was just giving the Sony point of view. The Disney math would be to figure out how much more $ having Spidey in the MCU would bring it (probably not much) so I can see where you are coming from too.But Disney already own the IP. All they would be buying is the theatrical rights to the character and it's associated 'universe'.
They would still need to finance and distribute the new films themselves. They aren't buying a product, they are buying the blue prints. Huge difference.

But how does Nintendo do it then?

They should sell playstation and and double down on their smartphone division.
Afterall pachter said consoles are about to go the way of the dodo and everyone knows mobile is the future.
(lol)
lol at everyone hoping Sony sells the rights to Spider-Man not to help out the company, but so Marvel gets the rights back to make a Marvel Spider-Man movie.
Insurance is a grounded market in America and the big banks would never let another competitor enter the banking sector. Sony would get decimated. What's keeping Sony from selling insurance and their financial services in America and Europe?
