Sony Is Dealing With PlayStation 5 Shortage by Making More PS4s (only producing about 1 million for the entire year)

You guys are just trolls at this point. Let me guess.......you fully support yourself and others buying a Xbox Series S though right?

Well, I don't need one, but yeah, I do support people buy an XSS if they want it..? I don't get the point you're trying to make. I like my PS5 but right now if you aren't interested in Demon's Souls, Returnal or Ratchet then spending $500 for improved framerate/resolution and load times is a pretty massive ask for a lot of people and I completely understand why someone would sell the system.

Ah. Peace and quiet. #ADayWithoutAWoman
While this was obvious, this wasn't the message that Sony was conveying, they were saying a clean break was necessary for true next gen games, then went and announced most AAA games as cross gen. And now this.

They NEVER said this! You're lying.

1. Millions of people do seem to disagree with the bolded.
2. Why the heck would someone sell their PS5 to get a PS4? It's literally the dumbest thing in video gamer history to do. It's hustling backwards.
3. People always seem to say 60fps matters to them, and yet we're now to believe improved framerates of today's best games "don't" matter? Come on man.
4. Decreased load times is a quality of life feature that's super undervalued. But once you get it, there's literally no going back. Only an idiot would want to go from 4 second load times to 90 seconds.
5. There are some posters that are super PRO Xbox Series S, that are trying to turn this thread into something it's not. It's clear as day and we know their motives.

You're acting like everybody thinks and feels exactly the same way. Millions of people feeling one way doesn't discredit the people who don't. You can't just say "people" care about a things like 60fps, "people" aren't a group. Selling a PS5 right now isn't dumb if you're not enjoying it enough to justify the cost and can sell it for more than you paid for it new. You do know that, right? Used PS5s still go for more than RRP?

The cost difference between systems might not be much to you and I, but it might be to a lot of people who feel like not having to wait a minute for a game to load between levels is not worth what the $500 they paid to upgrade their console, after they've learned that they could play nearly all the same games on the box they had before. If you really can't understand that then you're severely detached from reality, it's not about people wanting to go back to inferior products, it's about whether the new one is worth the cost at this time.

My PS5's not been turned on for 6 months and won't be until Horizon 2, but you won't catch me calling people idiots for being in the same position and selling the thing until there's more games for it. It's not a bad idea at all, I just don't need the cash back.

Not sure what comment you are referring to. You asked why PS5 had BC and that's what I answered. Are you talking about your comment suggesting PS3 remained in production in order to outsell 360? That's just speculation, nothing to invalidate.
No, if you go back to the communication, FranXico FranXico replied to my comment (speculation) by bringing PS2 sales. I wanted to show that even if it looked the same for PS2 & PS3 (selling consoles after their next gen started), their motives could be different and has a chance to be different.

For example, PS3 launched with PS1 & 2 emulation, but it was then later removed. Why? due to high cost and they wanted to bring the price of PS3 down.

Was it also cost that did not allow PS4 to have PS3 emulation? Not exactly; the architecture of PS3 would prove impossible for PS4 to emulate PS4 games.

So, a similar phenomena (a Sony console lacking backward compatibility of its predecessor) could have 2 different causes.

I really hope this doesn’t mean they’ll stretch crossgen out even further.
Hopefully it’s just to meet a possible increase in demand because of Horizon FW, GT7 and God of War Ragnarök.

Still, doesn’t sound like a good thing to me.
Crossgen was already stated till 2024 for Sony while people were bitching about MS saying crossgen until 2022 so 🤷🏾‍♂️

Ok......don't necessarily disagree with any of that. And again, my response wasn't attempting to invalidate anything, simply answering the question.

Perhaps if you played some games on those PS5s instead of flipping them then you might have a different perspective. I'm more inclined to game on Xbox and/or PS5 than PC at this point due to the substantial reduction in loading times. I fired up Halo Infinite on PC all of one time. Same for Forza Horizon 5. Stark difference in that regard. And like @DeepEnigma said, we are finally getting PC level performance on consoles. But if you just want to flip consoles rather than play the games then that's up to you.

Fair enough. I've enjoyed the consoles thus far myself. To each their own.
Well I have an XSX so I understand the reduction in loading times. However, I also have an SSD in my PC so I get that same benefit. Now I have not played Halo Infinite or Forza Horizon 5 on my PC to see if the loading times on the XSX are that much quicker, but I do understand the benefits an SSD brings. But $500 for better loading times? LOL, not a great value prop

You do realize that PSVR2 is coming out this year right?
A niche product that will not draw in the mainstream? What's your point? I made that comment as of today and saving it wasn't a great value proposition today. You're talking about the future, probably the end of this year. Quite a ways away!

PC SSD isn't the "same benefit" as console SSD at all due to the lack of dedicated hardware compression. This is what Direct Storage and RTX IO hopes to provide but PC isn't there yet.

And no, $500 isn't just for "better loading times". Better visuals and frame rate.....you do get that, right? Why did you even bother buying an XSX? Why not just flip it like you did all those PS5s?

That may not necessarily be true, don't be surprised if at least one or more dev scramble to announce downported versions to last-gen that may not have been announced/known before.

Whichever devs using crap-methods like last minute downports I want no parts of.

That’s how we end up with shit-broken games.

LOL

I actually took some of the profits I made on flipping and kept the XSX. If it wasn't for Game Pass I probably wouldn't be too thrilled with my purchase. But fair point. Right now there isn't a ton that couldn't be played on an Xbox One. At least going forward Microsoft is all-in on current gen. I guess that is the benefit of doing day one releases on PC. Less risk in making the jump to current gen!

If I were Sony right now, I'd probably be looking at the red-hot sales of the Xbox Series S which has been able to side-step the chip shortage and thinking why we didn't develop an entry-level console as well.

Sony would never release a Series S type console because the PS4 is already a good budget option for the time being.

It’s interesting that people say this but look at the next gen only selection of games on Xbox. The series S makes more sense for Xbox because most of their games are cross gen, I can barely recall a next gen only game on Xbox besides maybe the medium and flight simulator.

Sony at least has a handful of next gen only games to warrant the purchase of a PS5 instead of a PS4 like:

R&C Rift Apart
Returnal
Demon Souls
Deathloop (console exclusive)
Destruction all stars
The Medium

PS4 owners can get by with waiting until they get a PS5 because most of the big games are still available on the PS4 so why would it make sense for Sony to make a Series S type console?

Especially when they already have an all digital option that isn’t too far off from the Series S in price when you factor in the storage space and spec difference of both consoles.

The shortage is improving (slowly but it is lol last year was worst) and I don’t think it will stop the creation of next gen games going forward.

Yes, but they typically scale back production. Sony is making a million more PS4s than they did last year. They're increasing production!

Same difference as XSX and XSS. They play the same games, except with better fidelity on the PS5.

You can play every game (except three, I believe) on your PS4. For a lot of people that's probably not worth the $500!
They only scale back for demand. This scale back was due to chip shortage. Maybe because the shortage is easing up and they still sell globally to places PS5 hasn't even officially launched? I mean with the PS1 they released PSOne at PS2 launch and sold millions of it. It means nothing in terms of 'cross gen'.

You can play every xbox game on your xbox one except one yet you still bought an Xbox Series and here you are with so much concern for the PS5.

How did this stupid title, spawned 7 page of discussion?

It doesn't matter how much ps4 they make. Once that ps5 console hits 30m and above, there will only be next gen games.

Untrue. There are at least four to my knowledge you can't play natively on Xbox One.
L Lognor is clearly talking first party only otherwise he would have said PS5 games you can't play on PS4 is greater than 3 too. He even got that wrong because it's 4 if you include a game everyone has forgotten about. All games on PS5 not just 1P would be around 7 or 8 I think.

Out of curiosity what 4 games are you talking about?
The Medium which is also on PS5
FS2020 and...?

He doesn't say first party, regardless there are at least four games that only work on Series consoles to my knowledge.

If he didn't imply first party then he is completely wrong then.

Demon's Souls
Returnal
Ratchet and Clank
(I assume these are the 3 he thought of)

But there actually are others like Deathloop, The Medium, Destruction all stars etc.

Anyway, point being he is concerned about people not buying PS5 due to lack of next gen only games yet he went out and bought an Xbox Series which has the least next gen games out there.

This is NOT what happened. What people were upset about is that Microsoft said they weren't going to have any next-gen only games for the first 1 or 2 of the Xbox Series consoles lifespan. There's a difference.

I like how you assume every gamer cares about those games what if you don't like any of those games? then the PS5 offers absolutely nothing
and PS5/Series are on an even playing field thats the situation I'm in right now until Armored Core (a game I actually want to play) comes out next gen doesn't exist

DaGwaphics

You'd think anyone interested in playing those games on PS4 would own one already.

Agreed. This is one generation where I can't see the point of leaving the old units on the market, not with full backwards compatibility on the current-gen systems. Someone just coming on board and looking to play discounted last-gen games doesn't need a last-gen system this time. Neither does someone that has a last-gen system stop working.

What a wierd take.

They NEVER said this! You're lying.
The original Jim Ryan interview where people THOUGHT he said it, didn't.

But Sony was well aware of how that was percieved.

And months later doubled down with a pretty clear statement about games not being cross-gen.

Here's a snippet of the transcript from the summer 2020 PS5 showcase, where they showed HFW, GT7, and teased GoW IIRC.

We hope you've enjoyed the first glimpse of our future today.
71:27
You've seen our most striking console design yet,
71:30
and you've seen games that can only be enjoyed with the
71:33
full range of PlayStation 5's features and power.
71:37
At PlayStation we believe in generational transitions,
71:40
and we've put years of work into making them happen.
71:43
We want you to enjoy the unique benefits of moving from
71:46
one generation to the next.

They doubled down.. they knew exactly what people thought.. they even hid that Miles Morales was cross gen for MONTHS only announcing PS4 version a bit before release..

I mean come on....lol

Sony knew exactly what they were doing; they knew the internet made fun of Xbox for saying they were supporting cross-gen for 1-2 years.. they knew their "we believe in generations" interview was well received, and that people saw it as them promissing to not be like XBox (and lets be honest, they specifically targeted that interview).. and then they outright stated their games could "only be enjoyed" on PS5. Those games, by and large, are being released on PS4.

Sony is a bunch of shrewd as hell businessmen, not your friend.

Because one costs 4x as much as a used version of the other. This is about value proposition to some people who aren't you. If the money isn't a big deal then you probably don't downgrade, like me, but not everyone is the same. If someone gets a PS5 and realises they're paying ~£375 to play the same 2022 games with faster loading they might not consider that a good deal at all and it might be a good idea to downgrade until there's more shit worth playing.

Most people do not read industry news snippets and forums and don't know who Jim Ryan is. It's not unreasonable for Joe Public to assume that he "needed" a PS5 only to realise he actually didn't because the cross-generation bridge is going to last well into 2023. Just look at the sheer number of games that came out in 2015 (after the PS4 launched late 2013) that you could not play on a PS3. Compare it to the number of games coming out this year you won't be able to play on a PS4. It's not even remotely comparable. I know several people who are regretting buying the new consoles for this very reason.

At the same time, millions of people are perfectly happy with their purchases. This isn't about an objective answer, this is about people being completely incapable of understand other consumer's needs vs. means.

Casuals love cheap consoles and cheap games; if you hadn't gamed in a while you can pick up a PS4 and like 20 amazing games for less than a cost of a PS5 at retail, let alone what you'd pay scalper prices.

You'd instantly have a big library that could take a normal gamer years to get through.
