Spelunky |OT| With Fate Guiding My Every Move

Instant XBLA classic status for me.

I grimace a little when people call Spelunky and Isaac roguelikes. But the core formula that hooks me is undeniable.. I just fucking love punishing, procedurally generated, loot whoring, permadeath porn pablum.

Is there an issue with saves? I got to the jungle, died, quit the game, went back and my shortcut isn't there. I did give the guy a bomb. I went to my player stats and it shows my last game played and I died in 1-2, when I really died in 2-1

Giving Tunnel Man 1 object isn't enough to complete the tunnel. Visit him again he should ask for something else.

Okay, thanks. It's been three years or so since I played the PC game so I couldn't remember what all was required. I was thinking the that each tunnel added an additional step to unlocking it.

The way it works in the PC version is that to shortcut to 2-1/3-1/4-1, you pay him $100k/200k/300k respectively over time, with the catch that you could only see him in one location per game. No additional steps, just lots of time, replays, and cold, hard cash.

Ugh!

Was having a good (for me) run and was on 1-4 with lots of good gear, about to get to the glorious 2nd world for the first time when
I bought a hired hand (Grom?) from the shopkeeper and everything was cool until I decided to blast through a wall to get to the exit on the other side. I gingerly dropped the bomb and ran away from the impending blast, and the Hired Hand grabs the bomb, throws it at me, hits me with it and it blows up in my fucking face and kills me! WTF!? I'll never buy a Hired Hand again!
:(

I just realized there's a bunch of tallies on the cave wall at the start. Most likely a demoralizing as all hell death count!

I know that feel...

good lord.. this game is cruel. AREA 3 TUNNEL SPOILERS:
the tunnel man wants me to bring him a fucking GOLDEN KEY FROM THE MINES TO FINISH THIS THANG..!! AGGGHHHH!

I fucking love this game. Way better than Fez, and WAY better than Journey. So much fun, and all through really great gameplay.

Those dark stages, man... so difficult, especially when water is around. You can tell the randomness is set to make those levels a bit easier than they would otherwise, but it's still damn tough.

Also, I can't seem to make it through an entire world without killing the shopkeeper and taking all his shit. soooo much fun.

Luck was on my side and gave me a bunch of bomb bags, the treasure to see hidden items, and a shotgun hidden in a block by 1-3. I managed to get to 4-1 with 9 hearts, 8 bombs, and 4 rope but got insta-killed. :D

Managed to get ~120 on the leaderboard for that run. Pretty great first day with the game.

the achievement for playing 1000 games is going to be a cakewalk. a painful, death riddled, spider filled cakewalk!

The original song should be in the game! More upbeat music in general.
Might wanna fix the other half of that quote tag.

I am kind of surprised about the lack of the original soundtrack. Presumably there was some licensing problem.

Multiplayer is a freaking blast. Had 3 friends over tonight to play some Deathmatch and had all kinds of fun with the following settings:

Random maps, 10 bombs, 99 lives, 10 rounds.

Fast, frantic action. Would highly recommend people try out the gametype with friends.

Story mode is hard.. :(

I think the more accepted term is "roguelike-likes", but that's kind of a dumb term, so calling them roguelikes doesn't bother me. Spelunky and BoI have most of the trappings of traditional roguelikes, just with a different movement/combat system.

I think it shows up in remixed form in multiplayer, so I don't think it's a licensing issue. My guess is they just ditched it for style reasons -- I like the original music, but it's a little too upbeat for this game. The new music is moodier and fits the atmosphere better imo.

That's an odd comparison to make. This game really shares very little with Fez and Journey. Those games were made to be relaxed, experience type games while Spelunky has a VERY different goal.

I've been laughing my ass off all morning, the game seems to take it upon itself to piss off the shopkeeps anytime I'm not doing it myself.

Played the demo last night. Maybe I don't understand the core concept of this game, but what's the point of doing anything besides just rushing to the exit? Do you still progress through the game if you skip everything and go to the exit or do you have to collect a number of things before you can truly progress? The way I am seeing the game right now, it feels like the exit should be closed off until you aquire a speacial item or a number of treasure.

The levels get harder as you progress and so you need to make sure you are collecting items, money to buy items, and health in order to survive. Most of my best runs have been the ones were I went through the first couple of levels really slowly so by the time I got to area 2 I had some good items and 6-8 health. There is no way you'll be able to beat the game unless you spend time getting good items and tons of health.

had a great run from 1-1 to 4-1... and having been my first time in world 4 got my ass kicked pretty fast

also made it to 2-4 with the shotgun for shortcut guy and died. =(

Yeah, I just had it crash 4 straight times before getting it to play. It stops on the white screen with the one rotating dragon circle thing or whatever that is.
Hmmm there must be something weird going on. Maybe try deleting it and redownloading it? That's not normal.

I can't seem to find any use for the shortcuts.

Showing up in the Jungle without any items makes that section too hard to use as a stepping stone into the next area. I guess the mindset would be that you use the shortcut to familiarize yourself with the enemies and traps, and yet not actually finish it, but with the steep toll for the tunnel man, I'll have been there enough to not really care for shortcuts at that point.

This feeling might change once I get the Area 3 shortcut, just because that area seems relatively easy compared to the Jungle... god damn those Hornets.

I was so excited. I had a shotgun going through 1-4, got to an idol and the exit was right below me. So I bombed a hole so I could grab the idol, drop down, put away the idol, climb back up and grab the shotgun and leave. As soon as I grab the idol,
a fucking giant boulder comes tearing out of the wall so I panic and jump down the hole with the idol. The boulder obliterates my shotgun so I have no choice but to move forward without it.

Of course, I'm so excited to make it to 2-1 for the first time I immediately walk headfirst into a tiki trap and die. This game!
