Star Wars Rogue One - rumored plot synopsis? Comparisons to Oppenheimer...

Any chance these anthology films might spin off into multi arc installments? Think of a Han Solo trilogy, or a 2 parter in the same spirit as Avengers: Infinity War?

Rumor is they want Ewan back for an Obi-Wan trilogy. So anything is possible given enough interest/money makin.

Ewan has said that he really wants to do it, and he made a small voice Cameo as Obi in TFA.

It's totally happening.

Ewan with a good director and a solid script would be fantastic. Dude got fucked with bad material. He deserves an awesome Obi-Wan movie.

It's also sorta weird in that if the guy who improved the plans for the Death Star was directly related to someone in the rebellion, and defected with the help of his Rebel daughter, it's not really a case of espionage, is it? Nobody infiltrated the empire and stole anything.

Hmm...

Peter: So it sounds like with the anthology films you’re taking the sort of Marvel approach, like Ant-Man’s their heist film, doing different genre stories in the world — so is Rogue One the heist film of this universe?

Kathleen Kennedy: It is to a certain extent. It is definitely in the genre thinking but Star Wars is very different than Marvel in that they basically build their stories around characters, and then they seed those characters in different stories. Star Wars you know is a place, it’s a universe, so those stories are constructed a little differently than Marvel.

What if the heist is more of a rescue?

that sounds much more interesting than what force awakens ended up being. i hope they pull off that parallel without it feeling kind of ham-fisted.

Rumor's been around for like 7 months with nothing further coming from it, and it apparently sources back to Schmoes Know

Same guys who said Jaina & Jacen were in The Force Awakens
Same guys who said Snoke was Plagueis.

Granted, it'd be GREAT if it was a thing they were pursuing (be it trilogy or single spinoff film) but there's nothing to the "rumor" besides the basic common sense aspect of it. It's like when people hear "rumors" about Netflix series or blu-ray releases. They're easy "rumors" to put out there because it'd be kinda silly for them NOT to do it at some point.

The ANH crawl, for reference:

'It is a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet. Pursued by the Empire's sinister agents, Princess Leia races home aboard her starship, custodian of the stolen plans that can save her people and restore freedom to the galaxy.'

Speaking of crawls, you think they'll use one for the spin offs? I personally doubt it.

I'm expecting a silent, quick fade-in fade-out logo, which would be appropriate when immediately following the Lucasfilm logo.

or something like this

EDIT: I don't think we're even gonna see the word Star Wars in the actual film.

Sounds real interesting if they decided to treat it that way. I should probably get onto watching Godzilla before this as well.

I'll say it's pretty likely because after they steal the plans they still have to escape with them.... in space...
yes, thats were the Tantive IV gets in the game.

No, serious, when I think of a large space battle, then I think of two fleets like in ROTJ, not two, three ships trying to flee.

3 ships fleeing from an Imperial fleet, after they break through the barricade the Rebel fleet closes in to cover their escape.

"If this station is ever built...we are going to see a war of the stars...Star Wars..."

Then it cuts to the SW text opening, screen goes down and we see JarJar Binks stealing the plans from Vaders ship

I hope Edwards doesn't make the same mistake he did the last time he made a movie with an acclaimed actor playing a nuclear scientist.

Donnie Yen goes berserk and charges up to Darth Vader. Mads Mikkelsen stares into the distance and goes in a deadpan voice "Let them fight."

Oppenheimer comparisons with Mads Mikkelsen as helping design the Death Star and then helping to give the plans away?

I'm so in.

I AM SO IN.

Unlikely since this is a movie about spies stealing plans.

Sounds like a space battle to me.

This sounds like it is going to be a lot of fun. I'm really digging them delving into the expanded lore of the Star Wars series and taking into it directions it couldn't go before.

Yeah but we only had one movie (first in 10 years), let's meet in 2 years when 2 or 3 more will be out, maybe not that mind-blowing, with 4 big games and so-on.

But Netflix can produce good mini-series. Or give it to a capable network. It think the format is more adapted to that kind of story, especially if the money is here to back-it-up.

I hate how TFA has weakened ANH and this movie's plot.
Why go to such an effort to leak/steal and analyze the Death Star plans when all you need to destroy a Death Planet 100x the size of the Death Star, fully operational and manned with an army of a million soldiers is a 2 minute brainstorming session 8 X-Wings and an ex-janitor giving some hints.

This is some flawed reasoning. The Starkiller Base and Death Star worked differently, so any 'future plan' could not have been used for the Death Star.

Is it reasonable to think that darth Vader is going to be in this film?
It's more plausible that Tarkin plays a big role in the movie. Vader was not much more than a general for the Empire at this point. Tarkin was the big man after the Emperor and probably oversaw the building of the Death Star.

You didn't get my reasoning.
I find the "oh so we have another Deathstar, let's brainstorm how to blow it up" scene in TFA so atrocious and how it is solved so easily that it seems all those efforts by rebel spies in ANH and ROTJ to destroy inferior and smaller or unfinished Death Stars feel weakened by TFA's easy out.

Rogue One concentrating on the effort to steal the plans is a good idea but when Episode VII shows you can destroy an evolved version that is fully operational by a 1 minute brainstorming meeting and a handful of X-Wings, it feels hollow.
