For offline mode disable your network connections. (LAN ports, wireless cards, 3G connections etc.)

As long as you're set to auto-sign in (and have done so online) offline mode should work fine.

If my net is down, steam will just time out as it can connect to the router so it thinks Internet is active.
Disable my network connections -> instant offline mode

But...if you start up your computer without an internet connection, can't you still use offline mode? o_O
No. It has to verified your account and game files to play offline. Unless I'm missing something.

Edit: Hmm, going to try what commisar said.

Edit 2: Doesn't do a thing.

No. Offline Steam requires Online. Great isn't it!?
I was made aware of that during my summer vacation...

This has got to be the most off-topic post in the history of this thread

Yeah I know. It's "semi" off-topic for ME cause I already own some of the Commandos titles on Steam lol. Sorry, I know people here are more informative than any other PC-related thread.

Was it sealed in crappy shrink wrap or proper plastic?

Yeah. Shrink-wrapped. Let's see how it goes... :P

Yeah lol. I love you all equally. <3

In other ON-TOPIC news: waiting for Steam to cancel my preorder for Deus Ex.:HR Hopefully they do it for it's so much cheaper elsewhere! Though it came with a gifted copy of Deus Ex:GOTY which I had already gifted to my brother (he hasn't played it though) so hopefully it's all Hassle-free. Oh and the TF2 preorder weapons...

Weird. Works for me every time I've needed it

Oh wow. I was completely unaware that Eidos Interactive (on in this case, Square Enix) doesn't have the rights to Commandos anymore, and instead City Interactive have the rights. No wonder the damn game is DRM-free!

The opening splash-logo has also changed and Eidos logo is not there anymore, instead it's City Interactive's logo.

Gotta see if the Steam version has Eidos logo or not...

I want a sequel so bad! I hope City Interactive makes it! :!

EDIT: Steam release is published by Kalypso Media Digital. How Bizarre!

Oh and Pyro Studios' resume is... interesting:

Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines
Commandos: Beyond The Call Of Duty
Commandos 2: Men Of Courage
Praetorians
Commandos 3: Destination Berlin
Imperial Glory
Commandos: Strike Force
Planet 51: The Game (Their ONLY current-gen game).

Don't even get me thinking about a new game in that series. That was not only one of my favorite series ever, but my brother's as well growing up. I'd actually sit there and just watch him play in amazement and then help him out if he gets stuck. It's one of those games where you feel like you just won a major award (The Christmas Story reference!) every single time you beat a level.

I wish I could find it for cheap. As long as it runs properly, I'd play that all the way until the BF3 beta drops.

Thanks for the info, oh well, was going to give it away considering I don't play TF2.

It's almost certain that Valve will update TF2 to make it tradeable in an upcoming patch, probably this week.

Yeah mojiimbo's right, my bad for not including that. Items usually go tradeable a few days/weeks after they're released, but since there's no fixed date or anything, no guarantees if/when we actually see it being tradeable, sadly.

I already posted what I tested earlier...I think the two cases I tried were having Steam running, and pulling the plug. Still worked. I think I then tried pulling the plug, then launching Steam -- still worked.

The one case I haven't tried is pulling the plug, THEN turning on my computer, then trying to autologin.

I know a website where you can get it for $3. Does it have to be Steam activated though? D:
Meh, cheap games comes before Steam for me. I just add the shortcuts to Steam and still get the benefit of the overlay. So any game that doesn't require Steam activation and is cheaper elsewhere is worth it. It's just that Steam happens to be the place with the best sales most of the time. :D

I mean, 14 bucks isn't bad on Steam, but every dollar counts for me right now and I rather save it for a new game than old games that I've already played. Although I don't think I've played them all.

i should have subscribed to your mentality and got Tropico 3 Gold for 2.50 on GamersGate :D

Just finished the original Prey for the first time. What could I say? Such a marvelous game it is. It is almost like a Doom 3 but better in many ways. The Doom 3 is better to me though, but only because I'm a fanboy of the series.
I strictly recommend Prey to everyone who loves old-school FPS flavored with interesting story and voice acting. 9/10.

You should have in that case. But anything considered my mentality usually isn't a good thing. That game is worth every penny though. Hopefully Tropico 4 will still sell well but will be cheap not too far into the future. Such a unique game. :P

I reset my computer and turn off the modem and unplugged the Ethernet cable. It didn't do anything for me though.

wanted to jump on Tropico 4 on GMG but seems like it may not be Steamworks (forum talk) gah

OK. I'm sorry but I really have to show this awesomeness.

This is "Commandos: Complete" collection, released February 2010. You'd expect retail games released in 2010 will be full of DRM and require CD to run, and the installation process is fucked up. Well, I can assure you it isn't the case.

Seriously. It's four simplest steps.

fFQnX.jpg

1. Autorun the disc. Select which game you want to install.

ZTTad.jpg

2. Click "Next" just once. Yes, just once. No need to read the ToS. No need to choose "installation type". Nothing.

uADsg.jpg

3. Wait.

7sfxg.jpg

4. Remove the disc and shelf it in your memories. Share it with friends if you would like to.

No really... That's it!

NO "I accept this bullshit. Install the damn toolbar for me as well. Let me read the Terms of Services. Oh, you need the CD Key? Let me look at it in the back of the... oh wait it's on the CD itself. You want to connect online and want me to register? Want my credit card information too? OK then! Wait, you want the CD to be inside while I play? Fine by me..." BULLSHIT!

What is this sorcery!?! Why can't more developers/publishers be like this?! :/

Sir Ilpalazzo posted on behalf of me about my problem with offline mode earlier. I think I may know what caused it too.

First of all, I still don't have internet, I'm on a random wireless network I found, which is part of how I managed to get offline mode to work again.

I moved into a college dorm today, and I'm supposed to hook up a computer to the network, open any browser, and it will get to a network registration page, where I enter my university credentials. Until I enter those credentials, EVERYTHING else is blocked on the network, however Steam doesn't know that, it just thinks my Internet is crappy.

What I ended up doing was using the wireless on my laptop to find a wi-fi network, then using virtual router, get a connection to my desktop. I could go online with steam, then do Steam > Go Offline.

The reason I couldn't just log in with my university credentials was because apparently the authentication server is down, who knows when it will be back (I hope they don't make it wait til Monday).

So the moral of the story is this:
If you're on a network that blocks traffic to Steam at the very least, and you plan to boot up the computer and have it be in offline mode, LEAVE THAT ETHERNET CABLE UNPLUGGED UNTIL STEAM STARTS SUCCESSFULLY IN OFFLINE MODE. After that, plug it in. Steam thinks you have full Internet access when in reality you don't. Since when you start it tries to update, it doesn't let you start it in offline mode after that because it thinks it is not completely up to date. If you plan to use Steam from a new place you aren't completely sure of the internet status in. Don't connect to the network until Steam successfully starts in Offline Mode.

Isn't there a way to get a paid proxy server to provide you access to Steam and beyond?

EDIT: Ahh. Nevermind. Credentials be confusing. Good tip, will keep that in mind next time! (In fact, could've used it when I moved a month ago!).

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but by "It didn't do anything for you" do you mean Steam worked before you turned your computer off, but the autologin never times out when you power it back on? Exactly what message did you get?

*edit* The description about going partially online makes sense. Steam would probably screw up in that case. :(

Just redownloaded Steam after a year of not using it and what trouble I had. It seems to hate my wireless connection so as soon as I boot Steam up my internet connection just fucks up constantly/dies. Thankfully I've got round that now by having a wired connection and it hasn't since been a problem. What a carry on.

I'm just downloading the Dawn of War 2 demo because the games are on offer at the mo so was interested in seeing how I got on with it.

To be dair, lots af games have express install options like the one you just used, doesn't work if you don't want to install the game on the same disk as Windows(Which is most people.)

So I downloaded TF2 to unlock my From Dust hat, it says that it can't be traded? Does that mean I can't trade it even though I signed up to the steam trade beta thing?
promo items are made not tradeable until the game is out to prevent people from trading the item then cancelling the pre-order. It wasn't a big deal until the RIFT promo, where this idea was really overblown and used all over.

However, Valve seems to have forgotten to make the from dust promo tradeable.

What was the big deal about the RIFT promo? I have a ticket for it but I don't really know what to do with it. Is it valuable?

After installing a new Windows 7 64-bit and gfx card, I am trying to reinstall the backup of my steam-games. But I can't get it to work. Steam can't find the files.

This is how the backup looks like, 65 gb.
dnnkwl.jpg

Doesn't it work because I installed Steam on a new HDD (not C this time) and because I've installed a 64-bit Windows 7 instead of 32 bit Vista which I had before?

Appreciate some help and answers.

Ha! This guy's totally wrong. I'm going to take a screenshot just to prove --

(close Steam, disconnect from internet, open Steam)

-- "Unable to connect to the Steam network. 'Offline Mode' is unavailable because these is no Steam login information stored on this computer. You will not be able to use Steam until you can connect to the internet again."

... oh.

Restoring from Backup Files

*Install Steam and log in to the correct Steam account (see Installing Steam for further instructions)

*If the backup files were copied to a CD or DVD, the process should run automatically when the disc is inserted. If not, run steambackup.exe from the disc

*If steambackup.exe is missing, please download this copy of steambackup.exe and place it in the correct backup folder.

*Continue through the Steam windows to install the necessary games.

I think you can find it in the Disc 1 folder.

You should've copied your steamapps folder to the new HDD/new partition before installing a new windows. Much easier and saves a lot of time.

Did you back them up through Steam using the backup function ? I think you have to install them though Steam also.

So, people, opinions on Retribution for $15, yay or nay? Is it best played co-op/multi or does the SP hold on well if I'm more into that?

Umm, why the hell is there 16 backup folders listed for that game? Should only be one, that might be the problem. Just in case, you are trying to restore through Steam right?

Edit:65gb O.o

It's 16 folders because he didn't change the default DVD sized chunks the backup makes.
