There are other third person shooter MMOs, and I don't think any of them are worth playing.
 
The final Egypt level (non-bonus) in Hamilton's Great Adventure can go fuck itself. Why the fuck did they start requiring bullshit timing out of the blue?

I don't play puzzle games for this kind of shit.

Yeah, that's where I've been stuck for several days now. At first, I couldn't figure out how to get past this portion, and actually survive to get the key on the other side without getting killed by a dart. I ended up giving up and consulting a Youtube video on that and finding out that
you're supposed to jump on the catapults at the right time and use them to shield yourself from the darts, something I probably would have never found out/tried on my own
. Even with that though, the last portion of the level,
with the rising/falling towers always gets me. I know they just alternate between three different states in the same order, but I just can't keep all 3 in my head at the same time, and the sand-conveyor-belt things on either side of them make it even harder for me to get the timing right
.

I really want to finish the game, or at least get to the last world, but this level has pretty much killed it for me. I mean, if they included some sort of quick-save/save anywhere function, so you could save after doing stuff like using the blue-key, it would be one thing, but I really just don't have the patience to keep doing the entire level over again when I mess up my timing on that last part. :(

I haven't played War Inc., so maybe I'm wrong, but it looks like the persistence defines it.

Edit: You mean 'would consider', right?
 
I started playing Last Remnant today and man it's like the perfect example of why I don't like jrpgs anymore. I don't even know why I bought it, I guess I got caught up in the excitement of it going on sale.

Steam says I've put 40 minutes into it so far and I'm going to guestimate that at least 25 of that was spent in cutscenes. Very poor cutscenes too, between the usual crap jrpg voice acting and cliche character appearances and the incomprehensible story (because nothing's being told, it's just random things happening)

Most of that remaining time was spent in battle and yeah people were right they really do just throw you in with the least amount of info possible. So I stumbled through ok but I have a problem with the battles too. Everyone was saying the main draw of this game was the battles but (so far) 90% of it I find myself watching all the action. I pick from a menu and watch the rest, like I did in 1997.

So out of my 40 minute playtime I maybe played about 5 actual minutes and watched stuff for the other 35. Not impressed so far but I will soldier on sometime...probably when I'm done with Bloodlines.

If I remember correctly the start is very cut scene heavy but it gets better. The battles can be bit dragged out imo, you tell everyone what to do then watch it all happen for a few minutes. I didn't get that far into the game but it was okay I guess, should probably get back into it.

I mean if having persistence is the defining attribute to something being an MMO outside of player counts, then I'd disagree on the basis that it'd be silly calling TF2/BC2 MMOs following the same logic.
 
I'm being lazy posting this here, but: Is there any way to turn off the HUD in Darksiders? I've forced Antialiasing, Supersampling and Triple buffering and I want to turn off the mini map for maximum purdiness.

I haven't beaten it, but I've gotten pretty far into it. The beginning of the game IS a bit boring because of not only the heavy cut-scenes, but also you don't have/aren't allowed the numbers yet to make a formidable party (which is part of what drew me to the game). In my opinion it gets better when your party opens up a bit and you can add more members to your unions, but yeah the "choose what to do and then watch" part doesn't really change as far as battles go because it's that's just the battle system it's got. It does get more strategic though when deciding which skills to rank up on which party members and who to pair them with as the game goes on.

The single thing that annoys me about the game is when it doesn't give me the option to do something in combat because it's not relevant to the fight at the time, since all your orders are supposed to be modular and reflect the battle as it currently stands. eg. I'm fighting a boss that two-shots a union --> I want one union to be healing pretty much every round to keep us alive --> if things line up incorrectly and I end up with full health unions at the wrong time, I can't tell my guys to heal because everyone's already healthy. Then when the boss gets two turns (his turn, and his free counter attack) and downs a squad, I'm screwed. Or when I'm trying to hold a union back to heal and buff my other ones, but then as some point my only option for them is to "engage", coercing that union into a deadlock that I didn't want. Forcing the player to do shit like that just takes away from the whole positioning/flanking system they have in place, which is otherwise pretty cool.

Still a good game though and I'm working on finishing it. The story is a bit tough to follow (read: kinda dumb) but the game gives you lots of options about what you can do at any given time after the very first part at least; tons of side quests and new towns open up.
 
Just bought Tobe's Vertical Adventure because I am a sucker for pixel art. Never heard of the game before. I'll make sure to return to this thread with impressions (unless someone makes an OT) once I've played it a bit.

Edit: Well, scratch that. I hear some music when the game goes fullscreen but as soon as I click anything it crashes to an error message. just played the first two levels of Tobe's and i fucking LOVE it so far

it has some issues (doesnt support my resolution so it goes to 1280x720 wich aint very nice) and when you launch it its all black till you hit ESC or you alt-tab it, but those are all fixable with patches.

I find the game to be very fun and had ZERO problems with the controls at all.



.. now i just wish i fuckin had $4.5 right now, lol
 
I'm trading a Warhammer 40k Dawn of War 2: Retribution key for FO:NV Old World Blues DLC if anyone is interested.

I had purchased two dow 2 retributions on Amazon and tried to talk some friends into taking them so I could get them to play with me but no dice, so I have 2 keys not being used.

where did you play the first two levels?
 
I gave Tobe's Vertical Adventure a little more time, and after playing with the controls a bit more and playing through the last two levels, I'm having a lot more fun with it than I did initially. The source of my frustration, aside from the default control layout, was the sluggish feel to the game - jumping has an odd lack of acceleration to it that isn't quite predictable at first (especially after playing games like Super Meat Boy or Super Mario), and there's a lot of animation you can't cancel out of. It doesn't take too long to get a feel for it, given a chance, and the rest of the game's really charming. Wishlisted for some later purchase

Tried the demo for Tobe; I can see what people mean with controls, but it's more a physics problem. Also the whole JKL and WASD control scheme is a bit stupid. Neat graphics and cute music though. Nothing bad about it!

You take the key from Green Man Gaming, throw it into Steam and the game functions identically as it would had you bought it from the Steam Store.

I didn't really expect much. In all seriousness it plays pretty damn close to the jrpgs I played on PS1, just that the battles are naturally flashier and bigger but it still plays similar: Pick a menu option -> watch all the good stuff you should be playing.

Almost certainly. I think the only times that region makes a difference for Steam are censored German/Aussie versions, and the super-cheap Russian editions.
 
I realllly want to like Tobe's, but some of the handling is throwing me off. Gamepad support is a little sketchy as well. I wonder if they plan on doing updates to it.

Playing The Forgotten Sands. I really like it except for the water parts. Every time there's water parts I groan.

Fuck the water parts.

you should try using a mix group of unions, don't have a dedicated heal/buff group (each union should have a healer), this way also any union can revive another. then turn off most the "attack arts" of the buff type in each union. also you use a mix of formation speeds to set up the timings of which unions act quicker. near the end game and special "rare" monsters and optional boss fights, using bluff (boosts morale = less dmg caused/more dodging etc) + cachexia makes the game kinda easy.
 
Dungeons of Dredmore is pretty great. It's a graphical rougelike with a touch of the humor from Zork with Monkey Island inspirations. Definitely worth $5. I can see losing a lot of time to it.

One thing that is bothering me though - isn't the intro music the Pirates of the Carribean theme? I have a terrible ear for this but damn it seems extremely similar.
