I like to try to keep on top of my content, so I've just had a go.. but damn it's tough trying to find a nice enough solution.
I'm relatively new to PC gaming, only within the last 2 months or so, and I have 50 games installed at the moment which is already giving me an organisational headache.. and yes I'm aware the situation is only ever going to get a lot worse before it gets better.
So far and having just played around with afew category names, I've come up with Classic PC Games (everything Valve does etc), Classics 2000-2005 (everything I associate with PS2 era), Current Gen (stuff from 2006 onwards really), Indies and Favourites, which is usually the two or three games I'm playing at the moment. Not sure if I'm happy with that though.. it's not an elegant solution and there's afew games that could fit into a couple of categories.
How do you manage it? Suggestions very much welcome. Also apologies if this has inevitably been discussed before..
My categories are:
Started Playing - games I've started and can/want to finish
Played - games I've finished
Casual - things like Plants vs Zombies, L4D2, Frozen Synapse, Beath Hazard etc, that can be played in small chunks and you never really finish.
Eternal Strategy - hardcore strategy like Civ, Europa Universalis III etc, games that are really in-depth and meant to be replayed indefinitely.
Later - Games that are too demanding for my computer
Don't want to play - speaks for itself.
Maybe want to play - things I'm not sure about,
Want to play - The first category I look in when I want something new to play
Want to play - short - Same as the above, except I look here when I'm in the mood for something short like a Sam & Max episode, Nyx Quest, etc
This setup works great, because I've got a category for every occasion. I want something quick and fast? Casual. Continue one of the games I've started? Started Playing. Something in-depth to sink my teeth into that I don't have to worry about finishing? Eternal Strategy. Simply a new game to play? Want to play. Something short and sweet? Want to play - short. Perfect.
