Guys, need help. How do you folks organise your Steam libraries?

I like to try to keep on top of my content, so I've just had a go.. but damn it's tough trying to find a nice enough solution.

I'm relatively new to PC gaming, only within the last 2 months or so, and I have 50 games installed at the moment which is already giving me an organisational headache.. and yes I'm aware the situation is only ever going to get a lot worse before it gets better.

So far and having just played around with afew category names, I've come up with Classic PC Games (everything Valve does etc), Classics 2000-2005 (everything I associate with PS2 era), Current Gen (stuff from 2006 onwards really), Indies and Favourites, which is usually the two or three games I'm playing at the moment. Not sure if I'm happy with that though.. it's not an elegant solution and there's afew games that could fit into a couple of categories.

How do you manage it? Suggestions very much welcome. Also apologies if this has inevitably been discussed before..

My categories are:

Started Playing - games I've started and can/want to finish
Played - games I've finished
Casual - things like Plants vs Zombies, L4D2, Frozen Synapse, Beath Hazard etc, that can be played in small chunks and you never really finish.
Eternal Strategy - hardcore strategy like Civ, Europa Universalis III etc, games that are really in-depth and meant to be replayed indefinitely.
Later - Games that are too demanding for my computer
Don't want to play - speaks for itself.
Maybe want to play - things I'm not sure about,
Want to play - The first category I look in when I want something new to play
Want to play - short - Same as the above, except I look here when I'm in the mood for something short like a Sam & Max episode, Nyx Quest, etc

This setup works great, because I've got a category for every occasion. I want something quick and fast? Casual. Continue one of the games I've started? Started Playing. Something in-depth to sink my teeth into that I don't have to worry about finishing? Eternal Strategy. Simply a new game to play? Want to play. Something short and sweet? Want to play - short. Perfect.

I am always torn if I should just make a "Play/Unplayed" kind of sort. I may do it, especially since I can now just search for games, which makes my genre categories a bit unneeded.

My Steam categories are:

Active Rotation:
Complete:
Demo:
Intend to start soon: Games that will replace "active rotation" games once completed.
Started but have not finished:

Everything else gets placed in categories once my current/waiting to play list is depleted. Of course this being Steam. Some games never make it up the list because of the constant new additions.

Just finished Bastion for the first time. Game ends so strongly. Will be playing NG+ soon.

edit: We're doing categories?
"Now Playing"
"Games"

I set up a pretty elaborate folder system (unplayed, partially played, completed etc) but when I logged into Steam with my laptop, all of the folders disappeared.

Last time I ever try to categorize my games on Steam.

Finally!

It's been fixed for a while on my wife's PC but would never update on mine. I deleted my appcache directory and forced it to update all the icons which finally repaired the Limbo icon but then ...

Why you trolling me Valve? :(

YES!! Really excited about this one. Steam Cloud and Steam Leaderboads. I don't see Steam Achievements though unless it isn't listed. It also comes with some free DLC. Will be buying day one for sure.
Jeez too many $14.99 games that I want. Bastion, S.P.A.Z., and now this, and that's on top of Deus Ex: HR and Space Marine.

First I've heard of this game. Is it a point-and-click adventure?
To an extent. It's similar to Machinarium in spirit. You don't really move your character, but you click on things in the world and he'll walk over to interact with them. It's divided up into levels, so it's fairly straight forward. Pretty charming light adventure game, that has the occasional vehicle sequence which isn't very good. It's a nice laid back experience. Good Sunday afternoon game. I picked it up for 3.75 during the summer sale, but for 4.99 regularly it's a pretty good time. Play Machinarium first though, if you haven't.

Want to get might and magic...... and I want to support the great devs.... bought it on the DS even....

But ubisoft on PC >__________>

Man I can't fucking keep up w/ PC gaming right now. It's fucking exploding right now. I am behind due to my last semester of college in the spring. Working on Bulletstorm, DS2, and Fallout:NV. Yet I have so many good games left to get.

Thank you based god.

And I was just about to blindly preorder it too. Hmm, ubisoft...

Yes...i love soooo much the DS version...

This is only a remake?

I only see Avadon at #4 on the list of new releases, but I am pretty sure that one is chronological.

MW3, as a preorder, is already #15. I am pretty sure that just went up for Preorder too on Steam.

I always heard that the top-sellers list that appears are for your region only. When people comment that game X is in position Y it's not unusual for it to be at a different position on my top-sellers list.

And with that said, Avadon is nowhere in my top 20 best sellers list right now.

How exactly do you go about filing a support ticket to get a refund for a preorder? I pre-ordered RO 2 the second that it went up, and now they've changed the date, and there is still no word on when the beta will begin. I would have had a good month playing it before school + work + onslaught of amazing fall games, but now with only a couple weeks I would rather save my money and get it on sale later.

I don't know if this goes here but anyway, I downloaded and played HF2: Lost Coast and HF2: Deathmatch. After exiting both games Steam started to download vanilla Half Life 2.. WHY? I didn't ask for it, and I haven't purchased it either.. it just started to download automatically.

You have to create a support ticket on the support website. Since it hasn't been released you shouldn't have any trouble, just say you'd like a refund for the pre-order.

Yeah, I've played Machinarium already. This sounds good but I want to get some other point-and-clicks out of the way first. Thanks for the impression.

Lost Coast and Deathmatch require assets from Half-Life 2. Things like guns, sounds, barrels, and textures. Instead of downloading the same things multiple times for Lost Coast, Deathmatch, and Half-Life 2, it will just download these files once (as Half-Life 2) and use them for the games that need them. I think.

I organize them by backlogginess: Finished, Unfinished/In Progress, Not Played/Not Started, Online (TF2, etc), Casual (rhythm game category), and Zero Intent To Play (for junk). It's pretty straightforward.

Correct, and this would've been my answer as well, if it wouldn't have been for him saying that it started AFTER he exited the games. All dependencies are downloaded before you start it, for obvious reasons. Could it be however that his Lost Coast and Deathmatch had downloaded enough of the gfc's and then continued with HL2 to finish up? Maybe, another guess of mine is that he might be new to Steam and it might've been a sync instead. Still, unless you're bandwidth capped HL2 isn't that big and should hopefully not be that big of a hassle.

I've been out of the loop recently - what was the From Dust fiasco?
Apparently, it's locked to 30FPS. It has no v-sync and very few graphical options. The mouse/keyboard controls are also supposed to be very poor, although a few people seem content with them. Oh, and Ubisoft lied about the DRM.
