Well, I went and canceled my pre-order. 40€ for a game not so well optimized but more importantly just...average seem too much for me. Also the Timeless is not so great too, a 115 pages behind the scene book, a bluray and nothing else.

I hope Quantum Break does well on Steam, if only because Microsoft will likely be watching the sales figures closely. The better numbers QB displays off-Win10 store, the higher are our chances of getting other titles without WinStore exclusivity from Microsoft & its affiliates in the future.

And there we go. Thanks JaseC.

So I guess the Portal and Half Life movies are still happening. JJ Abrams discusses.

Eh.

I'm not too keen on the fact that Portal and Half-Life take place in the same universe, which I'm assuming will be true in the movies as well. Going by Half-Life and HL2 alone, the HL universe is a pretty believable science fiction setting. Then you throw in a shower curtain manufacturer-turned-defense contractor conducting increasingly bizarre experiments under a batshit insane CEO and my suspension of disbelief goes out the window.

(And I should probably take a second to explain why things like that bother me when "unrealistic" things like aliens, genetic manipulation or dimensional travel in sci-fi don't, since I've gotten that response from people before. Exotic technology, aliens, magic, or what have you are all good, as long as it's more or less internally consistent. But for me to take a story seriously, the behavior of people in it has to be believable. Who in their right mind would have kept working under someone like Cave Johnson as he spiraled into madness? How would half the stuff they were supposedly working on ever have progressed to fruition, and how could it possibly have been kept under wraps? All that stuff is great black comedy, and I've got no problem with the "Portalverse" as its own thing. It's situating it in HL's universe that doesn't work for me - it'd be like somebody saying Ghost in the Shell and Terry Gilliam's Brazil share a universe and trying to write stories around that.)

nidhogg 2 looks like doo doo

.
I dislike the look greatly.

The store page wasn't kidding when they said those were "monstrous visuals".

I think nobody except for UWP Defense Force thinks QB will do badly on Steam when compared to WinStore.
The real question is - will it do 100 times as well, or 1000 times or 10000 times.

Hmm, I can't load any page on Steam. Just black page and the loading icon / cursor blinking. Tried clearing cache, then reinstalling Steam, but nothing.

edit: Huh, seems to be DirectWrite causing it. Must have been the Win10 Anniversary Update I suppose. Text looks kinda crappy now though.

No. Graphics have never been an argument to buy Nidhogg.

Ehh, first one had a very simple style. This one looks like a FNAF game- the look is awful and is just youtube cash in look levels, I hate it personally. I can't defend it at all.

Soulsflarz is probably just being hyperbo-

OH GOD

Love you guys :3

The numbers were 2:98 with RoTR, i suppose it will be a tiny bit higher in favor of the Win10 store for QB, since it was timed exclusive, but i don't think it differs by a lot, PC gamers are patient with this stuff.

I'd quess it's gonna be 5:95

Not likely. Microsoft is proping up a product strategy, not worried about Windows store profitability.

Cutscenes are still streamed and cannot be downloaded for whichever reason, don't think you get any extras.

Eh, but I want to be sure. I remember for Alan Wake they added stuff (to sell it later as Collector's Edition), or there were additional contents from the beginning.

Not sure if old, but the Sonic Generations Casino Night DLC is now free for everyone that has the base game.

The timing of this is also perfect. SEGA has been releasing a surprise old game of there's with a PC port every year in October/November, it started with Typing of the Dead: Overkill in 2013, then Valkyria Chronicles in 2014, and Sonic Lost World in 2015.

The random update would mean SEGA is going over their PC stuff right now, and as we're entering that time of year again, I do have my suspicions. Given since this year is Sonic's 25th anniversary, I wouldn't be surprised if it was a Sonic game.

Quill18 has a playthrough of a press build of Civ 6 up. Watch it here.

Still not really a fan of the art style, but it looks like a Civ game.

Finished Soma. Incredible atmosphere, really cool setting and a fairly unique story that makes you ponder some interesting questions along the way. And then there are the monsters which seriously drag the experience down. They're not even that scary... just a big nuisance to your enjoyment of everything that makes the game so good. It's definitely something that everyone should consider playing.

@jshackles, you asked yesterday whether you should play the game with the mod that removes monsters. Yes, you absolutely should. The monsters do nothing but slow your game down. When you see one you have to crouch, hide, look away from it and wait for it to wander off so that you can proceed to your objective. Then you go and press a button or pull a lever and that makes a sound which monster hears and then it'll chase you for a while. If you take damage and die you restart from checkpoints (no manual saving). There are times the monster will teleport in front of you and scripted events where it'll chase you and keep killing you until you figure out where you're supposed to go. It just breaks the pacing of the game.

I'm reminded of this game called The Novelist that came out a few years ago. It was a 'walking simulator' type game where you're basically a ghost inside a house watching the members of a family go about their lives. You could explore the house and read notes and do certain things that would affect the story. Now, that game gave you two choices when you first started it up. There was a normal mode where you were completely invisible and you could freely explore the house. Then there was a 'game mode' of sorts where you actually had to hide from the family members and if they saw you it would be game over. So they added a stealth gameplay mechanic to game, presumably to ward off criticism that walking simulators weren't "real games". Except they understood that the real value of the experience was in the story they were telling and not the stealth gameplay, so they made it optional. Frictional really should have done something like that with the monsters in Soma. Or just made it a straight up walking simulator, because those games have gained a lot more acceptance from the gaming public in the last few years.

Anyway, moving on... has anyone played this game called 35MM? It sounds kind of interesting, and Indiegala have an offer going on right now where you can get a 'free' key for the game if you spend $3 on their store. I don't actually want to buy anything from there, but I could spend a bit on some random DLCs or something if this game is worth it. Would love to hear opinions if anyone has played it.

I think I may be one of the only people who actually really liked the monsters in SOMA. Given I didn't play it like a hide'n'seek game except for one encounter and got by fine.

I know the first monster looks derpy as hell. Garbage bag with legs basically waddling around. Dunno how that scared the guy to death.

I don't get this post unless it's sarcasm.
1080p with scaling on is not native 1080p with this game.
I think it's a bunch of different 720p frame buffers combined or something like that. In any way, 1080p w/ scaling makes this per-se blurry game unbearable in terms of IQ, atleast if you play on a monitor.

OK. I wondered if it was the Scaling, but with it on the 980 ti is spitting out 75 FPS ave. Not barely maintaining 60.

Either way, I see it's not a good performer.

Careful mate there be tilted people among steamgaf
Sega could not even get a new sonic game released in 2016, most we got was a game based on the cartoon, so dont count on it ;p

I suspect they may announce more than 1 port or re release this year

Not likely. Microsoft is proping up a product strategy, not worried about Windows store profitability.

Corporate strategies are not set in stone - depending on the company, they may be reviewed, re-evaluated, and deemed unsustainable in the long term given some new data. Microsoft's strategy so far has been to focus on exclusive titles, counting on the simple fact that they can't be bought anywhere else to pump up their otherwise deficient store into something potentially on par with Steam in the future. Quantum Break used to be one such exclusive - originally only announced for XBox and WinStore. Only later, after the initial sales were over and done with, was it announced for Steam as well.

If the sales data proves their strategy isn't working, they'd be pretty stupid to continue with it without adjusting.
