Especially since I had just earlier bought the fantastic Tales from the Loop book by Simon Stålenhag which is sorta the same scenario, kids in the 80's discovers weird things happening in their neighborhood, related to secret government experiments.

I always get confused when I see people say this because as far as I'm aware, the creature was practical effects, animatronics, and a guy in a suit.

The suit worked for far less things than they had expected, so they had to use a lot of CGI even in scenes with the suit.
