Like, what? I mean, obviously there's lots of other shows out there but it's a pretty great show and not that much of a time commitment compared to, say, a shounen work.
I love Infinite Ryvius but I can agree with complaints about the last quarter of the show.

Kouji was an ineffective "main character". He didn't use the gun Blues gave him, he gets shot with the gun by someone that was his friend, you get the impression because he can see the spirit of the ship that he would have the highest compatibility with the ship, leading to him being able to control it and becoming captain. That doesn't happen.

You can slow down time, y'know.

It's never all essential anyway.

I spent half the time watching Bakemonogatari hammering the pause button. And I enjoyed it, damn it.

Natsume Yuujinchou is the only anime worth bothering this season. There, I said it.
I kind of like it, but this is just silly. It is an extraordinarily sloppy effort that often times finds itself directionless and without any real emotion to carry in scenes.

There are some ultra weeaboos here though, and it's been translated into the other fake-Asian languages.
I'm just curious to see how much of the anime was "Yuashit" as someone likes to put it and how much was the original authors intent.
Well, someone knows -
Ben said:
I haven't read the novel, but Yuasa has gone to considerable lengths to be faithful to it, which is testament to his professionalism. When I watched the first episode, I felt the nonstop stream of ultrafast narration to be extremely distracting and detrimental to the episode. I thought it would have worked better without any of it. It wasn't necessary. But in retrospect, I suspect that's kind of the point. You're not really meant to catch it all. Yuasa says he did this to capture the way the novel is full of the constant stream of thoughts passing through the protagonist's head.

Like Asuka.

I'm part of the Penguin Brotherhood™ at the moment.

I don't think that was necessarily a problem with the character, he was never presented as being anything other than what he was. Other people clearly had different potential.

I was going to add that perhaps it is part of the appeal of the series. It's different than having a show where the main character is always nigh-omnipotent in his universe.

Well, there's also the fact that
the people who were effective kept screwing everything up eventually.

Typical that OT2 would go up midweek between major show airings.

This place will be devoid of any meaningful discussion for at least another 2 days!

..then Bromance will sweep in and save us all in the form of Tiger and Bunny-chan
There's gonna be a lot of tears.

Steins Gate 22: Slow and steady wins the fucking race. I can't believe how far this show has gone since the beginning. It's all paid off in such a major way.
Well to be fair, the show started out being pretty shitty. The direction in the first episode was incredibly poor.

Watching oreimo for some reason, enjoyment seems inversely proportional to how much kirino is in an episode. she was so annoying in episodes 4 and 5 I almost dropped it, but episode 6 with troll-grandpa was pretty fun

Steins Gate - 22

Damnit. T_T

And here I was thinking how are they going to fill the next 2 episodes (this is a 24-er right?) then BAM dat cliffhanger at the end.

Sad things are sad... but I am not a fan of the non-typical World Theater Masterpiece drawing style.
Well you can't have Isao Takahata and Hayo Miyzaki working on everything.

Sadly. Those were the days.

Funny: I just read a bit of it a couple of days ago... The adaptation seems quite faithful indeed.
I'd very much like to see an adaptation of Morimi's Yoru wa Mijikashi Arukeyo Otome (where Higuchi and Hanuki are still among the main cast, actually), now, but news haven't exactly been good for Mad House, as of late, have they?
(and a "Yojôhan Ôkoku Kenbunroku" was published quite recently (in January)? huh)

Do you feel it improved over the course of the show, then?
I guess I didn't have that much of a problem with the direction, personally, but then again, I don't think I really have "the eye" for that kind of things... Could you give some examples of issues you noticed?

Yup, but it looks like there will be a special for the video release. I don't know what that's going to be (although I guess the first CD drama would be a decent candidate?).

You described what I like about it. Feels like a real/relatable narrative like this. Sometimes the chapters feel too disconnected, but I'm okay with it.
Not saying is the best anime haha just that it's the most enjoyable this season.
I gave Usagi Drop a try, but it's not my cup of tea. But if I had to guess, it's better than Natsume of course.

So which year was the worst year for anime in GAF's opinion?
2008/2009 are pretty dry years in terms of content. Hard to say without doing a thorough check.

Manly episode ;_;

Yes, 24 episodes.
I hope they save Christina. Fuck tuturuu~, I want a Christina ending ;(

Agreed. There isn't enough of Manami and her family in the show.

The latest episode of Anime World Order is out and as it's a convention report from Otakon there's not much to talk about here.

However, they do mention that ANN's reviewer manages to post reviews 30 minutes after they've seen a particular screening because they're writing the review as they are watching the movie.

Now I know that most people are already "lol, ANN reviews, whatever" and that's a fair opinion but I never imagined that it was this bad. I mean writing a proper review even a number of hours after seeing a movie is tricky enough, there's no way you can do it during a showing. That's just absurd.

Pretty much what I expected from them, but then my opinion of their reviewers is quite low indeed.

Sounds like video game reviews these days. Finishing the game before you review it is neither necessary not required!

Or sportswriters who don't actually watch the game, or tv reviewers, or... well, reviewing anything is a tricky business. I don't expect anything out of the people at ANN, anyways.

Anyone who doesn't want Usagi Drop's manga ending spoiled for them shouldn't listen to ANNcast this week either by the way, even though it's actual a good episode because Daryl from AWO is on.

I don't usually watch Bleach movies, or many movies adapted from a serialized manga at all. But the premise of Kurosaki and gang going to fight in HELL intrigued me. It was surprisingly good, a lot of well animated fights, although I'm actually partial to say that the best animated fight in the entire movie was the flashback to his fully Hollowfied form at the very beginning. Some of the fights felt a little too short.

Nevertheless, it was surprisingly good, I loved the darker premise and characters. One really got the sense they would do anything to get out of hell, and their infinite cycle of torture.

I've watched every Bleach movie and found them fun, for the most part. They're always flashy, if not much else. I had completely forgotten about this one though, thanks for the reminder. It looks like I have something silly to watch tonight.

Only saw the first episode years ago. I might like it if I watched more.

The first ep of Gungrave is not at all indicative of the rest of the series. I really have no fucking clue what they were thinking with that ep. It didn't give any context. It wasn't cool. It only confused.

The series does become much better. much much better.

I don't know, maybe 26 more episodes of Gintama, Sengoku Basara, 2 1 cour shows like Kemekko Deluxe and Kotetsushin Jeeg, Planetes, Red Garden. You get my point. Got a lot of stuff on the backlog.

I'm thinking more about the structure of the novel. Do the episodes correspond to chapters in the book?

I already said I know where you're going with this!

See, I don't really care about that if your game is 60 hours long. Or even 50 hours long, just disclose it, whatever.

Not finishing a movie would be pretty weak though.

Hey, it's an explanation from the director himself!

They should at least read the wikipedia article first.

You could let the good folks e.g. me know where those spoilers are so they can avoid them!

2009 had Shin Mazinger Z, Trapeze, K-ON!, Birdy Decode:02, FMA:B, and some movies I probably missed.

Pretty good I think. Now, 2008 is pretty dry. Casshern Sins and ?

Best way to avoid spoilers is to just not listen!

The Reviews thing is pretty shameful. Not surprised though.

Kamisama Dolls 09

What the? Seems a little late in the stage to be doing that. Decent enough episode though.

2008 is a year I absolutely love. Code Geass R2 and Clannad AS, it was literally the year for haters. Skip Beat (a crime there was never a S2), One Outs, Kaiba, Spice and Wolf and some others I remember. Not a great year but hardly the worst.

Jexhius said:

They come up twice. Once earlier and the other towards the end. If I could find them easily I would but it would take some digging. I think it even comes up as an out of context joke. You should probably just avoid the podcast altogether if you don't want to have it spoiled.

The show certainly went all out with the analogies this week.
They didn't even stick to one theme within a single analogy, it really bothered me. Still, a better episode than the last few.

Ueda Makoto probably is the guy you should look into, as far as the actual plot is concerned.

I'm thinking more about the structure of the novel. Do the episodes correspond to chapters in the book?
Not exactly, no. Now, I haven't read the whole thing yet, but from what I can tell...
The novel is divided into 4 episodes /
parallel worlds
:
1)
The film circle Misogi / Black Cupid one
2)
The disciple / Proxy Proxy War one
3)
The soft ball circle Honwaka / romantic intrigues one
4)
The secret society / "4 1/2 tatami world" one
The TV series took bits and parts here and there, and
rearranged the whole thing as 10 different parallel worlds (although episodes 6, 7 and 8 could be said to take place in the same one until the narrator picks a girl)
. So it's both surprisingly faithful to the novel (not just in spirit either: the setting and characters are very much there) and an impressive adaptation effort.

So, Oshiibros, should I get Ghost in the Shell Blu-ray? (the original, not the 2.0 shit)

It's currently 71% off at Amazon JP, but that's still around ~$54 with Amazon JP shipping factored in.

I really liked the movie upon a rewatch this year (like, a lot, enough to consider this purchase), but that's still a lot for a single movie. I'm not sure.

I wouldn't pay that much for it. Are they not releasing it in America?

Aigis said:
Nope, only the godawful 2.0 version has been released in the US.
That sounds exactly like the kind of stupid, ignorant decision that a Japanese company would force on an American one.

Zoids: New Century 1

I started rewatching this after going through the Toonami thread and remembering this show. After all these years I still fucking love Liger Zero.

[Anne of Green Gables 3]

This show is pretty great. There's only been like four conversations in three episodes, but they've been awesome.

They did throw in a padding scene with an insert song, which was a bit lame, but I can forgive them this time.
