Tropes (which we should really just call clichés) are terrible and lazy. Writing into these clichés is always disasterous, and results in characters displaying traits they shouldn't whenever they try to flesh them out. Character archetypes create boxes that force a very strict set of behavior on said character. When you post a link that says "Well relax buddy, it's just a story!" my blood pressure starts to rise, because then we end up with a bunch of one dimensional characters doing a bunch of predictable shit.
It's extremely difficult to create a character or write a story that doesn't contain tropes because there are so 'tropes' that you can't really create something that hasn't already been created before. That's not a problem though, really, I mean people have been creating stories for thousands of years.

I don't think tropes mean what you think they mean. They're exactly that: characteristics. It's not an end-all label. Tropes are just a fancy name (or, rather, a word label) to characteristics. Some of them may encompass an entire cliché or archetype (tsundere, for instance) but they're not the end of everything.

Tropes != clichés; clichés are composed of tropes but the latter isn't true. Or, rather, cliché itself is a trope that has been done to death and becomes trite, predictable, and ultimately distracting due to it's nature.

Really, though, I can see how if you do think that tropes = clichés that everything you said is basically true. I just don't view them as the same way. They're pieces of the whole, not the whole thing.
Oh wait, you already solved this.

My friend's in Japan at the moment. He probably won't kill me if I post this.

/edit on second thoughts i'll wait until i have access to some image editing software...

I was just asking why "intention" somehow undermines the characters by brining a case in which characters that were created with the exact same "intention" are somehow allowed to have deep.

Not once have I ever heard the persona waifus be called something other than the flat characters they are--not here. not anywhere.

It's my fault for bringing Gaming Side dicussions to the OT, then. My bad.

I hate the way people use trope like a dirty word. Shitty writing is going to be shitty regardless of whether a character or plot is original.
Just like a number of those "original animes" turn out worse than works based off a manga or novel.

Episode 20 of Hyouge Mono airs soon. Hmm...
Don't remind me :(

The Tatami Galaxy Ep. 1

I didn't think I would like the artstyle, but by the end of the episode I had kind of learned to appreciate it. Just watching that one episode has really tired me out. -_- Being stretched in two ways by the flow of visual and textual information, I don't feel like I could properly appreciate either. I certainly did find it enjoyable, though.

I beg to differ. Then again, I think it would be pointless to argue with someone who calls them "waifus."

You can watch the show fine without trying to get everything that goes on in the narration. It's not like native japanese speakers could understand everything that is being said either!

True, that thought did cross my mind while watching the episode.

your comparison of idol > Madoka characters is unfair since madoka is anything but a character driven show while the former relies entirely on the characters.

Honey and Clover.
Nana.
Ghost in the Shell.
Akira.
Nodame Cantible.
Gurren Laggan.
FLCL.
Berserk.
Deathnote (well, part of it at least)
PlanetES.

Any recommendations would be appreciated!

It gets easier to watch over time, for the most part.

Also, I was rewatching the part in episode 2
where they cover the short films Watashi produced.
Mind blown!

Really now? Don't get caught up on the ironic use of 'waifu', I'm more than open to a conversation on that.

Thanks for the recommendations everyone! Looks like Tatami Galaxy got recommended a lot so I'll check that one out first.

Koutetsushin Jeeg 1

Good introduction. Seems like they'll be a ton of hot-blooded mech action. Definitely has the potential to be awesome. Hopefully I'm not setting my sights to high, but I'm expecting this to be what Gurren Lagann would be if Go Nagai did it.
