I have this problem a lot. I'm always thinking of SOMETHING and that's why I don't fall asleep unless I am dead tired.cosmicblizzard said:Gintama 153
Oh god, that is EXACTLY what I'm like while trying to sleep. Fuckin brain won't shut off. Always contemplating the meaning of the universe or something. The way Gin acted at the end was pretty much exactly how I was after seeing Paranormal Activity for the first time.
And that dog story on the radio was sad as hell... until the end :lol
Jexhius said:Okay, so, I've never really rattled off a definition of what makes something well directed, but it should be pretty clear.
Characters
Characters generally need to fit in with the kind of work that they're placed in. What is Redline? It's an action movie - so at the very least you need some semblance of character from the major players, but nothing very complicated, because of the genre we're dealing with. Redline goes down an interesting route by having a large cast made up of really exaggerated caricatures - this is a really good move when combines with the movies outstanding character designs because everyone's pretty larger than life.
Sweet JP, his mechanic, his friend, etc all those guys even have a bit of backstory fleshing them out a bit further, but not too far, because it's not essential to the movie. As for the other racers, the movie uses a fairly neat device to give them their own brief moment to shine. Which is one of the best ways to do it in a movie of this type.

Watching The Girl who leapt through Time now, and the girl is a complete bitch. :/ Poor Chiaki, poor Takase-kun, poor Yuri. Please, girl, stop ruining other people´s life...

Miri said:I don't, however, agree that the direction in Redline was good, at all. The editing was sporadic--intentionally so in many areas, but it spilled into areas that didn't call for it--the camerawork in the latter half was messy and relied on the viewer to mentally 'fill in the blanks' so to speak, and really; everything about that second half fell apart, now that I think about it.

It was good, better than Summer Wars, but still not all that great.
I'm not even sure what your complaint is.Miri said:And on the topic of characters...Just because it's an action film? Since when has that been a free pass to pump out cardboard cutouts for protagonists--as exaggerated as they may be?
Branduil said:I don't think we can be friends.
Well, anyone with a familiarity with Simoun is probably reading them.Unknown Soldier said:An example of a sleeper hit is Simoun, for anyone who's following along with me. I don't even know if anybody, even i-d, is following at this point. I'm probably talking about this to nobody...
It's one of my favorite movies ever, so I'm afraid I have no choice but to defend it to the death. It's not perfect, of course, but what is?ninj4junpei said:I wanted to like it.
ninj4junpei said:I felt that the movie lost all momentum once it was revealed that Chiaki was from the future. My suspension of disbelief kind of broke at that moment and couldn't rebuild itself by the end of the movie.
The relationship between Chiaki and Makoto wasn't developed well enough for the ending to have much impact on me. I didn't understand his last words to her or the whole deal with the painting.
Also, Makoto's crying scenes were kind of awkward.

It was good, better than Summer Wars, but still not all that great.I don't think Satoko Okudera is a very good writer. I really like Mamoru Hosoda's style, but he needs to work with a better writer.I felt that the movie lost all momentum once it was revealed that Chiaki was from the future. Aigis said:Hmm... GITS BD is now 74% off at Amazon jp. It was 71% when I asked you guys if I should get it the other day, and it was 43% roughly a month a go and has been steadily going down ever since.
I wonder if I should hold out for 80-85%, lol.

Theirs only three main characters, their relationships are extremely well developed, that kind of the point.Branduil said:I thought it was very naturally developed. I mean Makoto and her relationships with the other characters is pretty much the whole movie..I'm not sure what's not to understand?
Indeed, that's one of the main things making it the superior film to Summer Wars, among others.Jexhius said:Theirs only three main characters, their relationships are extremely well developed, that kind of the point.
Branduil said:Well, people don't always cry in cinematically appealing ways.
I really can't agree with that. TGWLTT is full of little human touches that add up to making the characters very appealing and believable. Makoto's realistically awkward crying is one of those.Uchip said:it was more cinematically appalling
why does she cry like a baby? it would have been more emotional if she kept at least a little composure

Makoto isn't an adult! Also, most people don't cry exactly the same way.Uchip said:I have never seen an adult cry like that
DiGiKerot said:I've seen Simoun, but I honestly don't think it's as strong a show as a lot of people think it is. It's alright and all that, but whilst it's been a good few years since I saw it, I remember feeling the show had some problems in maintaining consistency of characterisation for a few cast members.

Probably. I actually found out that this is a reprint (with a standard BD case instead of a cool box, and the same MSRP. Bandai Visual lol) too. It probably got reprinted and sold to the few fans who missed it the first time around (or didn't because it has less collectible packaging so they just bought the previous release second hand as it was clear that the cool version wasn't getting reprinted) and nobody else, so Amazon is probably like "fuck, we gotta offload this shit. nobody is going to buy an old movie for this price unless they're megafans with deep wallets, and they likely already have it. just keep slashing the price and capture people at different pricepoints until we run out."Unknown Soldier said:I'm guessing it will keep going down until the final disc finally sells, after which it will go out of print.
The trick is to be the guy who buys the final disc in order to the get the maximum discount! Just don't be the guy after that guy! :3
As a result of all that attention is being devoted to such a small scale you get really great scenes.Branduil said:I really can't agree with that. Has your mech arm just been severed? Don't fret! You can still use it as a weapon! Just pick it up with your other arm and slam that bad boy into whatever pisses you off!

...First off, SAYA IS HOT. LIKE INSANELY HOT. Sexiest character ever? Holy shit I absolutely loved that semi-insane face she made when she realized she hadn't a clue what she would do if something were to happen to her "father" and she was absolutely gorgeous throughout the episode. Gotta love how brutally abnormal her thought pattern is too. Dense doesn't really apply to her imo. It's rather that she thinks on a completely different track than normal humans do.
