Super Smash Bros. "Special Broadcast" coming December 2015

Do they really have anyone on the level of the other third party characters though?

They have their Ryu, but honestly, I could see them having a rep in the form of Lana or Linkle. They're KoeiTecmo characters, but are part of the Zelda franchise. If all else fails, though, they could just add Kasumi or something; the 3DS had a full-on DoA game, so it's not like it's totally impossible. Any of those 4 would do it, honestly.

DO we know how many characters will be picked from the ballot? Could it be just one?

I feel that it might be down to three winners; one from a Nintendo IP, one from a Third Party IP and one from an Independent Developer IP. That way all three pillars of Nintendo support get a winner and that (hopefully) everyone is happy.

I feel that if Cloud isn't the third party winner, then we will get Snake or Rayman being the Third Party Rep, Paper Mario or King K. Rool being the Nintendo Rep and Shantae or Shovel Knight being the Indie Rep. Also can see two returning fighters (Wolf and Ice Climber) alongside a new Nintendo character (Inkling).

I think its pretty safe bet that Cloud, Snake and Wolf will get a December release as a package, similar to the Lucas, Roy and Ryu release.

And we will get an announcement on two of the ballot winners, one third party and one first party. My money is on K. Roll for the first party, but I want to dream that Banjo-Kazooie is the third party one, even if its a bit dumb a dream.

I really don't see there being any more characters released after this year. There will be three or four including Cloud released after the special presentation (and I'm thinking three), Midgar and one or two more returning stages, and that will be it.

....I could easily see that; lines up with my bet for three-five DLC fighters and I mentioned characters you state (Snake, Wolf, King K, Rool).

If things don't pan out with Konami, I could see Rayman or another Square Character (Chrono, Geno, Black Mage, ect)/Sega Character (Eggman, Nights) filling that role.

Could also see Ice Climber coming to both versions as well.

Don't rule out Namco either. Heihachi or Klonoa.

Crap X(! Sorry about that :(.

Considering we got Pac-Man and Bamco developed the game....could see that happening. I would love to see Klonoa being a Bamco DLC character but Heihachi is the more likely bet if they got another rep.

Cloud + Midgar
Snake + Shadow Moses Island
Wolf

That coincides with the three character slots and two stage slots found in the most recent patch.

I'm expecting the December presentation to open with Wolf's trailer, followed by a brief explanation from Sakurai. Then he'll move on to a more detailed explanation of Cloud. A new Mii costume trailer will play. He might talk about upcoming amiibo. Sakurai will say that the content is now available and thank everyone for supporting Smash Bros. He'll smile and take a bow. Fade to credits...

Cue Snake's trailer.

I'm going to post my predictions for this thing way in advance. They're going to be pretty realistic.

-Cloud will be talked about in more detail -- more just about how the hell Sakurai got the character in the game, why, and maybe a brief overview of how he works (they did it with Ryu in the last Smash specific direct and Cloud has some unique mechanics going on as well that aren't explained yet). Cloud is not the ballot winner, just a long-time fan request Sakurai had been aware of and he, too, is also a big fan of FF7 and Cloud. They will probably waste some time talking about Midgar as well. Mention he will be available (along with his stage) after the presentation is over for $5.99 like Ryu.

-Next they will talk about the Mii Costumes such as the Chocobo and other new costumes that will be available after the presentation is over.

-With Mii Costumes wrapped up and Cloud, they will dive right into new stuff. In no particular order, this will be two more characters coming out at the end of the presentation to make a Character Bundle #3 where you get Cloud, Midgar, and the other two characters. These two characters are also not ballot winners. They will both be vets or one vet and one new character. Either way, Wolf will surely be one of these characters. No additional stages will be coming to download after the presentation is over (not saying no new stages ever again, I just mean nothing else to download stage-wise). The extra stage slot is for something in 2016 or could be a classic stage.

-They will talk about the ballot, this may or may not include results. At the very least, it will define who the winner was (the one with the most requests that Nintendo/Sakurai could actually do). This character will just be stated as being in development and that they have nothing to show right now but please look forward to it in 2016.

-That will segue into future support for the game. I'm thinking they will end support for it in Q3 2016 (meaning we will still get patches and DLC all the way until the end of Q2 2016, before E3 2016). They will outline what the next patch includes (if anything significant) and what future patches in the pipeline may include -- though, personally, I think we will not be getting any more new modes. Patches will merely address existing problems with the game such as fixing Tourney Mode so you can have 1 v 1 tourneys and more options in general.

As part of the above, they will outline how many characters we are going to get by the end of Q2 2016. They may or may not say who since this is the last Smash specific Direct. They very well could say nothing about them and plan to just release the trailer(s) on youtube or in general Nintendo Directs similar to Splatoon and Super Mario Maker. I'm not going to try and say how many characters but chances are it would be another three (we've been getting characters, for the most part, in a group of three barring Mewtwo who was released by himself). This would end the character DLC at about an even ten characters, essentially a whole new Smash game's newcomer count and on-par with about how many characters other fighting games get for DLC. We're not going to get six new characters in 2016.

Mii Costumes will continue to get made as well but stages are nearing their end. They either are ending it at Midgar (since it really seems like the DLC stage with the most work put into it acting as sort of a "finality" to it) or there will be one more stage to come out in 2016 (or at the end of the presentation) with the ballot winner since every DLC newcomer so far has come with a stage as well (assuming the ballot winner is a newcomer, which it almost surely would be). We'll see on this, I guess, considering the extra stage slot found from datamining.

-Sakurai will thank everyone for their support and talk about how much working on Smash 4 for so long has taken a toll on him but that he does it for the fans. They may end the presentation with one final surprise of some kind that is either DLC or some other piece just as exciting.

As I said, the order gets a little hairy after they cover Cloud, Midgar, and the Chocobo Mii Costume. It could go in any order from there, really. Those are just my predictions.

As an side, Ice Climbers are definitely a pie in the sky request and are not reasonable to expect at all so I'm not sure why a few of you are thinking they're likely as DLC. ICs' situation hasn't changed at all, the 3DS is incapable of running four Ice Climbers on-screen therefore we cannot get them. And Sakurai is not going to ruin the character by making Popo or Nana playable on their own. That won't be profitable for them at all and solo Ice Climber is really terrible -- it would bring nothing exciting and personally, would be an extreme waste of being DLC. DLC should add something valuable and solo Ice Climber is not valuable at all. No one wants solo Ice Climber, they want the pair Ice Climbers and they're not happening. It's not a safe prediction. :V

I'm banking on a nice hefty surprise for this finale.

- Ice Climber(s)
- Wolf
- Snake
- Chorus Kids
- Inkling
- Cloud

Three vets and three newcomers. Maybe three in December and three later on. Or perhaps just all six at once.

I know it seems like a lot but I really don't want to give up hope for any of those characters. That would be an utterly complete Smash roster for me.

Also the Ice Climbers rant directly above is ridiculous imo.

I'm guessing Mii costumes will be:

Chocobo, White Mage, Black Mage, Moogle.
Crono, Magus
Geno
Slime, DQ Hero themed costumes

What characters do you think they are then?

-Cloud

-Nintendo Newcomer (Inkling, K. Rool or Paper Mario)

I'm not entirely sure. I'm thinking Cloud, Wolf, and probably a new character. I have a hard time seeing Snake coming back, and he's the only other veteran that Sakurai would dredge up outside of Ice Climbers and they just flat out aren't happening, sadly.

But I still struggle to think of a worthwhile newcomer that they could add at this point, third party or first. Inkling is just about the only first party newcomer I can see being added at this stage, but I'm not super sure of a second new stage in this final update at all, and I don't see them including Inkling without a Splatoon stage.

I really don't know. Sakurai will surprise us.

Even tho there's definitely a way to make Ice Climbers work (like totally re do their moveset) so Nana plays in a similar fashion to Luma/Duck [at least for this game] I think it's way too late to introduce them again to the franchise after all the backlash their omission because of the 3DS caused.

If they bring them back then that's great but honestly I don't think they'll bother

Also the Ice Climbers rant directly above is ridiculous imo.

Explain how it is ridiculous. Solo Ice Climber brings nothing interesting to the table as a DLC character and if they're brought back at all they should be brought back as how they were before: not solo. And since they can't, the likelihood of them being DLC at all is very, very low.

Yes, I am aware we just had Cloud happen and that there are (a very small minority) of people who would be happy with a solo Ice Climber and probably buy it. But I feel that would just not do the character justice at all and thus would be a waste of whatever resources they used to make it happen vs bringing back a character that is solo already or can work solo or a new solo character that brings something new to the table than a solo Climber.

Plus, I think it's too late for them anyway in general. If they were going to be reworked for this game, they would have prioritized reworking them for the base game but they didn't and people simply have to let go of them this time around.

Linkle would be rad, but I'd DIE of Volga got added. Fucking love that guy, and a lance wielder would be such a cool addition to smash

I think we get 3 more characters in addition to Cloud. Wolf will probably be one. The other two? Who knows. I'm guessing Cloud will be available after said Spectacular, and Wolf around April when SF0 comes out.

I'm expecting at least one more mode, a few dozen more Mii costumes and 3-5 more stages. They must have a reserve of content ready to go right now.

The more I think about it, the more I think the Inklings won't make it this time. It just seems...I dunno, like DLC is for 3rd parties and veterans not in the game right now.

I dunno how many characters we'll get after Cloud (though not many I think, 2 or 3), but since people are listing their hopes and dreams, I'd personally be super happy if we either got Wolf or Snake (or both, that'd be crazy) back. Wolf was my Brawl main alongside MK and Ike, and while I didn't care that much for Snake in Brawl since I didn't play MGS, I care for him quite a bit now since I now have played his series. Either one of these would make me happy.
For a less likely, hail mary pipedreamy kinda wish I'd love for some sort of Atlus rep to be added to Smash. I know Atlus' characters don't have nearly as much clout as Cloud or the other 3rd parties already in Smash, but still the company and its franchises have a lot of history and also a very good relationship with Nintendo. Voted for Jack Frost in the ballot, but I'd also be fine if they pulled a Cloud and went with their most poupular characters instead (i.e. Yu Narukami).

Either way I'm really excited for the December presentation. Cloud's reveal blew me away and got me hyped as fuck for Smash again.

They will release a Wolf Link amiibo, so Wolf Link / Midna might be in.
I really wanted someone else from Punch-Out or F-Zero, and more character from the NES era, Arthur, from Ghost and Goblins would be pretty cool.

I'm guessing Mii costumes will be:

Chocobo, White Mage, Black Mage, Moogle.
Crono, Magus
Geno
Slime, DQ Hero themed costumes
Don't the Mii costumes all vaguely resemble one of the 3 Mii fighting styles? I don't think we've had any "mage" costumes yet, and for good reason.

Cloud + Midgar
Snake + Shadow Moses Island
Wolf

That coincides with the three character slots and two stage slots found in the most recent patch.

Cue Snake's trailer.

It would make so much sense for the final third party character in Smash 4 to be the very first third party character in the series.

GameXplain thinks that the Limit Break charge works like Mac's KO punch, but I've been assuming it's one of his specials. Now I'm confused as to what Cloud's 4th special is, if not that.

Viridi is technically a mage, and she was made into a Mii Swordfighter costume.
Ah, I am corrected - thank you.

It looks like Cloud's down special is Limit Charge, and it becomes Finishing Touch once the meter is full.

Standard - Blade Beam (enhanced with full Limit gauge)
Side - Cross-slash (enhanced with full Limit gauge)
Up - Climhazzard (enhanced with full Limit gauge)
Down - Limit Charge (becomes Finishing Touch with full Limit gauge)

Finishing Touch becoming available with a full Limit gauge reflects its status as a Level 3 move in FFVII, whereas his other specials are only Level 1-2 moves. The Level 4 Omnislash is a Final Smash, of course.

Are we predactin'?

Cloud (becomes available in December)
Inkling (early 2016)
Wolf (early 2016, around Star Fox)

I'm unsure on Inkling though...tbh.
Cloud disqualifies Sora (my opinion of course).
Goku is possible but still unlikely.
I extremely doubt Snake comes back
Paper Mario gets no love and I don't see that changing

So I guess I'm going with Inkling tentatively.

Don't see why Wolf wouldn't be coming out with Cloud seeing as StarFox's original release date was this year.

It's a shame we don't seem to have Meteorain in his moveset. Although translating it to Smash could have been an issue. That and where would you put it input wise?

Honestly, I wouldn't want Snake back because we know he won't be voiced by David Hayter. :C

They could just re-use voice clips from Brawl. Honestly, if Snake is brought back outside of some tweaking with his specials and moveset (to mirror MGS3, Peace Walker and Ground Zeroes/Phantom Pain), he would largely be the same compared to his Brawl counterpart.

Don't see Snake getting a new stage but that stage getting more music (from recent games like Peace Walker, Ground Zeroes, Phantom Pain, Metal Gear Rising) and maybe costumes from latter games (MGS3, MGS Phantom Pain).

Meteor rain could still be a possibility. We havent seen all of cloud's enhanced attacks when using limit break,

honest question, was it confirmed that Cloud isn't the ballot winner? I may have missed that

Sakurai stated in a tweet that he hopes people are happy that he completed a request to the fans after Cloud was announced, so it might be possible that Cloud was one of the ballot fighters.

Still, that leaves room for a Nintendo Poll Winner and maybe another third party poll character (Snake or some from Bamco/Square/Sega).

Would they really re-use voice clips from Brawl though? Have they done that with other characters?

I wouldn't expect any changes to his moveset even if it was a different version of snake. Although, I would be curious as to which Snake they'd end up using or combining.

That wouldn't make any sense. They struggled with the Union. Who said that they wouldn't do it again?

Who says they would?

I feel like he'd say if he was. Has his next Famitsu column been released yet?
If anything, maybe they're doing it by region and Cloud won in Japan or something.

A lot of characters had voice clips re-used from Brawl. Only ones who didn't are ones who got new voice actors I believe.

I can see that. But we didn't see Finishing Touch, right?

Finishing Touch is the tornado spin attack he does during the "Limit" section.

https://youtu.be/6v_MdaIHOtk?t=112

Toned down a bit obviously since it was a large tornado in FFVII.

Actually that would make no sense. Fortunately, no sense happens to be Konami's specialty.

Its more ironic then something that would make sense but I agree; its not something many of us expected to happen. But with Cloud coming to Smash, that makes Snake coming back all the more likely......if Konami wasn't present-day Konami.

But 2015 happened and Konami is odd now with making very odd moves. They still have a good relationship with Nintendo (they let them put a few Castlevanna GBA games on the Wii U E-Shop for example plus they let Nintendo handle a Huston Soft IP for the 3DS in Japan...forgot its name though), so its likely they would work something out with Snake appearing in Smash 4.

The only sign that I feel it might happen is that Snake wouldn't take a lot of work to bring back; he could be brought back just like how Mewtwo, Roy and Lucas was brought into Smash 4. Same core movesets with some slightly different animations and their attacks being a bit different.

Plus his voice clips form Brawl could be re-used, they could use tracks from Brawl and newer games, and they could bring back the MGS Stage from Brawl instead of making a new one (like they did for Mega Man, Pac-Man, Ryu and Cloud in both versions & making Windy Hill for Sonic in the Wii U version); not as time consuming as Cloud and Ryu likely took.

and they could bring back the MGS Stage from Brawl instead of making a new one

Eh... not really sure they can. I'm hesitant on whether the stage can work on the 3DS, as it's fairly graphically intense, and there's always the codec calls to worry about. Would Sakurai cut them out the stage? Who knows. He's never cut codec easter egg things before, all these years later and Corneria is still rocking the original easter eggs.

Most of the veterans from Brawl are just reusing their Brawl voice clips. The only ones that aren't are Kirby, Fox, Falco, Lucario, Ness, Pit, and Sonic.

And Charizard. And Bowser, I guess, but that's not really a voice.

I wouldn't expect any changes to his moveset even if it was a different version of snake. Although, I would be curious as to which Snake they'd end up using or combining.

Most of the Mario Cast is using clips from Brawl and Jigglypuff is using VO from far back as Melee (plus between the Wii U and 3DS versions, the Star Fox crew is using VA from Melee (3DS Cornara), Brawl (returning stage) and the VA's from Star Fox 64 3D in Orbital Assault (Wii U). The series is known for reusing voices and Snake wouldn't be an exception.

I could see them using the MGS3 or Phantom Pain version, but I assume that the MGS version of Snake would be it (with another version being a costume, like how Cloud got his FFVII and Advent Children looks).

Maybe they cut that content and make edits to the stage in the 3DS version:
-Remove the breakable walls
-Lower the frame rate of the Metal Gear(s) in the background
-Dial down the snow effects
-Remove the codec conversations; but those are kept in the Wii U version

They did that with other Brawl stages (Green Hill Zone having Tails/Knuckles/Silver running at 30FPS) and even aspects of fighter character (the Pikmin in the 3DS version run at a very low frame rate...15FPS or less).

So, they could do the stage in the 3DS version.
