Super Smash Bros. "Special Broadcast" coming December 2015

No, they haven't confirmed or deconfirmed it.

I feel that they would have announced that during his announcement. But you are correct; they didn't comment on that matter prior nor after his announcement.

I think he isn't part of the poll winners but I wouldn't be surprised if he is one of them.

Most of the veterans from Brawl are just reusing their Brawl voice clips. The only ones that aren't are Kirby, Fox, Falco, Lucario, Ness, Pit, and Sonic.

A lot of characters had voice clips re-used from Brawl. Only ones who didn't are ones who got new voice actors I believe.

Yes, with Ike and Lucas as two examples of entirely re-used voice clips from Brawl. But there are more than those two.

Most of the Mario Cast is using clips from Brawl and Jigglypuff is using VO from far back as Melee (plus between the Wii U and 3DS versions, the Star Fox crew is using VA from Melee (3DS Cornara), Brawl (returning stage) and the VA's from Star Fox 64 3D in Orbital Assault (Wii U). The series is known for reusing voices and Snake wouldn't be an exception.

Thank you all for that knowledge.

I could see them using the MGS3 or Phantom Pain version, but I assume that the MGS version of Snake would be it (with another version being a costume, like how Cloud got his FFVII and Advent Children looks).

I think that would be one of the best thing to happen, if we could get another costume for Snake if he were to join up again in Smash Bros. I honestly wonder how Venom Snake would look in Smash, considering how serious that design is. lol. Shirtless Naked Snake would be my want.

Unless Japan pushed hard for him then I really doubt he was in the upper echelon of poll characters. There was very little discussion of him during the Smash ballot.

I meant, you acting like that it's 100% confirmed.

We don't know that for sure. That's why I suggest a probable that it might happens or not.

I'm not, but I knew you would be getting on me like you always do. lol

It's all assumption, especially with the way Konami has been and changing voice actors. They get the say on that matter.

I guess it was just a friendly deal between Nintendo and Square; both got something out of it with Nintendo likely getting future FF titles on NX and 3DS plus having a huge icon in Smash, Square got great advertising for the FF brand alongside having a push for FFVII Remake, which itself might come to NX at some point.

Uhh, nice saving, I guess? We don't really want any confusion here because we can't just stats the opinions/assumptions as if they were the facts because other members could be misguided. That's why I want to clear up the air before people misunderstood your post.

They could use MGS Phantom Pain/Ground Zeroes voice clips, so it is possible but I don't expect that honestly.

If Snake comes back, I feel that he will get some work done on him (extra costume from MGS3/Phantom Pain, slight edits to his moveset, adding music to his MGS 1 Stage from Brawl, ect) but it will largely be carry over content form Brawl.

For example, Sonic is a returning third party character but he got no new remixes and the 3DS version didn't get Windy Hill Zone (only Green Hill from Brawl) but Sonic got some reworking to his moveset and got stronger compared to Brawl.

Something like Sonic's deal might happen with Snake if he comes back (new VA but recycled voice clips from other games, re-using Brawl stage, same core moveset but changes to make him stronger/better).

honestly, how much could it cost to get Kiefer Sutherland to record a couple of victory lines, a few trailer lines and some grunts?

You're right on that. I just think its rather surprising since I saw barely any talk about him, though this may just be the silent majority at work.

Its likely because Cloud wasn't expected at all to have a chance for Smash Bros. He is mainly known for his link to PlayStation, FFVII never landed on Nintendo consoles and none of the expanded-world FFVII stuff came to Nintendo (Crisis Core FFVII was PSP only for example); he is a PS Character through and through.

But Cloud is one of the faces of FF and a popular one; even if he isn't a Nintendo character, similar to Snake (though he did appear on Nintendo through GBC, NES and GameCube), he is a gaming icon and that is enough to become part of Smash.

Pricey enough for Konami; they likely don't want to spend a lot if Snake comes back. If anything, Nintendo will cover the fees for everything if Snake got new VA work and the like.

Speak of Kiefer Sutherland, what is people's opinions about his voice acting in MGS:PP?

Really isn't much of a consensus. Some people didn't care for it. Others thought he did a good job in some scenes. Most agree he should've said more since he was basically silent.

Considering how many lines from that game get made fun of, I'd say Kiefer did a good job because his character's lines weren't really made fun of too much.

What would be the legal problems with reusing Brawl's clips?

Normally it wouldn't be permitted in the employment contract, otherwise the employer - especially one that has a bunch of characters that just make grunts and offer the occaisional catchphrase - would use the one recording forever.

I really dont understand the thought process that Banjo & Kazooie would be Duck Hunt clones, none of Duck Hunt's moves really make sense for Banjo. Maybe I can see the clay pigeons working as eggs, but the barrel? The Gunmen? Just doesn't work.

Some people I don't know... I remember when Bowser Jr leaked we saw his Up B, I couldn't believe how many people were upset because they immediately assumed he was Diddy clone. I mean really? REALLY?! Some people are just have bad wiring in their brain.

He's been fairly direct in the past about the toll developing games take on him, and in Iwata Asks for Brawl he alluded a number of times to creating the game as if it would be the final one.

It is silly to think he'd do something like that, and it's only a hunch he would, but I can't put that possibility past him either. The insane roster for the Wii U/3DS mostly gives off vibes that it is a "grand finale" of sorts -- how they'd manage to match that, let alone top it, makes my mind sweat.

I feel the same way. This is like the swan song of Smash under Sakurai's rule. I would not be surprised if he announces his retirement from the series. Either that or he'll announce that his brain will be preserved in a T-2000 or something.

Another good example would be how most people (myself included) only thought Bowser Jr. could be a Bowser clone with some paintbrush moves.

Never would I have guessed he'd be in a clown car. Brilliant.

I figured giving Bowser Jr. Squirtle's old moveset and replacing the water effects with paintbrush effects would be the best way to go. I did say I'd only be cool with Bowser Jr. if he came with Koopaling alts, something I didn't honestly expect to happen when I said so.

The Clown Car is infinitely more fun.

I hope Sakurai instead of being a director could step up within the company and oversee a couple projects at a time. Have directors and teams in place while Sakurai gives guidance and ideas to these projects but a less hands on approach. However I don't know if he could do that given his personality. He could just further run himself into the ground.

They probably used it because Brawl's FD theme is godly. Doubt it means anything.

They could have also used it just because Uematsu composed it and he composed FF7 as well.

I'm pretty pumped to have more Uematsu music in the game actually.

If you want to look into it, Brawl Vets like Wolf and/or Snake. But it could equally mean absolutely nothing.

I doubt it means nothing. The trailer was very detail-oriented so I don't think Brawl music was just randomly thrown in. It's interesting that the Brawl theme was composed by Nobuo Uematsu who also composed many FFs including FFVII.

Yeah, but realize it's only a bit over a month that the polls were officially closed. They would have to handle copyright, conceptualize, and develop the character, the stage, the costumes, and the reveal in a month. I doubt he's a ballot winner, if anything this was already in the works months before.

I doubt that's Finishing Touch though, since it looks like a typical up smash.

It looks pretty similar though.

It wouldn't be unlikely that most of the votes were done in the first month or so, and so they had an idea of who to use by them. Or if votes were steadily "evergreen" that Cloud and some others were consistently on top getting votes.

The ballot wasn't a poll, it was a suggestion box. Being the top of the ballot is pretty much meaningless.

We say this but truthly we really don't know and depending upon how the info is presented to us persumably next month we may never know.

Well considering Konami barely fucking used him in MGSV despte paying $$& to use him quiet a lot I imagine

Unless Japan pushed hard for him then I really doubt he was in the upper echelon of poll characters. There was very little discussion of him during the Smash ballot.

The Smash ballot discussion was usually made by Nintendo fans, the same that thought that Sakurai had rules and that Cloud couldn't be in. Most of the people who participated in the ballot was never exposed to these discussions or fan surveys.
To the general public, Cloud is way way more popular than Dixie Kong, Bayonetta, Shovel Knight or K.Rool (the surveys common winners unless i'm mistaken).

Thanks everyone for the clarification that we don't know for sure yet if Cloud won the ballot. I would be really surprised if any of those other characters had beaten Cloud in the ballot for popularity reasons alone.

Yeah it really depends upon how many casuals who don't post on the neogafs and the gamefaqs and the smashboards voted for Cloud or other characters they loved without any knowledge of who owns what characters. Its why I always say you can't take polls from smash enthusiast as a good barometer on what characters are popular with the masses. Of course its also impossible to say how the ballot voting played out in terms of casual voters vs hard core smash fan voters. Its impossible to speculate until Nintendo/Sakurai address the ballot directly if they ever do.

Honestly I wouldn't be so sure of that. Where is the sort of person that doesn't watch Nintendo Directs supposed to learn about ballot from? Communities. I really doubt that there are that many people that visited the official site but do not participate in any internet community exposed to these discussions.

Regardless, I don't see what's so special about Cloud - he's been in spin-offs on Nintendo hardware, he's been technically eligible under "old rules" too.

This is just a personal anecdote, but I know two people in real life who voted in the ballot and aren't a member of any online community. Given the ratio of Smash Bros. forum posters to copies sold of the game, I doubt my situation is unique. I'm not saying every single person who has played Smash Bros. voted in the ballot, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were two or three "casual" votes for every GAF/Reddit/Smashboards/etc. vote.

With Cloud blowing the lid off, we all know that the next two characters are going to be Batman and Darth Vader.

Sarcasm aside, I dare you to create a compelling reason as to why that wouldn't be awesome. "Integrity" of Smash be damned.

And if we get one, I think it would likely be Sora (unless we count him as a Disney character) instead of Chrono.

It's not a matter of "counting" him as a Disney character, they'd need Disney's approval in order to add Sora to the game.

I have about 11 friends voting for Smash Ballots, and they are not part of any online community. I just knew that casual players (aka silent voters) are going to be stronger than our online community votes.

I only said that because I don't know if Sora is a Square Enix or Disney character. So it seems like he is a Disney character then. I wonder if Disney would allow him to be in Smash. I don't see why they wouldn't.
