i'm hoping it's not too expensive.

This is too expensive. :)

To be fair this is not a remaster. This is more like a remake, no? Looks stunning. Wow with those min specs.
Yeah, you are right.

After two decades, Nightdive Studios is rebooting and re-imagining the original System Shock. We will keep the new game true to the classic experience, keeping all the things you loved while giving today's gamers the modern look and feel expected from a great game.

This looks amazing

But on the flipside, those corridors seem very boxy and kind of same-y. How varied were the areas in the original game? Never played it

It is pretty much the same from start to finish. 2 started to mix it up more.

Fortunately this was from the era of actual level/map design, so everything still feels fresh. It actually adds to the atmosphere in some ways, because you are never sure what is coming ahead and those ninja fuckers could be anywhere (you'll know what I mean when the hit you in the back)

The other plus is you know this isn't just a demo of 1% of the game and the kickstarter will go nowhere. Other than adding some more enemies, they are pretty much there.

Looks pretty good, and the movement and headbobbing kinda give off a similar feel to the sophisticated (and sometimes clumsy) movement physics from the original, although I'm sure they won't bother with leaning on walls and stuff like that, which is more than fine.

The interactive panels (rewiring, keypad) are straight in the game world this time, that's a pretty nice detail, although I'm not sure how finicky and frustrating it'll feel if you're pressed with time or under attack and need to hack that door quickly, but it's now a part of the physical world of the game and I like that in any case.

Not really feeling the music unfortunately (although we've really only heard a tiny fraction, who knows how it all sounds later on). I can understand that they're going for a horror atmosphere, more ambient and probably less frequent full blown pieces during important moments (like the windows looking at Saturn) or intense action sequences, but it doesn't have to be like that, IMO. The original System Shock was one of the very early examples of implementing dynamic music, having various loops on different channels of varying intensity, so the game would gradually (or instantly) change depending on the situation. Even transitioning between different areas would gradually silence out most of the channels of the first song, with only part of the theme or a beat still going while the theme from the new area would start to play (sometimes with mixed results, but it was still a very cool thing), so you'd never really have the same exact music playing, it would feel a bit more like a living thing. But there was almost always some music playing.

Also, having constant (or almost constant) background music during gameplay is something that's a part of video game design and is valid in its own right, so it shouldn't always be dismissed as an artifact of the past, or that it's only fitting for more arcadey, oldschool indie games these days. I would like to see an SS1 remake with more constant electronic music in there, not necessarily modern synthwave, but more like the electronic-alt-rock-new-wave mix the original had, or just straight up cyberpynk-anthem-Depeche-Mode sounding stuff. The musical backdrop is an essential part of the cyberpunk setting and should be treated as such. I would not even mind something like Faunts - M4 (Mass Effect 1 credits song) which basically sounds like it's straight from SS1.

Stuff like this or even this could work nicely, adapted to a dynamic, modular music system like SS1's. But I've gone deep into fanboy rant territory, so enough of that.

I'm very happy there's a whole System Shock revival finally happening, so all of this looks just fine and dandy to me. :)

Is the new System Shock project by Warren Spector and OtherSide Entertainment a different game to this one?

Sorry for the stupid question, but I'm confused.

Eveyone play this in the background when watching polygon gameplay as there is no proper music.

Yes, they're remaking the first one and making a sequel with Warren Spector.

No demo for Xbox One today?

So X1 backers don't get to try what they're backing but PC backers do? Seems unfair.

You can just drop something on PC with no certification, putting something on console requires a certification plus license and such. Also generally it wouldn't be optimized for multiple platforms at this phase.

when is the full game expected?

If they're having a kickstarter to 'raise funds for development' that suggests the game is far out. But then any demo would almost be just a tech demo.

If the demo is a properly playable slice of the game that could suggest development is quite far along. In which case why bother with a kickstarter?

Confused. Will probably back anyway

Plenty of games and tech products do this. It helps speed development and acquire venture capital.

I'm playing the Enhanced System Shock. Was only 2.50 on Steam. Graphics are mind blowing for a game it's age. Looks out of this world in fullscreen. The remake will be better now that it will control a bit more like Bioshock.

It was looking so finished I was hoping it was a 2016 game, but I'm still 100% on board. Bring on the KickStarter!

I'd guess that they've focusing on a particular area of the game so they can polish it to a sheen and thus offer a solid example of what to expect.

A vertical slice is what they call it in the game industry.
It looks a lot like the actual beginning area of System Shock 1, so it could be that area is basically an early part of the final game. Vertical slice implies that you get something that touches on all important bits, but might not appear in the final game in that sort.

A vertical slice is what they call it in the game industry.

I'm hesitant to call it a vertical slice as there are cases of vertical slices being far too ambitious for consoles (Dark Souls 2 and The Witcher 3 instantly come to mind) and I'd like to think Night Dive/Otherside wouldn't ask people to pledge money to a vision of System Shock that they can't actually reasonably guarantee (the X1 version will take some hits, no doubt, given Unity is a somewhat demanding engine), especially with a playable demo being widely available from the off. I mean, I know that's technically what the demo is, but the term has become a little tainted in recent years due to overpromises, unintended or otherwise.

Feeling nostalgic and want to replay the original version, but with mouse controls since I doubt playing without those will be fun nowadays.

Haven't really played it since the 90s, and it was one of my first PC game, along with Wing Commander 3 and Bioforge(had some box including all 3 Origin games).

Anyone got a link to share for that? Hopefully the mouse controls are well implemented.

How are the mouse controls? Do they feel like most modern games? I remember playing some version a few years ago with mouse controls, was probably fanmade or something, but it wasn't intuitive at all(think I had to stop moving the first person camera in order to pick up items with the mouse? I couldn't simply look right at them and pick them up with a button) and I never left the first room with the robots lol.

Very smart to launch a demo along with the Kickstarter. This looks promising so far.
QFT. Kickstarters that launch with nothing but concept art seem to have a way of disappointing their fans (sometimes even when they come out decent, just because they don't fit with expectations). When they launch with a solid demo, they seldom disappoint. It goes a long way.

I will be playing this and likely backing it. It's a game that stands to gain a lot from a modernized interface, and holds up really well otherwise.

Yeah, I suspect this will be the polar opposite of John Romero's kickstarter from a couple months back. They're coming prepared.

The only exception I've made was for Battletech, and only because Harebrained has a proven track record with delivering with Kickstarters and for translating their concept art to gameplay pretty well
