it's funny, though FUSION doesn't have as nonlinear a structure as some other metroids, it does have probably the second best villain in the series' history. apart from ridley, the sa-x is the epitome of "oh fuck" villainy.
Completely agree...SA-X saved that game for me. It was way too easy, held my hand too often, and mostly felt like I was being shoved down a path as opposed to really digging and feeling out one. Still a damn good 2d game, but a big "disappointment" for me as far as metroid goes.

Hmm 2.5d :\

I'm worried if it will affect platforming \ exploring \ puzzle aspects of metroid, if indeed that is still part of the game.
It shouldnt from the looks of the trailer. It all seems like a perfect side scrolling 2d plane of action(most sections) as opposed to having depth of movement through the background in a 2d viewpoint. Its not camera isnt angled at all either, which could be an issue for precision platforming. It really does look like...ummm...sf4. Strictly 2d(aside from the obvious parts) with 3d assets.....but im not sure how shooting in the background works. Maybe you aim with the wiimote and can hit anything on the screen, regardless of depth. Maybe some viewtiful joe style machspeed background interaction is in place that directly effects whats on your 2d playfield...like shooting a switch in the background to open a corridor directly in front of you.

Avater get ! Thank you so much.
Just thought about something....was the last shot, the one where the camera view flies into the arm cannon, the hyper beam?

EDIT: This game better have a glitch to use the murder beam from super metroid.

I dont know if metroid will be good in the hands of team ninja, because metroid is a very slow space/adventure game. Maybe it will the biggest surprise of the century or maybe we will have another starfox assault on our hands.

I know that people thought that metroid prime was a big joke before it was announced (wtf metroid in fps mode), yet it is one of the biggest masterpieces of all the videogames.

So lets see if team ninja can do it (too bad it will be without itagaki).

Looks epic. Can't wait! Finally a 2.5D/3rd person Metroid game! It's the Metroid game I have been dreaming of since the Super Metroid days. I'm so glad Retro isn't working on this. They totally ruined the series. Team Ninja helping to bring the franchise back to its glory. The haters in this thread can suck it seriously.

again: team ninja PLUS nintendo.

and as others have said over and over, who'd have thought retro would make games as excellent as the three primes prior to their release? they were nobodies who'd done nothing. don't underestimate the power of the nintendo collaboration.

hehe (sry if posted already)

That pretty much sums up Nintendo fans ;p

They should have added another panel saying Nintendo win/best conference ever etc.

Metroid + Team Ninja is like a horse and a cat.. fucking.

I'm having trouble comprehending it.

I'm still kind of in shock actually, even though we've known for nearly a whole day now.

When I saw Samus I made some squealing like noise. I don't know what the hell is was but it was the biggest (and best) surprise I've had in a long time. It came out of nowhere. I thought Metroid was going to be dead for a while.

I thought it was a solid representation of most people on this forum, rather than just nintendo fans, in that, most people are saying metroid was the only thing that saved the conference from being a failure

How many people left team ninja with that leather jacket guy >.<?

According to an interview Itagaki did with 1up recently, a few of the lead producers iirc.
Might want to look that up if you want to be sure.

Those of you itching to play Super again from the trailer/celebration of a new game in the Metroid universe, join me on Thursday, I think I'll be playing it that day.

I'm there. It's been several years and I'm due for a run anyhow.

absolutely nailed my reaction to the entire conference.

i peed my pants just a little.

Are you really picky about genres or something? No interest in Dead Space, Sin & Punishment, etc?

Or are we talking about what was shown at the actual conference (and not in the booths).

I'm not berating you or anything btw. I'm just curious. This year and next year look really great on the Wii to me, but I still see quite a few people saying there are "no games" and things like that, which seem kinda silly to me.
oh yeah, i make no apologies or excuses for my pickyness. when it comes to nintendo, all i want is zelda, metroid, and maybe a little mario. narrow minded? sure.

dead space, sin and punishment, red steel, etc. are good in their own right for others, i completely understand. but they do nothing for me.

Also, now that I think about it, the bits that have an obvious point in the timeline are pretty clearly cutscenes. So maybe it actually takes place between Super and Fusion (seeing as how she lacks the Fusion suit, but we see the Mother Brain fight), and just uses cutscenes to elaborate on her back story.
Exactly what I'm thinking.

Can't wait to see how they use the upgrades for melee combat. Imagine grabbing a beastie with the grapple beam, throwing it in the air and slicing through it with the screw attack.

Yeah, this is what I am thinking as well.

I'm half-hoping that the plot deals with revenge in some way, though. A Team Ninja game- with visceral, bloody combat- would be a perfect follow-up to the murder of Samus' parents or something.

could we not stray into the realm of awful fanfic please?

thanks. ;)

My prediction for this game then, awesome action, great fighting, shitty storyline, and a glimpse of Samus tits if we complete it in under 3 hours.

Disagree. Been playing Metroid since the first one, and I honestly feel that both this AND the Prime series feel like Metroid. I think the only game in the series that doesn't feel like Metroid is Fusion, and only because it was so bland and linear.
Yes.

in one of the cutscene snippets, it shows what looks like a young samus face (very young) rapidly becoming older until finally transitioning into having a helmet over it.. my feeling is that the story will start with an intro of her childhood, and then use a transition like that to bring us forward to the 'present day' of the game

first day, first in line

That was my take the first time I played Fusion too, but each time I've gone back it's struck me as slight deviation in concept and still "Metroid" (and spectacular quality at that). I was a lot more thrown by the linearity the first time out. Going back it felt a lot more natural. Corruption was just as jarring on first visit (and I loved that too).

Between Super, Fusion, Zero, and Prime I-III, there's not a game that feels "un-Metroid" to me and actually the series has one of the strongest pedigrees there is IMO. If I had to choose a black sheep, it would be Echoes, but I won't say that for certain until I play it in the Trilogy.

Also: in for a SMet replay Thursday.

Well, I've slept on it, watched the videos again, looked at the screens and animated gifs.

I'm still sold on this. My only potential issue is how action heavy it is. Is it a Metroid in play style, or is it a more action orented shooter?

I'm fine with either direction, but I do love a good adventure title.

oh and as for the fusion bagging out.... shame on you. awesome addition to the series.

there really is no blemish on the core metroid franchise (hunters was ok... pinball doesn't count).

Yeah, there really aren't any bad Metroid games.

However, I still think Fusion is bottom tier. Played through it again recently, and just didn't like the hand-holding at all. The music didn't really do it for me either. I will agree that the SA-X is a great villain, though.

And if you want to know what "top tier" is for me, in terms of Metroid, it's more along the lines of Super Metroid, Zero Mission, Metroid Prime, and even Prime 2.

Soooo...I have a question. From the trailer, I get a mix of who the real Samus Aran is. Is it the shorted haired woman or the long haired we see towards the end? There are tons of "flash back" moments obviously in the trailer. But at the end, I get a conflicting issue of which one is Samus. You think we're gonna get the "MGS2" treatment with this?
