will this be ok?
Thank You!

Nintendo has to have some faith in Team Ninja to let them develop one of their core franchises even if Itagaki etc left. Nintendo has generally been a good judge on skill of developers and when to use them and when to dump them on their ass

I'm completely onboard for everything this presents except......

Is anyone else not a fan of Samus' armor? Ultra-shiny, giant shoulders.....
Not a fan. Like the zero suit stuff though. Looks hot.

It looks like this game will take place during many different time periods and try to tie every game together. I wonder how they would incorporate the classic Metroid style of upgrading to reach new areas if you're just playing flashbacks though. I guess they could just keep the upgrades you get in each flashback exclusive to that time period. That is if they even have any of that stuff. This could totally be a Metroid May Cry with nothing but ass kicking and and cut-scenes.

Regardless, I think it looks awesome and I totally want to see the story unfold.

So, it's really a prequel somehow. That's good.

But it's not third-person. I'm fairly certain it's 2.5D.

Like, this part is clearly 2.5D (sorry for the shit quality):

Most of the enemies are on the same plane, and she rolls along that plane. But she's also shooting enemies in the background, which is interesting.

And even after she does a couple of those cinematic throws, the camera and her positioning return to a clearly 2D point of view:

2zny907.png

Which leads me to believe that these moves are simply context-sensitive actions, like certain actions in the God of War games. I think the first-person bits are like this as well.

It also seems like several of the boss fights in that video take place in round rooms, like the bosses in, say, Sonic Rush. Both the purple blob thing and Ridley appear to be in circular rooms.

But, you say, what about the parts where she's running into and away from the screen? Well, I'm pretty certain those parts only happen in specific rooms. If you notice, in both instances, there's a door directly behind or in front of her, which makes it seem like it's pretty much a straight line either way, so I figure it's still pretty much 2D gameplay and you can only move forward and backward, just with the camera positioned behind her. You can also see another one of these areas in the bit where she spins and slams the flying thing.

Awesome Theory. This might be exactly what the game will be about, kinda old-school 2d gameplay with 3d QTE/finishing moves. I love Neogaf for you guys figuring out things no one else sees :)

after watching the trailer 88 times, i found something. if you watch closely enough. Right at the beginning of the trailer when the action takes place i noticed
that this is going to be the best fucking game ever

Wow, I never noticed it before, but you're right.

Now I have to buy two copies of the game.

Team Ninja was one of my favorite developers, and Metroid is my favorite Nintendo IP. If this is done right it has the potential to be one of my favorite games this gen. However, it sounds like a lot of key people left Team Ninja to join Itagaki, so I'll just be cautiously optimistic for now.

Amazing trailer, amazing looking game, but what's with the name? I really hope "Other M" is a working title, as in "other metroid project"

So, like, not to try and stir up a hornets nest, but... are the Metroid fans actually excited by the series taking a seemingly more action orientated route like (from best I can tell DMC. Ninja Gaiden etc.) and moving away from it's slower paced explore-y-ness from the Prime series?

I find the seemingly overwhelming acceptance of this move a little unexpected.

Hmm

Been there, done that. And we don't even know for sure, if it's really gonna be Metroid Gaiden or if it's a 2 1/2D exploring shooter with fancy QTEs
So yeah, I'm pumped.

who cares as long as it is fun? this looks fun.

I sure like the look of the game, but I'm worried it's not gonna play like classic Metroid (ie. exploration first, action second).

Right now i'm taking a long break from gaming, but I have to say this is awesome news. I'm a VERY huge fan of what retro did with the series, in fact metroid prime 1 might be my all time favorite game, but it's definitely cool to see what a new developer will do with it and Ninja Gaiden was a great game. This looks pretty amazing to me.

No one said that they were taking out exploration but the combat looks very cool and flashy. Personally I hated the idea of making Metroid a 3rd person shooter because it's a terrible view choice for shooters especially one's with any sort of platforming. This will probably work a lot better because 3rd person camera is very good for more melee-based action, but I had never previously thought of taking the franchise and changing it to work that way. It's thinking outside the box, and I love that and felt that the initial Metroid Prime did the exact same thing of going in a bold new direction.

I'm enjoying the variety. It's the same reason I keep buying games with Mario in the title. Coming from Nintendo, I know it will more likely than not be extremely well made while providing a satisfying gaming experience. Metroid: Other M will feel fresh after years of (albeit excellent) Metroid Prime, so I'm looking forward to it.

I just noticed something with some kind of optic camouflage just behind Samus in the scene with that lizard....

thats awesome, is it possible to make an avatar size of that one? (perhaps from just before the camera goes into the arm cannon)

This is why I'm actually pretty hyped for it, there were a lot of things working against Prime for me (I know people flip their shit for it, I'm not one of them), and this will get me back on the Metroid train full steam. It's weird as I've been running through Super Metroid again on the Wii. That game is pretty much perfect.

this is the biggest gaming surprise I can remember in recent history, if ever. my brain and me actually had to discuss this for about 3 minutes just to determine it wasn't some kind of elaborate joke.

judging from the clips and the environments in them, it looks like a narrow path action game ala ninja gaiden... but I hope, at the least, there's some freedom and exploration in it, like the first ninja gaiden. (ND2 removed this great aspect altogether)

Well, it's a trailer. Samus wandering around, getting lost wouldn't make for nearly as interesting a trailer as Samus doing wrestling moves to aliens and shooting them in the face.

Read my earlier post in this thread on why I think it'll be a 2.5D game and still plenty Metroidy, and as you do, keep in mind that I am always right.

Always.

...Okay, maybe not always. But a considerable percentage of the time.

The only things that I'd worry about is that experiencing different points of the timeline might mean that there's not just one big open world to explore, and that there might be too much of an emphasis on cutscenes. Worst case scenario, we'll get another Fusion or Corruption.

Also, now that I think about it, the bits that have an obvious point in the timeline are pretty clearly cutscenes. So maybe it actually takes place between Super and Fusion (seeing as how she lacks the Fusion suit, but we see the Mother Brain fight), and just uses cutscenes to elaborate on her back story.

Maybe I'm just not recalling the Prime trailers correctly.

if this isn't about exploration, i'll be the first one to complain.

as things stand, it's an awesome trailer, it looks like they're taking some bold chances, and i like that it's from an unexpected team working directly with the o.g. makers of the series.

and oh yeah--fucking METROID. (<-- maybe some of you missed this part)

they definitely weren't as "actiony." i remember one that had movie guy's narration that emphasized the fact that you were "[stepping] behind the visor; inside the gravity suit" etc., sort of focusing on the immersion.

but that's been done, and this is something different.

Those of you itching to play Super again from the trailer/celebration of a new game in the Metroid universe, join me on Thursday, I think I'll be playing it that day.

KevinCow said:
Well, not that they're bad games. Just in terms of being more linear and less Metroidy.

it's funny, though FUSION doesn't have as nonlinear a structure as some other metroids, it does have probably the second best villain in the series' history. apart from ridley, the sa-x is the epitome of "oh fuck" villainy.

Hmm 2.5d :\

I'm worried if it will affect platforming \ exploring \ puzzle aspects of metroid, if indeed that is still part of the game.

And for that I'm grateful, I really didn't get along with Prime and its children at all :(
