Team Ninja & Nintendo - NEW METROID on Wii!

The new Metroid looks cooler than this:

Do you guys really think that if Team Ninja were straying far from what Nintendo wants from one of their established franchises that they wouldn't bitch slap them into place at the first opportunity? They did the same thing with Retro and every other dev they collaborated with, why would this be different?

Exactly if Nintendo is allowing Team Ninja to work on one of their Core Franchises it is because Nintendo feels confident they can get results and if they have to Miyamoto can overturn some tables

Am I the "Nintendo fan" you're talking about? :lol

I'm not a Nintendo apologist by a long shot, but I just find it amazing all the people that get mad at them for milking their old franchises as if that's something new. THAT'S WHAT THEY DO. They milk old franchises, and they have a major focus on a part of the market that are not GAFfers (Wii Fit, vitality monitor, etc.). Getting angry at them for that is like eating a spoonful of sugar and being pissed off that it's not sour.

Never really been a big Metroid fan (in that I haven't played many of the games, not that I dislike them), but for some reason I like hearing about new games in the series. Really interesting to see where the series goes imo.

it just seems like anytime someone says "gee whiz new ip's would be neato" it automatically = some sort of heresy.

and as far as them milking franchises, they DO trickle out new ones, but when there is obvious demand for something NEW and something HARDCORE, they give us something new that is irrelevant, and they give us something they're already whoring out, and slap the hardcore label on it.

sure, team ninja being on the case seems awesome, and it will probably be the first metroid i really enjoy, but why not just do this with all the core franchises, and like someone (you?) said, get the main nintendo omni-brain focused on new ideas and IP's. im the same way with metroid though, i keep trying them, keep sort of liking them, and im waiting for nintendo (or whoever helps them with core IP's) to do something that i can get into.

Never was interested in the Metroid series, after saying this, this looks really great.
but I'll have to wait and see, never thought Nintendo would let a 3rd party develop a Metroid game.

Why are you assuming this was a new franchise that they slapped metroid over?

Maybe....just maybe someone at Team Ninja likes this franchise

Since Team Ninja is involved I am assuming that this will be futhermucking HARD!

(this is a good thing)

Yeah, that older stuff looks pretty weak now in comparison.

I played all of them. The first Prime game was the best, but 3 was kinda meh. And it didnt look leaps and bounds better then the 1st one.

I am more excited for this game. Plus Nintendo is guiding them with the direction.

3 was pretty dang smooth though. This one looks more colourful and cartoony, which if done well could end up being good.

Dammit. I DON'T want a Japanese dev team making a Metroid game. The character design already looks like shit, there's already a ton of CGI and shitty anime melodrama and it's obviously tilted towards 3rd person action.

I'm digging the direction and the fact that it's a third person perspective Metroid game means that I might actually enjoy a 3D installment for once.

Indeed.
Is it wrong to be even slightly critical about a new Metroid game when the team behind it simply isn't any good at level design?

The problem, here, is just that you don't seem to understand Nintendo. There's been a rift amongst the fans formed over the last couple of years with some completely embracing Nintendo's attempts to expand the audience, and others resenting that they have begun to ignore their roots in favor of mediocre content aimed at casuals. Those in the latter group last year would have killed for a new installment of a beloved franchise.

I have no earthly idea of what the hell you want or expect. You didn't want new installments of their milked franchises -- the kind of game that "core" gamers have ALWAYS wanted from Nintendo, and you didn't want their exercise junk -- the kind of game that nets them money hand over fist with the casual crowd. What Nintendo have you been watching over the past 10 - 15 years that you thought this conference would be anything but a disappointment to you?

Looks way better than the Retro series of Metroid games from the trailer.

Thought I'd give my opinion to help level out the hate.

At first I thought this was my favourite E3 item so far. Then I thought about Team Ninja doing third-person platforming and combat involving exploding projectiles. Then I saw the screen with the purple lizard aliens. I don't know what to expect really. It definitely has the potential to be awesome though, if they avoid transferring some of the more abrasive elements of Ninja Gaiden.

Is this a joke? You do realize that Metroid is created by a japanese developer right? (R&D1, Nintendo)The legend himself Gunpei Yokoi.

i don't know where you got that point, but you should probably put it back and wash your hands. you don't know where it's been.

srsly, no clue where that came from.

LAMENS:
+i like this idea, and will try it
+i am upset that nintendo isn't exploring new IP's and franchises
+maybe N should let other companies help with their core IP's like this more so they can work on other stuff

No this is not a joke. And yes I know that. I'm one of the biggest, if not the biggest, Metroid fan here. And it's clear Retro captured the essence of the Metroid series with their Prime games while Nintendo completely missed the mark with the watered down Fusion and Zero Mission games. This already looks too action-oriented, too anime, too story-based to make for a great Metroid experience. On top of that Western devs just know Sci-Fi better than Japanese devs in my opinion. Mass Effect, Prime and Halo as great recent examples. This is too bad. Metroid was untarnished saved for the harmless handheld entries.

:lol you gotta be straight up kidding me.

people who complained about metroid prime being in first-person and whatnot were stupid. i never complained about that, because metroid wasn't about the perspective. it was about atmosphere and exploration and fun level design, which prime delivered in spades.

this on the other hand! :eek this is so far away from metroid that it's simply not metroid. BUT DUDE ITS GOT MOTHER BRAIN. seriously y'all, stop putting so much importance on crap like that, it only takes advantage of you and your nostalgia. this looks shitty. the graphics look like they came outta team ninja or something; complete lack of any artistic talent whatsoever, but it's shiny so who cares right. ninja gaiden was a great game, but it had some of the worst level design ever, and now the developers are taking on a series that's all about level design. it can't decide whether it wants to be 2d or 3d. samus is like kratos now. what the fuck is going on with this world. i'm all for change we can believe in, but this is ridiculous.

We get a mix of third-person, 2D and first-person. I wonder how and why the perspective changes.

it's probably scripted and linear like re4. i don't see how else it could work. it's disappointing, then, that metroid is now more of a thrill ride than an adventure.

BTW How odd is that?

No Retro+Nintendo developed Zelda.

but hey....

a Team Ninja+Nintendo developed Metroid.

WHO WOULDA' FUCKIN' THOUGHT, EH?

I'm the exact opposite. I havent liked Metroid since it became a western FPS.

I was with you up until you said that Zero Mission and Fusion were watered down in any sense of the word.

The trailer is well-executed and initially exciting. Then you see Samus wrestling a purple dinosaur. An ugly purple dinosaur. Samus is wrestling a dinosaur.

Honestly. How can people say these things with a straight face?
Sure they all go in slightly different directions but the intention is always the same.

You people are making me sick, ok?

We already had three Metroid Prime that are incredible. Not one; three! So, I think it's time to change. Why not? It looks gorgeous!

I wouldnt call them watered down, but it terms of exploration they were a bit lower: Fusion was linear, and zero mission had the chozo statue markers and was generally easier then the original.

That said, fusion was hard -you took like 3x the amount of damage you usally do in a metroid game.

Where does it say that? There's no fact sheet on the press site - only screens and the trailer.

I just saw thew video for the second time. It's fantastic. It reminds me what J.J. Abrams did with the Star Trek franchise: an amazing, deep prequel.

oh please, MZM is an amazing experience, and I guess you didnt include Hunters on purpose, which a western dev did.

This ... does not interest me. At all. I couldn't be more 'meh' about this.
I'll keep with the Trilogy, thanks. Glad others seem to like it though.

Congratulations, if you were never a joke character before you are now. That's a lot of presumptuousness per square inch.

STORY-DRIVEN METROOOOOOOIIIIIIIIIIIIDDDD

Metroid has one of the best universes ever. This game is a Megaton for me!

Guys, it's a trailer. Did you really think that Nintendo would rather show off exploration elements than action and story elements? C'mon now.

Most people weren't sold on Metroid Prime until they heard reviews or played the game itself. So, really, give it time.
