Tetsuya Takahashi's message on Xenoblade Chronicles 2

What a refreshing ethos to bring to game development. I'm honestly a lot more interested in this game after reading that statement.

Oh, the "just don't buy it and shut up" defense force.

And Elma's ED custom never got critized! Oh wait...
Since (main)character design is such a big part of the game, it's completely fair for people to voice their opinio/criticism. Especially when the creator say something like "leave the hot guy saving the world to someone else" and then have a animu hot girl (even more common and tiring trope) in his game.

I say this as a fan since Xenogears.

Or you can pick option B and complain about it in every single Xenoblade 2 thread while still buying the game and looking like a complete hypocrite. Subtract the title Xenoblade 2 and add Final Fantasy XV or any other title in all the various forms of media that pander to a male or female audience because there's enough of both.

Or you can be critical about the medias you're consuming, raising your opinion hoping that it will bring conscientization and change hopefully.

It's like the Assassin's Creed Unity business, the backlash they got for not bringing any female character model. I don't think that many people didn't bought the game because of this, but the fact that people were vocal about it certainly influenced Ubi politics.
I don't think that XC2 is anything unusual in japanese gaming, that doesn't mean we can't talk about it. The main issue are the people endorsing the design calling it "empowerment".

Oh cause if you like/buy a game you like have to like everrrrything in the game, no criticism allow! Either 10/10 goty or 0/10 straight boycut or you are a hypocrite!
Amirite?

Everyone who was againt the girl already stated their opinion, there is no need for them to repeat the same stuff everytime.

It got brought up again because its relate to Takahashi's comment in the op. It's not like this is a Xenoblade 2 music thread and people flood in to critized the character design.

As long as it doesn't get censored I'll get it.

At this point i would love it.
That girl chara design is really the thing i can't stand.... I remember having to pay a costume to play Final Fantasy XIII-2 because Serah had that absurd costume too...

Hope the story will still be good because it seems quite classical at this point.

Edit : Oh wait, six pages ? O-Ok then.

I don't mind criticism of design choice, but people are so judgemental. It seems many of you here take issue with how women are portrayed in Japanese culture--not just in video games.

Shocking, I know. Different culture has different values. I don't agree with it, of course. Like many here, I was raised in western society with western values, and I know how our views of women have been changing recently when compared with Japanese culture. But I'm not going to fault the character designers or call them names for portraying them as such. Why should I force my cultural values onto another? It's not my place, even though I may disagree with them.

This is why companies put in efforts to localize. Yet then there's another can of worms called censorship.
Because these are just a symptom of how women are viewed & treated overall in the Japanese society and should be criticized. Sexism isn't a victimless/problemless societal issue no matter what culture we're talking about. From my understanding Japan is still a very sexist society in a lot of regards and that reflects into a lot of things (like the all-encompassing, horrible waifu culture in Jpop, anime/manga and games). There's nothing wrong with calling this shit out & expecting better from international players like Nintendo.

Exactly this.

Would work if Xenoblade was treating women badly which it doesn't especially.
There are thousand of other games, japanese or western games that would be far better examples to use.

It's so bizarre hearing people talk about cultural acceptance and Japanese values, when Japanese values are very much at odds with how female characters are portrayed in their games.

What do you think highly sexualized characters look like in a very conservative society? Trashy. They cheapen the genre in their country of origin more than anywhere else.

I really hope a Mod set some ground rules down for future topics on this game.

Oh god yes please.

Not if every freaking thread about the game gets derailed with this shit. The faces of X were bad enough, we already know how this goes down. Make a thread about it where everyone can complain instead of shitting up every thread with "Xenoblade 2" in the thread title. "Oh wow the music sounds really nice BUT THE OUTFITS AND THE SEXISM!"

I'm not even calling you out specifically but everyone who feels entitled to derailing threads because he's in the right about something. Just stop that BS please.

Also being a fan of something doesn't excuse you from this. Zelda, FF and Metroid Fans are some of the worst fanbases out there specifically because they are so passionate about it and can't shut up about the things they don't like. Just saying.

You do realize that giving female video characters these sorts of clothings is exactly what constitutes treating women badly in this instance?

A mix between the two games would be perfect. I personally think X beats XB1 by a country mile, but there's no doubt that the first game had better story and characters. If they can bring this to the more open-ended exploration-style gameplay (and maybe a bit more structure) that X brought then we have a winner. I do have to say I'm pretty underwhelmed by everything I've seen from XB2 so far. It just didn't grab me like the first 2 games did. But I'm there day 1 of course, the first 2 are the definition of rough diamonds for me, who knows, maybe this'll be the first real diamond in the series.

Dude tries so hard to make it sound like this story will be new and not like the other "solemn old guys and cool dudes" kind of stories, and the trailer looking so generic. That + typical sexist jrpg shenanigans.

Yeah, please continue ignoring glaring issues such as this.

You're right. It's such a huge issue you will feel the need to bring it up in every preview thread, the review thread, the OT, fucking everywhere. Fight the good fight. But if you intend to do that let me know so i can put you on ignore.

Hint: I'm not ignoring it, I'm not a fan of the design. But I don't feel the need to derail every thread with that fact. And this WILL happen until the game comes out. And after that as well.

Yeah, he also did character designs for "Expelled from Paradise".

He's a hentai artist too so let that sink in for a while.

Eh. I feel this doesn't say much when plenty of successful and famous artists have drew porn. Go Nagai drew porn, but that didn't stop him from being a major inspiration on works from Berserk, Souls series to the mecha genre to the magical girl genre.

*Looks up his profile*

Uh....also apparently pioneered the ecchi genre.

That said, I don't really like these designs.

I was thinking more in terms of this being a game published by Nintendo. Obviously a ton of Japanese artists do some of that stuff on the side.

I was already quite excited about it, but this message makes me more confident the game will be great. And if they don't "meet the deadline" that's fine. I want a properly finished game.

To be honest. This part sounds not good:

"A young adult story with a taste of boy-meets-girl. Lately it feels like all I’ve been doing are games full of devastation, like where your hometown burns down at the start, or the spaceship you’re riding crashes(oh wait, that is all I ever do). Sometimes I just wanna try something different!

I also don't like the character design.

That said, Xenoblade and Xenoblade X are together with Ni No Kuni the best J-RPGs of PS3/Wii(U) era and I am sure they will make another amazing game. I especially love the worlds and combat gameplay and both seems to be intact. So my hype is only slightly deflated.

Oh. Yeah. I can see that with Nintendo, but Nintendo seems to have gotten more lenient in the last 5 years or so. At least Nintendo of Japan anyway.

Hmmm...I don't know what your deal is, but are those "glaring issues" relevant to what's in the OP? If not, then cut the crap and make a new thread about these so-called glaring issues.

Stop derailing these threads with your fantasies about little girls in skimpy suits! That thought never crossed my mind when watching these trailers. It says something about you guys when you see immediately such things in these...

It would be so nice to read proper discussions about this game, but we clearly need some guidance to keep these threads nice.

You can say what you want and get out of the thread. Why are you so hell bound to ruin everyone's joy about a very impressive looking game with a tad silly looking garments?

So, what MomoQca said, make a new thread and stop derailing this.

As long no mod explicitly says that this sort of derailing is forbidden this stuff will go down the same way the ugly faces derailing in Xenoblade X threads did. Probably even worse because it's kind of a social issue.

No mod did anything about XCX threads all being about shitposting, concern trolling from people that didn't plan to buy the game and constant and predictable derail with "lol the faces!", "I hate Sawano!", "american voices!", "rap music lol" and more, no matter what was the actual topic of the thread, so I have little faith that will be different with this title... I mean the game wasn't perfect but come on...

Hes on about people in here spamming how that Swordwoman/Whatever is looking like a 12 year old when her anatomy alone makes that pretty much impossible.

That's really not what he's saying

Criticizing people for derailing the thread to bring up their issue with the character design is fine, dumb shit like "It says something about you guys when you see immediately such things in these..." is not

aravuus

Is it not? He's saying that people who see a 12 year old girl in this

have some underlying issues they should work on. Or just can't distinguish animu tropes from reality.

Not that I agree on that, but their behaviour is dumb and unnessecary nontheless.

No, I see it as him reacting to the design criticism. If it was anyone else than Cuningas I could see that, but I've never seen him post anything remotely sensible, so I'm not going to give him the benefit of doubt.

If this is a reply to my posts, you had better read them again. I didn't imply that Pyra is underage. I'm criticizing her design as sexist. It's of course not only this game, but games in general that tend to pander to straight male teenagers with these female designs.

I think it's important to bring up this discussion for as long as these designs continue to exist. But I also don't want to derail threads, so I'm going to leave now.

My bad then, don't know the poster as good as you do it seems.

It's telling enough that's the only post you reply to, really. You calling me out and then not replying to any of the backfire except the most garish one. You already helped derailing it, so it's not like you didn't accomplish your mission. I really wonder how often you will bring up the designs in Xenoblade related threads, since they most definetly won't cease to exist.

I'm not digging how dumb looking the main cast costumes are, but I hope to customize their apperance that they won't look as dumb.

Seriously, is the main protagonist so poor that those are the only pants he could afford?
