TF2 Engineer update incoming?

Guys. With the Wrangler's ability to fire missiles at a faster rate, as well as direct it anywhere, those demomen and soldiers who peek out to destroy your sentry will now eat corner missiles. Fuck yessssssss

That said, you'll be spy/sniper bait. Stab then all day to sap. Sniper could headshot then take a few at the sentry.

The problem atm is not that f00l got a wrench but that he and 2 other friends got them by predicting drop times (There's a sourceop thread for this). If this is true then what it means is that every craft DOES NOT have a chance of getting a golden wrench but rather only crafts at a specific time do. I really hope this isn't true but the coincidences and the threads about predicting drop times (with some accurate predictions even) are leaving a bad taste in my mouth.

I actually see it working like that. Valve is most likely allowing enough drops a day before the next upgrade they reveal, but not too much to go over. They even said they would be considerate to timezones so everyone gets a fair chance.

Back-burner. If you can come up at enemies from the behind with the back-burner, it takes them down almost instantly.

Not much you can do about sentries though. Well, maybe the home-wrecker. I've never used it . . . is that any good? Pretty hard to take out a sentry with a Pyro. Kinda need a soldier or demoman for that.

If someone else distracts the sentry or it is placed close around a corner you can easily take it out. Once you get close enough you can circle around it faster than it can turn.

The possibilities for the new abilities are just going though my mind :D

There's suggestion of a Guitar being the Melee weapon, but what then becomes of the Wrench, the Engies most necessary weapon?

The Wrangler is super interesting, I want to see it in action. A tag-team of Engies could make that thing super effective -- have one Engie aim and shoot the gun and have another constantly replenishing the bullets for you. With a double rate of fire a Sentry won't last long at all.

I just saw 2 dropping.

Made me realize how much life sucks. Was sitting there, thinking if I should craft away my 2 Razorbacks, said no and 3 seconds later...SUCCESS. Wrench 61 dropped for someone out there. :(

I guess the "code" just hands out a global cooldown for the wrench and if you somehow know what that cooldown is....well yeah.

So apparently the wrenches aren't dropping any more due to haxoring :(

I wonder how they figured out the pattern for wrench drops? The message doesn't show up in the console logs so it would be hard to get an exact timestamp.

Christ some people spend way too much time on items that are pretty much completely aesthetic.

In all fairness its a very rare item that gives probably one of the best death effects in the game. While it is simply cosmetic, being able to turn your enemy into a solid gold statue is a little more enticing than wearing some ridiculous looking hat on your head.

well i'm not really pissed but

that's a such stupid way to do it. valve should've known certain people would find a way to cheat the system - at least give away intervals at which golden wrenches would be "released" so that we know when not to waste out crafting chances, yeah?

(this is all still with the stipulations that it's actually true)

Oh. I see all the discussion has moved to this thread. Well then, here's my late impressions on the Wrangler:

Thoughts on the Wrangler.

I hated all those ideas of "How about letting the Engineer jump into his sentry and aim at stuff!" Well, those people got their compromise.

The Wrangler is a defensive Engie's dream. You can probably use it all the way from resupply. You can use your sentry to spy check. Your sentry now has infinite range and can make use of rocket splash to root out enemies around corners. You can aim at people's feet when they uber rush you and pop them into the air yourself during the next rocket volley.

The stats are incredible. Double bullet speed means literally twice the firepower at level 1 and 2, and at least 1.5 at level 3. 66% damage reduction means only a third of damage taken, which means that you have a chance of surviving an uber, as it now takes at least 6 stickies to blow up your level 3.

Personally, when it was unveiled yesterday I was disappointed, but now I think even I might use it. Still, it's a very defensive weapon, simply because it leaves your body defenseless when you use it, and you can't heal or reload your sentry without help. And you'll have a disadvantage against Scouts. However, you will be able to keep up with sentry spinsters.

My sentry will now glow with an awesome power...

Keep your flare gun. I just can't imagine life without the airburst. I ended up getting some 20-30kills earlier just air burst camping the bridge on Doublecross. Everything from putting out fires, to deflecting rockets(Specifically waiting for the Krit med to go at it), to blowing away the invic med from the one he is invic-ing, to locking up dead ringer spies, to blowing back charging demos, etc. :lol

I completely suck at airbursting. I'm not sure if its lag or just me sucking, so I opt for the backburner. There is nothing more satisfying that running into a room full of enemies and they don't notice you. Literally everything, including heavies, die in about half a second. Usually long enough for someone to turn around and see you as they die. When heavies march out with medic in tow, I just stand behind them both and melt them over and over. Heavies rarely go for a single target, they assume the medic will just heal through it, or someone else will take care of it. They ALWAYS go for groups of people rather than a single, so you're almost always ignored even when they see you.

If you wanna go for specific things.

The wrench has a random chance of being crafted OR you have to craft at exactly the right time OR both.

Whatever the case, there is no specific blueprint for the golden wrench.

BUT WHAT TIME?

Well I am doomed. I barely have anything to craft with. Even after owning the game for couple years I only got like 43 hours (when they started tracking stats/time).

Holy shit, so the steam forums are blown up, and people are crafting at a determined time now. Well, this will probably shut up all the users in the steam forum that argue "RANDOM IS RANDOM"

Then does it really matter that you get the wrench if you hardly play?

I have around 1200 hours and there's also no chance in hell I'll be getting one. :(

My plan is to craft all of my remaining materials after an hour has passed before a certain lucky numbered wrench.

Would have been nice but its stat tracking is weird.

For example when that award for when you started playing was really off for me. I didn't start playing this game in 2010.

Also I have way more than 43 hours played but thats what it says on it...

Well, something is wrong on your end (likely memory), because despite having reset my stats, I got the right date. Sep 19 2007.

Date of purchase (you can verify from your steam page)

You know, this update is pretty disappointing, golden wrench aside.

Well, no, actually it's pretty disappointing BECAUSE of the golden wrench. I loved the War update, it got me playing a lot more than I had been and was a lot of fun and there were friendly rivalries.

This golden wrench thing, on the other hand, has gotten me to... start idling again. If there was SOMETHING... some IN-GAME event, I would love to jump in and play. As it is, though, I'm just waiting for the actual update to be released before I start playing again.

):

Ironically, I'm going to the beach on Friday and won't be near my desktop on Thursday, so I'm going to completely miss the update's first two weeks. Man, that's making me kind of sad. D: WHAT IF THEY ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING AFTER THE UPDATE?!

So, we still have one actual unlock to go. Whats the betting, that its a new building, or a new melee?

I'm hoping for building personally.

Bah I have never crafted anything, is there a guide?

First sort by class and then only craft items you already have. You can mix and match within any class's items. You only need 2 extras. (three metals are needed to upgrade to the next metal)

Where? Cause my friend couple years back got me the Orange box. Which I added to steam. Since than I play it on three different machines. I got an medal for getting it in supposedly at the end of 2009..which is not true.

I was in a new office by than and I received the game in my old office. On my birthday. It doesn't even say my birthday.

I can only find hours played....where do I find it?

I actually think theres more to the golden wrench than were aware, looking at the code theres messages for when a wrench is destroyed. I mean there has to be a pretty strong incentive for someone to destroy an item limited to only one hundred people right? Not to mention I would hope Valve would try to avoid another community backlash after the soldier medal fiasco, the last time people freaked out over limited items several thousand were being distributed. :lol

I really hope its a new weapon or that wrench that leaked awhile back that increased build speed. So far everything revealed really only seems to benefit defensive engies, and the last thing I want to see in TF2 are more ways to turtle.

steampowered.com, account details on the top right. If it's a different date on there from your medal, then I have no clue what went wrong!

Count your blessings that you won't have to experience 12vs12 engineer stagnantfests.

Wow, Valve actually managed to upgrade the Sentry, without actually replacing the Sentry by a new building!

The Wrangler opens up a very wide variety of strategies. If the Sentry becomes entirely manual (aka, it blinding points and shooters wherever you tells it to), the possibilities are endless.

And the tradeoff (being defenseless) is enough to create all new kinds of take-down-the-engie strategies.

Nothing can top the WAR update. NOTHING! This feels "small" and meh so far. Hopefully we get surprised by Meet the Pyro on Thursday at least.

It will only be a blessing if there's no "event" to go along with it. Besides, I always enjoy the post-update chaos.

I could've sworn Valve had said something in the past about wanting to make the engineer update as popular as the soldier/demo update, but all this is doing so far is making people waste time crafting.

Mrhh.

I suspect something else is in the works and I'm going to miss it. \:

It'll be related somehow to the shoulder-carrying toolbox images/achievements. No clue exactly what it'll be (maybe movable gear, who knows) but that's the one link still missing.

Maybe the "event" will be more post-update. Maybe something to stem people from all being Engie.

They should've done something like keeping a counter on how many times goldrush point 3 gets blown up and tying that into the whole Australium thing. And have a system where successfully defending it gets you the GW while successfully blowing it up gets you something else.

the best part about it (for me at least) is the lack of targeting. Getting soldiers/demos/snipers who are out of range is a godsend.

edit: oh, and the times for the wrench are designated. It's not "random" at all. Whoever crafts at the precise time a wrench is supposed to drop, gets it.

They could have done a lot of things to make this better.

At this point I'd almost rather go back to the days of the medic update. At least then my expectation bar isn't set too high.
