The Darkness: The Official Thread

apparently you can also take down the helicopter with the tentacles.

I won't ruin anything for you, but if the leaked achievements are correct, this isn't even close to the craziest thing you can take down.

As long as it is at least over 4 hours long. How long was Riddick?

Riddick took me about 6-7 hours first time through, and that was without finding all of the hidden cigarette packs.

Riddick was way, way too short, but it was also without any sort of multiplayer component that could have added to its longevity.

..you guys don't understand!

....THIS ****ING GAME WILL OWN US ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SAVE YOUR CHILDREN....YOUR FAMILY....rrRRRRRUUUUUUNNN!!!!!!

Riddick was a definitive example of quality over quantity. There wasn't a moment of filler; it was pure, satisfying entertainment from beginning to end and easily one of my favorite games of last gen.

I was really disappointed when Starbreeze announced The Darkness as their next project instead of a Riddick sequel, but holy cow is this game looking amazing. I can't wait!

Starbreeze really dropped the ball by not draping this game's cover with some of the original artwork. As it stands, you never get to see what he looks like in full Darkness garb because there's no 3rd person work like in Riddick.

I'm pretty sure there's concept art floating around of a darker and sinister version of his armor. It was neat in the comics because it kinda helped seeing as how he was being shot at all the time and fighting supernatural beings like Angelus etc.

let's hope if they did show him, he wouldn't look like that second picture.

That's actually the first image of The Darkness I ever saw, and I could not have found it less appealing - I didn't want to play as a character that looked that ridiculous. The game looks amazing, but I wouldn't be the least bit disappointed if you never saw Jackie in that form outside of the first-person view.

read the quote from an interview on front page from Marc S. about why he thought it was good idea in the end, that they didn't use Jackie's full-on Darkness get-up...

...oh and an Interview with Mike Patton from IGN is up

IGN Interview said:
IGN: You say that you are a big gamer. What is your gaming background? What are some of your all-time favorite games?
Patton: Background? Just getting hooked at a young age on my Sega Genesis. I used to play more than I do now but still find time to upgrade the systems and play some of the latest games. All time faves would be Smash TV, NHL Hockey, Grand Theft Autos, NBA Lives, Sonic.

IGN: Do you own any of the current-gen systems?

Mike Patton: I got a PS3 and a PSP. The Wii looks fun.

IGN: How did you get the job working on The Darkness?

Mike Patton: They [Starbreeze Interactive] called and offered me some money.

IGN: Your voice in The Darkness is quite haunting and eerie, just as it should be. You really sound like a demon. Was there any digital modification employed to make your voice so otherworldly?
Mike Patton: To be honest I don't know. I have not heard it or seen it since I did it. I'm looking forward to playing it. It seems to be getting good buzz. I hope it means more work. Darkness 2?

First impressions on Eurogamer

Eurogamer said:
While the atmosphere of the game seems impeccable, some aspects remain somewhat rooted in the same design sensibilities we encountered in Chronicles of Riddick. The free-roaming New York environments feature a number of sub-quests, accessed simply by walking up to people and finding out what they need help with. These quests generally reward you with unlockable content (ranging from concept art to entire issues of The Darkness comic). However, they send you around districts which are generally empty of NPC characters, which miraculously repair themselves after firefights and which generally feel a bit more artificial and non-interactive than we've come to expect from next-gen entertainment.

Combined with the game's weak physics system, this can result in The Darkness feeling very much like last generation's gaming wrapped up in a beautiful shell of modern graphics, superb storytelling and great level design - in the version we've played, anyway. However, there's arguably more praise in there than criticism. The Darkness may offer little new or hugely ambitious in its gameplay, but those things which it does, it does better than almost any game of this type we've played. Writing, presentation, pacing, voice acting and minute-to-minute gameplay are all excellent, based on our experience so far. Much as we love innovation, we're perfectly happy to shelve that requirement for a labour of love that simply takes all the old tricks and does them better.

Graphically, it's worth noting, The Darkness is a high point - not as stylised as Gears of War, nor as overtly beautiful, but chock full of dramatic lighting, gorgeous visual effects and imaginative, varied characters and creatures. The presentation, too, rarely misses a beat from what we've seen. One fantastic touch is that every now and then, Jackie appears in a lovingly animated scene where he simply stands in a beam of light, in a darkened room, and addresses the player with his thoughts on the plot, or an anecdote from his life. It took us nearly four hours of play to realise that these well-scripted, engrossing interludes were hiding loading delays.

Of course, being a next-gen game, The Darkness wouldn't be complete without multiplayer. To that end, the game sports a comprehensive set of options for setting up various different types of game, including crowd pleasers like Deathmatch and CTF. We didn't get a chance to bring our preview code online, but we're definitely looking forward to seeing how Starbreeze has integrated Darkness powers into the online arena.

So, the vital question; should you be quivering in anticipation of The Darkness' launch at the end of this month? In simple terms, if you enjoyed Riddick, or if you have ever liked first-person shooters, or horror games, or both, then yes, The Darkness is a fascinating prospect. In even more simple terms, quickly popping this game onto the Xbox 360 debug unit to check that it worked turned into a lost weekend, a remorseful 4am bedtime, and watching the credit screen roll past at some ungodly hour on Sunday night. This, believe me, doesn't happen very often around here. Call it the lure of the Darkness.

Wow, after watching the gametrailers preview my anticipation for this went from slight interest to hard-as-a-rock boner material. The only thing that is cock blocking me from this game is the frame-rate issues the game seems to have, it looked to drop to sub-20's at some points, but maybe that was my pc chugging with the HD video.

I think that was your computer chugging. I noticed no slowdown. Just a whole lot of awesomeness.

There is even more than taking down heli's. What flies and is bigger than a heli...?

About seeing yourself in third person with Darkness: well, you can use your creeping dark, crawl, and the face yourself. So there is a way to see yourself in full darkness mode. Quite some tentacles etc. :D

how is the music in this game?

It has one very good theme in it in the more tranquil scenes. The music during action is also ok.

NDA for previews ended on 13 june yes. Gamer.nl preview will be up soon.

I was at the releaseparty like 1½ hour ago here in Stockholm and have to say it feels like a really great game.

About the length of it, the devs estimated the gametime to be between 12 and 15 hours if you're a standard gamer.

There seemed to be more bloom on the PS3-version :S

If you are swedish some nice impressions from the party/about the party will come up at www.nordicgamers.se in perhaps an hour.

yup swedish here. Did you see the final build? Seems that media has the preview build now. dont know how big difference it is.

I'm getting the review build tomorrow.

Agent Otaku: I played a PS3 preview build, it's great. Period. :D

What do you want to know...?

Still the preview-build I'm afraid, the only thing everyone could play was the full demo that was shown.

GAH they didnt show any parts from the otherworld.

PS3-version seemed pretty much identical to the 360-version, perhaps a bit more bloom.

:EDIT: Can't get it up now, gotta have someone that checks it for errors and stuff, and none is awake, bummer.

the only thing everyone could play was the full demo that was shown.

isnt that demo gonna hit 360?

:EDIT: Can't get it up now, gotta have someone that checks it for errors and stuff, and none is awake, bummer.

For all the people that don't read swedish.

The game doesn't publically come out until the 25th, right?

Perhaps it is the 'gold' release party?

awesome :D

.....well would just like to know:

-how does it feel with the SIXAXIS...ie: hows the deadzone, response, etc., when compared to the 360 pad (have you played 360 version?)

-so did the "PS3 gets more video, less texture detail" turn out to be true?.....or only half true, since they've had like a year since that statement was made, to work with the PS3 hardware more....

- load times identical between platforms?....or is PS3 version maybe doing some HDD caching

-also heard rumors of "extra comic content" going on the blu-ray....did this turn out to be true?

....I understand though, that you probably haven't had extensive time with BOTH versions..... so no worries :)

I think it's gonna hit Live and PSN, yep. Seems like the game will be really sweet :)

- The game is out 29:th here in euro, but it was named release party, but's and stuff like that.

Controls feel great. Not any problem with it.

I do not know about the texture detail on the 360-version. What I do know is that the PS3-version looks great nevertheless. Not much room for improvement on 360 anyway.

I don't know the comparison between loading times, but the loading times on PS3 are a little bit on the long side. However, there are not so much loading screens in the game so it's really not a big deal.

The general point is that how great the 360-version may be, it simply can't be much better than the PS3-version and most probably isn't. Only 100% difference is more tv-channels on PS3.

as a person who owns both consoles even if one version is minutely better than the other i will get the version that runs the best...thats why i need a definitave answer on which version looks better.

Even if you say the 360 version isnt "much Better" i will get it if it is even if it is a little better or vice versa.

Yeah, it could be that the 360-version has slightly better loading times or slightly better textures. But I just do not know that as I don't have the 360-version and only the PS3-version. PS3-version has the additional channel, that's the only factual difference I can give you. The rest is speculation.

I'm not really a 'rumble gamer' indeed.

It sounds logical indeed that the 360-version has rumble. Didn't even think about it to be honest.

yeah...honestly it doesn't....may sound weird put I've been turning off rumble on all my gaming platforms for like 2 years now.....

just a preference.....

no, i don't think it sounds that weird at all. some games utilize it pretty poorly, so i can see how you may be turned off it.

No, they didn't show multiplayer action, but from what I discussed with Starbreeze it sounds like there are some really nice game modes.

I really liked the "Last man standing", where the game starts with all humans but one, and everyone time a human player dies he turns into a darkling until there is only one, or none, left.

Then there should be a couple of multiplayer modes where you fight Human vs. Darklings and other more standard modes aswell.

Darklings are really cool. I love them.

Eh... considering the Eurogamer preview states "One fantastic touch is that every now and then, Jackie appears in a lovingly animated scene where he simply stands in a beam of light, in a darkened room, and addresses the player with his thoughts on the plot, or an anecdote from his life. And have you managed to play it in HD yet, as comments about texture quality and framerate are almost entirely moot given you've stated that you've only played it in SD so far.

Yeah, all the effects in the game are really nice. Fire, and different portals. I can't wait until I get review code early next week.

I want it now :S
