The Darkness: The Official Thread

Eh... considering the Eurogamer preview states "One fantastic touch is that every now and then, Jackie appears in a lovingly animated scene where he simply stands in a beam of light, in a darkened room, and addresses the player with his thoughts on the plot, or an anecdote from his life. It took us nearly four hours of play to realise that these well-scripted, engrossing interludes were hiding loading delays." ... wanna expand on the loading a bit?

And have you managed to play it in HD yet, as comments about texture quality and framerate are almost entirely moot given you've stated that you've only played it in SD so far.

Loading: yes, the guy is talking. But in the preview version there's also some loading left when the guy is done talking, i.e. some loading times are longer than those sequences.

Played it on SD, not HD.

But there's no point about asking these things as I really got no idea how these things are on the 360, I just don't know. All I know is that this is a great game regardless the system.

Only 100% difference is more tv-channels on PS3.
About that. Do we know exactly what type of additional video content the PS3 version is gonna get? Only thing I know is that both versions will be getting Nosferatu and five episodes of Popeye.

In the PS3-version I've seen a videoclip station also and some other stuff which I don't remember.

But I'll count the amount of television stations and post them here later.

...man I've read this before.......BUT ****IN-A IS IT BRILLAINT! :D

Yeah I don't know why I love that feature so much. It's even better watching it, like in the Preview. Can't wait to see them in the full game.

Ugh, 360 keeps locking up with game discs so I just got off the phone with MS and my coffin should be here in 3-5 days. I just knew this was going to happen right before The Darkness =(

Well, if you called today there's a chance you will have your refurb right around the time it's out.

I just tried to Babelfish it. Apparantly this Sweden-place isn't significant enough to be on Babelfish.

I asked a Swedish friend of mine to translate it but it's almost 4am her time so she told me tomorrow. :lol

Any kindhearted soul care to translate?

not that much is revealed of interest actually..

* they had a demo version of 360 and PS3 running
* graphically the 360 and PS3 looked about identical, maybe the PS3 got more bloom*
* the game has 10000 rows of dialogue. A standard movie has 1000.
* 50 people from hollywood was hired in order to film facial expressions
* game has been in development for 3 years with around 45 people.

I said "wow"

I can't stop watching that Gametrailers preview. I was previously interested in The Darkness, but it wasn't one of my most anticipated games. After repeated viewings of that video I could not be more excited - the carnage looks incredibly satisfying. I love the little details - Jackie's fingers actually pull the triggers of the guns and you can see the hammers cock for a split-second before the weapons fire. The smoke wisps are also really well done. These kinds of little touches can make such a difference, but so few developers take the time (or have the time) to include them.

Damn Santa Cruiser when did you get all excited about The Darkness? I thought you were mostly a Nintendo gamer?

Viral marketing? :P

my friend is the level and texture designer ;P

edit: I am just happy for him...

Sorry for not revealing more cool stuff, well, they didn't really say any more cool stuff than what I wrote there. However, heard that promo-copies would get sent out here in swe next week, and if so, a full review will be up by next weekend.

gamereactor will have a review june 15th is that from preview version then?

Yes it's from the preview-version. Or wait... I think I had a chat with Take 2 about this a while ago, I'm almost sure it was that preview copies was out for mags but websites would have to wait for it a few weeks (the preview build that got sent out early last week, or the one before that or so to websites).. However we have no devkit so I didn't take one :(

Gamereactor kinda likes writing "Beta test"-articles from watching in-game video material so I don't really take their credibility as the best.

However, I do like some of their articles, and the free gaming magazine path is nice. I would'nt consider paying for their stuff though...

:edit: written publications always get preview copies way before pure websites, and reviews aswell, however, gah.. could be the real build though... hmmm... hadfh

WOW, i have always liked the look of this game but never really dove to far into it. Its always been on my to buy list but having red a few preivews now and seen some in game action im blown away tbh. It looks fantastic, the animation of gun play etc looks fantastic preorder am done and its up there with bioshock in my hype o metre.

I think I was a bit tired at the event, but some other guys talked with Starbreeze and apparently there is no antialiasing on the PS3-version, because Starbreeze wasn't experienced enough with the console... Well, first time I saw both versions I thought the 360 version was smoother, and I only played a short time on the PS3-version..

:edit: I mean they had to choose between HDR and AA, and they went with HDR.

hmmmm...........

That Mike Patton IGN interview was hilarious, and revealing. It's awesome that he's doing VO work for Portal as well. This game wasn't even on my radar until i saw those gametrailer vids. Looks to be awesome.

It sure looks like it. Honestly, I dont think you'll regret buying the game for PS3 either, but as someone said earlier in the thread - "Any distinct changes whatsoever" or something.

PS3-version gets more video material and stuff though...

Who am I kiddin'? Of course I'm gonna get the 360-version :)

How is Oblivion's port an indication of how The Darkness' fared?

That's like saying "Hey, is Wild Hogs any good?" "If Seven Samurai is any indication, you bet!"

You should have asked him how Shivering Isles looks on the PS3.

Well, considering it's an example of a game that sacrificed AA for HDR and AF and ended up making the port with graphical improvements, I'd say it's possible the two titles may end up looking pretty similar after all. Fantards are funny.

For the reference, Mass Effect is supposed to have 20000 lines of dialogue. I guess there will be plenty of cutscenes in The Darkness ^^

The game came much later, with Shader optimizations and etc. It wasn't taking advantage of the Ps3, but of the added time they had with the Engine, this is Bethesda devs themselfs that say it.

And shivering isles isn't available for the Ps3 version is it?

Yeah, the battle music was metal.

Damn, I should have waited a bit with that article..

Anyhow - the music sets in when there's bad guys around, and it works really well :) Lovable really.

The Darkness on 360 has very good texture filtering, though.

Too bad you didn't read the part I said it was due to Starbreeze inexperience.

Then I wouldn't have to write this reply... poor me..

HMMM

i am sure there are...but just not this one it seems, i dont see why you are overreacting so much :lol

Starbreeze said they just were not experienced enough with the ps3.

The lack of hands on info on the PS3 version is a bit unsettling, but the couple of Gamers Day previews I've read indicated the PS3 version was looking/running very well. There weren't any blatant flaws mentioned.

Why is this the 1st time we have heard about no AA in the PS3 version? Are the jaggies invisible?

No AA 720p looks like shit from my experience.
