I wish it was the only format we had to support since it's quite a bit faster to encode than wmv, but unfortunately mp4 streaming from windows media player is problematic, to say the least.blindrocket said:Thanks for the .mp4 support!

play magazine (uk) gave it 91/100 and the final comment said...'Few licensed games go beyond the realms of their source material, but the darkness does in a fun, gritty and engaging way that shows other developers how its done on the PS3. This unique FPS will find many fans upon release'
The review doesn't say anything about the online aspects of the game most probably cos the servers are not yet up, but it does say that...'the first playthrough takes about 14 hours depending on how much you want to see'... as it said there are a few side quest to be taken on if you want and also that there is...'all the source material you could ever want'... in the form of an entire back catalog of Top Cow comics new darkling outfits and production art.
You can read every single The Darkness comic in the game? Or am I reading it wrong somehow? Cause that's pretty cool. Usually it's just stupid comic covers. But here you're collecting actual comics?SantaC said:new review out

from gamefaqs..
Does he even play or read about the game before he demos it to everyone over the Internet?SantaC said:Gerstmann strikes again!
First they ask him what the darkness is. He says, a videogame! Then he says there will be no online multiplayer and announces it coming to PC also :lol :lol
Someone also asked about the story, he said, it's about the mafia!

Thank God I didn't watch. It would've just made me angry. Honestly, their job is to know video games, at least do some research.SantaC said:Gerstmann strikes again!

I did watch it, and it was just as pointless as you've imagined. When the viewers know more about a game than the "professionals", then something is horribly wrong.HydrantC12 said:Thank God I didn't watch. It would've just made me angry. + Gorgeous environments, clever puzzles, varied, awesome story
- Low tempo/slowpaced, ugly cutscenes
Jonas Mäki says it contains a lot of good ideas, but he's disappointed by the tempo. It's a bit too low for him to be as immersed by the story as he was with Riddick. The firefights lack the senseless intensity found in the comics, which is a shame. But luckily the variety largely makes up for it. Weapons, superpowers, darklings.
He goes on to say that The Darkness is a perfect alternative for those who seek a little more story, a little more dialog and a little more exploration in their FPS's. A heavy, suggestive story so cruel it really gets to you. At the same time you're interacting with the environment in a beautiful way, you can choose to start a conversation with an old man in the subway station or call your girlfiend Jenny whenever you please.
To sum it up The Darkness is simply an awesome gaming experience which both lives up to Starbreeze's reputation as well as the übercool comic.
Does it even have cutscenes in the traditional sense? From what I've heard and seen it's all either first person or it's the monologues when loading. Can't see how that could be referred to as ugly either.jetjevons said:Ugly cutscenes? I beg to differ but whatever.

Oh wait, lol, second opinion by Petter Hegevall.
I had high expectations, and while the atmosphere and some parts of the story work very well, other things don't work at all. For starters, the layout is unnecessarily cumbersome and linear, the controls remind me of a ten year old game and the graphics aren't much better than in the three year old Riddick.

Well, based on the videos, there are times when the cutscenes have an somewhat "old PC" look to them. The majority of what has been shown looks excellent, but there are clearly a few rough edges in there. Not a huge deal, though, and not unexpected. The game looks killer.jetjevons said:Ugly cutscenes? I beg to differ but whatever.
SantaC said:the review is BULLSHIT. It's based on a preview version with no multiplayer. The same preview that eurogamer had, but unlike gamereactor eurogame dont review on preview builds. Don't pay attention to it.
i think my friend harpa can agree on that.

Well, they do have cool covers these days. They're obviously bought, but they're pretty nonetheless. Basically the whole cover is dedicated to and designed around a single game, including the first and last page.jetjevons said:That absolutely sucks. Gamereactor FTMFL.

They do have a small blurb about multiplayer. Says something like this:
"Even if the story is the most important part of The Darkness, there's also solid multiplayer support. You can choose to play traditionally or focus on your Darkness powers. If you go with the latter you can build up armies of little Darklings, who with their sneering comments battle with your enemies. Something which makes The Darkness feel different from anything else in the genre."
:lol

I'm confused.

I'm a reviewer for Gamer.nl, received the review version for PS3 some days ago and completed the game.Quazar said:Who are you Mesijs ? Did this game come out yet or are you reviewer/dev?

I think in pure terms of quality The Darkness is a lot better.Quazar said:Oh ok. Trying to figure out which game to get this month. Overlord/The Darkness. Guess I'll have to wait for reviews for both.
Mesijs said:I think in pure terms of quality The Darkness is a lot better.
But it depends on your personal taste. Overlord feels more like a satire I think, more accesible and fun. The Darkness is, well, just the perfect action game. So pick what you like.
Mideon said:Can you answer any questions about the quality of the PS3 version compared with the 360 (I know you said you had the PS3 version but maybe you have seen the 360 version)
I have both consoles so the choice is a difficult one!

Mesijs said:Really, these guys do not know what they're talking about. I just completed the whole game and I'm impressed. 9/10 at least.
About the 'drawbacks':
- slow paced: well, since when is this a negative...? Yes, the game has some incredible shooting sequences and it also has scenes of dialog and non-gunning. But I would say that the pace of the game is near perfect. The game would be really dumb if you would shoot all the time, then the focus on the story would be lost. So this is actually a ridiculous statement, really.
- ugly cut scense: first of all, there are no cutscenes. He must either mean 1) the scenes played during loading screens or 2) the ingame scenes where you have no control over your character. Whatever he means, it's a laughable negative point, really. The first-person ingame 'cut scenes' are really, really great and those other scenes are just a cool way to fill up the loading screen.
- lay-out linear and cumbersome: has this guy played the game at all? First, it's NOT completely linear, and even the linear parts can be played in completely different ways. When he means with 'linear' that there are a lot of scripted events, then it's an even more stupid negative point, because those event tell the story masterfully.
- controls: really, there's NOTHING wrong with the controls. I can't even imagine how the hell he came to this drawback. It's just plain, 100% bullshit. Ridiculous.
- graphics: ehm, they're great...? Lighting is fantastic, characters are detailed (especially the faces), cool physics. It looks really polished, the textures are extremely detailed.
I'm sorry to say it, but these are guys who don't have a clue about this game. I wonder for how long they played and how they could ever reach such a conclusion.
You can believe them or you can believe me. You'll see when you'll play the game, but I think you'll like it...
