The Darkness: The Official Thread

Thanks for the .mp4 support!
I wish it was the only format we had to support since it's quite a bit faster to encode than wmv, but unfortunately mp4 streaming from windows media player is problematic, to say the least.

new review out

play magazine (uk) gave it 91/100 and the final comment said...'Few licensed games go beyond the realms of their source material, but the darkness does in a fun, gritty and engaging way that shows other developers how its done on the PS3. This unique FPS will find many fans upon release'

The review doesn't say anything about the online aspects of the game most probably cos the servers are not yet up, but it does say that...'the first playthrough takes about 14 hours depending on how much you want to see'... as it said there are a few side quest to be taken on if you want and also that there is...'all the source material you could ever want'... in the form of an entire back catalog of Top Cow comics new darkling outfits and production art.

from gamefaqs..

You can read every single The Darkness comic in the game? Or am I reading it wrong somehow? Cause that's pretty cool. Usually it's just stupid comic covers. But here you're collecting actual comics?

Yeah, they announced a while back that full comics would be unlockable. Didn't know it'd be the entire catalog though.

Gerstmann strikes again!

First they ask him what the darkness is. He says, a videogame! Then he says there will be no online multiplayer and announces it coming to PC also :lol :lol

Someone also asked about the story, he said, it's about the mafia!

I like how the darkness feeds on the hearts of the killed. I like how it's passed on through offspring.. and once it is, the carrier (the father) dies.

Seems like it'll be an awesome story.

Does he even play or read about the game before he demos it to everyone over the Internet?

Thank God I didn't watch. It would've just made me angry. Honestly, their job is to know video games, at least do some research.

I did watch it, and it was just as pointless as you've imagined. When the viewers know more about a game than the "professionals", then something is horribly wrong.

He kept having to restart the mission due to dying too, so all in all it was a fairly awful demonstration. But for what it's worth, he did seem to like it quite a bit. It's up for everyone to see now btw.

Anyway, I'm gonna go see if Gamereactor is available yet.

+ Gorgeous environments, clever puzzles, varied, awesome story
- Low tempo/slowpaced, ugly cutscenes

Jonas Mäki says it contains a lot of good ideas, but he's disappointed by the tempo. It's a bit too low for him to be as immersed by the story as he was with Riddick. The firefights lack the senseless intensity found in the comics, which is a shame. But luckily the variety largely makes up for it. Weapons, superpowers, darklings.

He goes on to say that The Darkness is a perfect alternative for those who seek a little more story, a little more dialog and a little more exploration in their FPS's. A heavy, suggestive story so cruel it really gets to you. At the same time you're interacting with the environment in a beautiful way, you can choose to start a conversation with an old man in the subway station or call your girlfiend Jenny whenever you please.

To sum it up The Darkness is simply an awesome gaming experience which both lives up to Starbreeze's reputation as well as the übercool comic.

Oh wait, lol, second opinion by Petter Hegevall.

I had high expectations, and while the atmosphere and some parts of the story work very well, other things don't work at all. For starters, the layout is unnecessarily cumbersome and linear, the controls remind me of a ten year old game and the graphics aren't much better than in the three year old Riddick.

Ugly cutscenes? I beg to differ but whatever.

Does it even have cutscenes in the traditional sense? From what I've heard and seen it's all either first person or it's the monologues when loading. Can't see how that could be referred to as ugly either.

Yikes. I hope we don't see too many of those.

Well, based on the videos, there are times when the cutscenes have an somewhat "old PC" look to them. The majority of what has been shown looks excellent, but there are clearly a few rough edges in there. Not a huge deal, though, and not unexpected. The game looks killer.

I'm even happier that I'll have my new Pioneer 5080 by the time this game is released in order to properly experience The Darkness.

So, it's mid-June now. Whatever happened to the demo coming "early June" huh? At this rate it's going to come out after the game. :lol

the review is BULLSHIT. It's based on a preview version with no multiplayer. The same preview that eurogamer had, but unlike gamereactor eurogamer dont review on preview builds.

i think my friend harpa can agree on that.

It can't have been as bad at the Halo 3 Beta demonstation.

Honestly, I don't think I've ever seen anyone take a great game and make it look completely and utterly dull. None of them could play, they hardly knew anything about the game and the whole thing was just tedious.

Well, they do have cool covers these days. They're obviously bought, but they're pretty nonetheless. Basically the whole cover is dedicated to and designed around a single game, including the first and last page.

They do have a small blurb about multiplayer. Says something like this:

"Even if the story is the most important part of The Darkness, there's also solid multiplayer support. You can choose to play traditionally or focus on your Darkness powers. If you go with the latter you can build up armies of little Darklings, who with their sneering comments battle with your enemies. Something which makes The Darkness feel different from anything else in the genre."

So they reviewed the multiplayer mode without ever actually playing it?

I'm confused.

I checked some shop dates today, could it be that the EU-Version got delayed 2 weeks? The new date seems to be the 13th july. ;(

GameReactor... ungh. Jonas Mäki... double ungh. This man is the Swedish equivalent of Jeff Gerstmann.

(EDIT) That's Mäki. And I want to punch him in his stupid face.

I have no problem if the graphics aren't much better than Riddick. What a great looking game that was - and still is today :)

Also - this is common. Early reviews often have one or two 'haters'. Want to get some attention? Give a hyped game a low score! Stir up the fanboys a bit..

I say wait for the big reputable(?) reviews from IGN etc..

Really, these guys do not know what they're talking about. I just completed the whole game and I'm impressed. 9/10 at least.

About the 'drawbacks':
- slow paced: well, since when is this a negative...? Yes, the game has some incredible shooting sequences and it also has scenes of dialog and non-gunning. But I would say that the pace of the game is near perfect. The game would be really dumb if you would shoot all the time, then the focus on the story would be lost. So this is actually a ridiculous statement, really.

- ugly cut scense: first of all, there are no cutscenes. He must either mean 1) the scenes played during loading screens or 2) the ingame scenes where you have no control over your character. Whatever he means, it's a laughable negative point, really. The first-person ingame 'cut scenes' are really, really great and those other scenes are just a cool way to fill up the loading screen.

- lay-out linear and cumbersome: has this guy played the game at all? First, it's NOT completely linear, and even the linear parts can be played in completely different ways. When he means with 'linear' that there are a lot of scripted events, then it's an even more stupid negative point, because those event tell the story masterfully.

- controls: really, there's NOTHING wrong with the controls. I can't even imagine how the hell he came to this drawback. It's just plain, 100% bullshit. Ridiculous.

- graphics: ehm, they're great...? Lighting is fantastic, characters are detailed (especially the faces), cool physics. It looks really polished, the textures are extremely detailed.

I'm sorry to say it, but these are guys who don't have a clue about this game. I wonder for how long they played and how they could ever reach such a conclusion.

You can believe them or you can believe me. You'll see when you'll play the game, but I think you'll like it...

Oh ok. Trying to figure out which game to get this month. Overlord/The Darkness. Guess I'll have to wait for reviews for both.

I think in pure terms of quality The Darkness is a lot better.

But it depends on your personal taste. Overlord feels more like a satire I think, more accesible and fun. The Darkness is, well, just the perfect action game. So pick what you like.

Can you answer any questions about the quality of the PS3 version compared with the 360 (I know you said you had the PS3 version but maybe you have seen the 360 version)

I have both consoles so the choice is a difficult one!

Thanks very much man I did not expect you to say anything and felt kinda bad about asking anyway!

Mmm its gonna be a close call that will most likely get decided when the game is out the rumble might sway me though.

Are we going to get the demo this week? I really want to try this out before I buy it. Everything about the game sounds great, but the "loose controls" sited by some previews worries me a bit.
