The Darkness: The Official Thread

Why is this the 1st time we have heard about no AA in the PS3 version? Are the jaggies invisible?

No AA 720p looks like shit from my experience.
None of the screenshots or game footage we've seen so far, except for maybe a few scenes from the very latest preview video thing on GameTrailers, have had any MSAA.

Any news of a PC version?

not that much is revealed of interest actually..

* they had a demo version of 360 and PS3 running
* graphically the 360 and PS3 looked about identical, maybe the PS3 got more bloom*
* the game has 10000 rows of dialogue. A standard movie has 1000.
* 50 people from hollywood was hired in order to film facial expressions
* game has been in development for 3 years with around 45 people.
Wow.. this has got to be at least $20 million for development not including marketing (another 5-10 mil?). I really hope it does well for them.

The lack of hands on info on the PS3 version is a bit unsettling, but the couple of Gamers Day previews I've read indicated the PS3 version was looking/running very well. There weren't any blatant flaws mentioned.

We have like 2 or 3 guys that have been talking about the Ps3 version in this thread.

I don't have time to highlight the good points. I gotta get going. Sorry.

When we heard that 2K was doing a comic game, we weren’t sure how to feel about it. Now that we’ve had some time in Jackie’s shoes, it seems that The Darkness could end up one of the sleeper hits of 2007. We’ll give you the whole rundown of the gameplay—including an assessment of the multiplayer portion—in a few weeks when the title is set to ship.

45 people is not much by next-gen standards though. Maybe it wasn't that expensive? GoW was being made for similar period of time by 25-45 people and cost ~9M USD IIRC.

I'm not suggesting it's not fine, I'm only saying it's not a case when on 360 it has AA but lacks AF on many surfaces (=no AF for most people).

Teamxbox preview breakdown:
Starbreeze is also to be commended for its handling of The Darkness’ achievements. In cases where you need to accomplish a certain number of actions, its in-game achievement list (off the pause menu) actually shows how far you’ve gotten toward earning the milestone. This way, if you’re trying to pull down the achievement for dispatching 25 foes with executions moves, you’ll know exactly how many you need to fulfill it.

You’ll also find other blinking items on your way in the form of little sheets of paper with phone numbers on them. After you pick up these “collectables,” you can use them at any phone to hear a funny or weird audio clip. While they add some entertainment value to your often-somber trek, completing each of these phone calls also triggers the unlocking of extra content you can view from the main menu. Developer Starbreeze Studios has certainly found a cool way to get you unlockables.

The game’s story and style are also very rich. As I was playing, it reminded me of Midway’s The Suffering, with its similar tale of a man fighting for his identity and for those he loves—conflicted not only between what’s right and wrong, but also trying to forge a path through the gray areas in between.

But those are all sidelines to the main gameplay—and, interestingly enough, we found that the game’s story is actually a big draw instead of something you want to pass with a press of a button, which is another great similarity to The Suffering. Jackie’s story is compelling enough, but later it takes some dramatic twists that’ll make it impossible for you to skip. Among them is when Jackie ends up in the “Otherworld,” which 2K described as a permanent World War II scenario, though with zombie soldiers prowling the grounds.
^I think he met WWI...Sounds great though!

Yeah but they used alot of outside talent (the 50 guys for the motion capture and stuff), and the development period, is pretty big -> 3 years.

And Gow only cost 10 million to make because the cost of U3 wasn't factored into the equation.

That said, i doubt we are looking at something more than 15 million max for this game.

The release date is set to the 25th of June for North America and the 29th for Yurop? Hmm, import schmimport?

My interest in this game has increased alot lately, it looks like it could be a real good game.

I thought I read somewhere there would be a demo for the PS3 anybody know anything concrete about it or was I just dreaming?

Why would this be a 'sleeper' hit? Pretty much every good quality first/third person shooter on the xbox 360 has been a hit. CoD 2, GRAW, CoD 3, Gears of War, Rainbow Six, Lost Planet, Crackdown, GRAW 2 . . . all hits. How could The Darkness not be a hit on the almighty next-gen shooter platform if it as good as people are saying it is?

Especially when you consider that there have been no other good shooter/action games released for the xbox 360 lately. (Tenchu Z bombed.)

The PS3 version should also do well since there are so few good titles for that platform. However, it might be hampered by the the fact that the much-delayed Rainbow Six: Vegas will finally ship for the PS3 right around the same time. Of course no title (except Resistance) has done really well on the PS3 due to its weak installed base. :-(

I'm really excited for this. I don't know that much about the comic or anything but I've loved everything I've seen about this in terms of graphics and videos, etc. I love all the darkness powers, and the darklings and tentacles and everything. Looks like it's going to have awesome atmosphere.

I can't wait to play it for myself! How awesome does the multiplayer segment sound?

Starbreeze said they just were not experienced enough with the ps3.

Well the guy said "hmmmmm" like some mystery was getting solved. What was he "hmmmm"ing about?

Motorstorm?

I'm about to look at the Gametrailer preview in 5 minutes.

Fixed.
I downloaded the preview, too and it's very good. But gametrailers.com video quality is really meh.:/

Has it been confirmed that the PS3 version will have bonus content and what that content will be?

Yep, more TV content, for example more episodes of PopEye *uurggh*.

I wish they release a demo in the marketplace, i wish they market the game well.

I want this game to sell well, but i'm very iffy on it. It has the potential to do well...but i don't see the hype, i think they are taking too long to release a demo.

it's because they hit a roadblock with the demo...dunno why

The game doesn't come out for another couple of weeks, they've got plenty of time to get a demo out. (As long as the demo comes out before or soon after the game release, I'll be happy.)

Yeah but releasing a demo close to release hasn't been the marketplace thing...

From what i remember, the most successfull demos on the marketplace were released QUITE a bit before the release of the game.

I dunno, i'm just not feeling it, and my gut feeling is usually pretty good about this stuff. I'm not seeing the hype, but maybe i'm wrong, and the hype is there.

not true....the Dead Rising demo was released like the week right before the game hit retail....and boy did it do wonders....

Yeah, as someone said, there was a cock up with the demo. It's done it's just not out.

I see what you mean. I'm not seeing it either, and just because a niche group of us is on gametrailers watching these great vids doesn't mean anyone else knows what this game is all about. I have yet to see a tv spot for the game and a demo would have to come real soon to generate some word of mouth hype on xbl. I wouldn't care if it were any other game, but nowadays you gotta root for the original IP's.

It also helped that it was the first game in a long dry spell for the 360. People were feening for something to play.

I agree there is a lack of hype for what looks to be a great title. I think it is a new obscure IP (outside of comic book fans) from a relatively obscure developer who's done a great job but their only big previous effort was a great game that was relatively overlooked. But I'm hoping that with a demo and a little bit of a push behind it, the xbox hive will find it and make it a success.

A demo, great reviews, and a little marketing/advertising should ramp up the hype. It just seems like a perfect title for the xbox 360 (and PS3) audience.

Yeah, but those games you mention are just regular, normal games. Just standard action games.

The Darkness is really something special, something more than 'just' an action game.

I really, really hope that Starbreeze gets a LOT OF MONEY and that this game is a multi-million seller because they deserve it so much.

I received the review version (also got a nice t-shirt) for the PS3 and well, of course it's great. :D Don't see any difference with the preview build yet, but I hope this one doesn't freeze at some moment.

write the differences between preview and review if you see them :)

No signs of any reviews yet?

I got NDA until 29 june. I guess the American sites have NDA until 25 june or a bit earlier, the first magazine reviews could be there in a few days.

I asked why would it not be a hit . . . . I didn't ask why will it be a multi-million selling hit. :lol

I guess no one can think of a good reason why it would not sell. The only thing I could come up is that it does have a weird sci-fi/spiritual aspect to it which may be a bit too 'out there' for some people. Maybe some will view it as being too short?

speculawyer said:

Because not enough people buy it?

Seriously though it's tracking great right now. The pre-order numbers are pretty good. I'd be shocked if the game doesn't sell well.

I don't have time to highlight the good points. I gotta get going. Sorry.

They're comparing it to The Suffering in terms of story? I sure hope it's better than that, I don't remember The Suffering as a game with interesting plot.

I like how they're giving the player info about achievements, that's a great idea, but online achievements? I hope it doesn't **** up the online part of the game, like all those nutty achievement hunters did in Gears (when playing ranked games).

Yeah, I just heard some excellent VO. You know what else I heard? The sound of my money hitting the counter. Strange that even though I still have questions about alot of the gameplay (use of Darkness powers specifically) I'm still really hyped for this game.

Excitement growing by the day.

I need something new for my next-gen babies. Halo 3 BETA ended and now I have an empty void in my gaming rotation and The Darkness looks like it's ready to fill that void.

I'm about to watch the IGN Uk footage. BRB with analysis on awesomeness.

EDIT: :lol :lol

The gunplay in this game is so awesome. Decision was made on what platform to buy it on when o buddy walked up behind the guy and did some kinda execution and the 'Achievement Unlocked' bubble popped up:lol . When this happened I knew the 360 version would be miine.

This game is one of the first TRUE next gen games IMO. It looks freaking awsome, oozing style and atmosphere, it's one of those games you can completely immerse yourself in, free roaming the city, storyline, watch TV, phone calls, that sort of thing. It reminds of games like Deus Ex where you kinda do what you want but it's still a big immersive story. If this game is hyped properly and gets reviewed well (It will), it can sell.

But I'm not seeing the hype yet, not enough people haven't jumped on the bandwagon yet or don't know about the game. It's got a real good buzz right now though, and I think it's gonna be a good enough game reviews wise to get serious attention from people.
