The Darkness: The Official Thread

I can't wait for this game to come out. Everything sounds and looks amazing. Just hoping that Chappelle could introduce the game at the start up screen by yelling "Darkness." :lol

It seems like on every page someone asks about a demo. According to what was posted a few pages ago THE DEMO WAS DELAYED to most likely after the release.

Came across the following review here

The format of the website kinda sucks, and the font is extremely small, but the review is pretty much all praise, claiming "The Darkness being hands down the best action experience of 2007 thus far."...

summary stuff:

Graphics: Absolutely eye-popping stuff
Sounds: Mike Patton is the absolute bomb.
Control: Context sensitivity is a little twitchy, but it plays well all-round
Gameplay: The Darkness powers are loads of fun to come to grips with
Verdict: Puts other first-person shooters in the shade
9/10

PLAY magazine UK review (not to be confused with american PLAY)

Review basic points

Gorgeous graphics, great story, gritty atmosphere.

Story is "pretty good" - contains some of the "best twists ever in a videogame".

Some of the lip syncing is out of sync slightly but it is not to noticable.

Instead of load screens Jackie is shown posing or "telling a story about his past" - these take place on the subway train as you travel between levels.

Lots of unlockables including an "entire back catologue of Top Cow comics". Adds great replayability.

Lots of side quests - e.g - collecting change from the subway tracks. Helping a vagrant busk with the harmonica.

Gameplay "should take you around 14 hrs depending on how much you want to see".

Score - 91%

Has anybody else been avoiding media on this game?

I have after I Dl'ed the Gametrailers.com preview and the IGN Insider that was up a few days ago. After seeing those two I have my mind made up that I want the game and therefore don't want to see too much before I buy it..

Anybody else doing the same?

If you're an IGN regular you'll already know all about The Darkness: how Jackie Estacado - the anti-hero in the game - is having the worst day ever, along with the birthday to end all birthdays; his mysterious transformation into a superhero from hell; but, more importantly, you'll know how The Darkness is shaping up to be one of the hottest games of the summer. However, one area of the game that's been quietly lurking in the shadows is the Darklings, the gremlin-like helpers Jackie can call on in his hour of need. We've touched on these little critters in previous impressions of the game but never in much detail - until now. As with the way Jackie eats the hearts of his victims to increase his powers, he also learns how to summon the Darklings as the game progresses, each possessing a unique personality and therefore purpose in the game.

As part of our continued in-depth look at The Darkness, we're unveiling the Darklings for the first time, one by one, starting right here. First up is the Kamikaze Darkling, a fearless little fighter who Jackie can send into a room of bad guys and BLAM!, they're all blown to bits.

The kamikaze has other uses too, like when the way ahead is blocked and Jackie just isn't strong enough to clear the path. No worries - summon the Kamikaze Darkling and he'll scuttle up to the obstacle and nuke it into oblivion. Check out the brand new video in the gallery below and see the Kamikaze Darkling in action.

Tomorrow we'll be sticking another Darkling under the microscope so be sure to check back and witness the Gunner in all its gung-ho glory.

I was pissed when I saw that video - such a wonderfully shocking moment that I should have experienced in-game.

From the earlier review:

and the 1080p visuals are immaculate

Why do reviewers do this? It was a well written review and you can tell they actually played through the game, so why the cocktease? If this game is in fact 1080p natively (there's a 2% chance of this) I may actually pick it up for the PS3 since the hdmi connection would give me 1:1 pixel mapping.

Therein lies the problem of scaling. I've already had a bunch of friends tell me how great their 360 games look in 1080p even though they're 720p native. Although it's good that Darkness for PS3 supports the scaling SDK to people w/ older HDTVs don't have to settle with 480p. Even if the game is rendered at 720p it should still let you get zero over/underscan on HDMI.

I am doing the same, with The Darkness and Bioshock, infact most games I really want I try avoid most spoilers and media about the game.

Latest german news:
the darkness is banned before release due to some swastikas and other german ww2 symbols.

This is not confirmed yet. As it stands, the bannable content is only on a bonus disc, that is just available in the US anyways.
But IF it comes true, even importing it would become illegal...

Bonus disc? WTH? First time I heard of this. Can you give me some info on it?

It's a DVD compilation of babies exploding and people having their heads sawed off.

No, not really. This is the exact wording of the "retailer of my trust".
He´s still pretty sure, that the game will relase in Germany as planned (360 end of June, PS3 end of July).
The USK checked on the game well over a month ago, they gave it an "18 and over" (Keine Jugendfreigabe) tag, and planned to cut it anyway.

So wait...USA gets a bonus disc and Europe doesn't? Or is only Germany excluded?

Indeed I have. Haven't watched a single video since Gametrailers started uploading them. Including the supposedly awesome intro. Although I accidentally read about parts of it. :(

Anyhow, this media blackout became much easier since my PC died and the internet sucks balls of goat on the PS3.

I'm also not watching any Bioshock footage.

Demo delayed to after the game's release, PLAYSTATION 3 version delayed by about a month (of course the PS3 demo will likely be delayed an additional month or at least a few additional weeks) in several territories (mind you this won't do much good to the game sales on PS3 and they did spend some money developing the PS3 version of the game),...

wow, this title is on a roll :(.

Sadly, I just got the confirmation: its banned in Germany. In this case it means, that we are not allowed to buy this game, so you won´t even see import versions here.

Man, its no wonder that publishers treat Europe like the bastard step-child...

There will be a german version. Only the uncut version is banned.

This is one of the reasons why being a European sucks. I really hate the idea that government can and decides to apply this much control over what people might want to get as private citizens, but it seems to be the European way of things...

luckily i have a import shop in netherland who doesn't really care.

*shrugs* Of course they won´t care. I´d just advise to drive to Netherlands, Austria etc instead of letting them mail it...

well, i shit on the german version. instead i'll import the us one.

If you are german, thats illegal. If by chance customs opens it, the police will pay you a visit.
Wow. It's like Germany never left dictatorship behind... didn't know it was THAT bad over there when it comes to game censorship :)

why should i? there are no controls within the eu.

Mail gets checked randomly, Schengen country or not.

It´s the other way round - because of our history, the showing of swastikas is against the constitution, thus automatically illegal.

Really, it does not surprise me that much... sooner or later they will start doing the same in Italy too over more and more games.

Sigh...

I think it is beyond that, even if the game had no swastikas around the big thing here is how government feels it has the right to control its citizens' lives and the use and abuse of paternalistic laws has never left Europe in peace.

Being an European consumer sucks.

I am pretty sure games where in the storyline you play as a Vietnamese dude killing american soldiers it would be banned here. Imagine a game where you play AS the nazis....yikes.

A good American should sue whatever state that enacted such law. Mark the game M, AO, NPS (Not to be Purchased Stupid!), etc... but do not dare to tell people what video games they can play and which ones they cannot play.

We are not talking about selling bazookas to people or legalizing the sale of Cocaine or supporting pedophilia, etc...

heh I just heard a fun little story. My friend made some of the levels too detailed that it chugged the fps down so he had to start all over :lol

yeah he is a perfectionist when it comes to details.
