The Darkness: The Official Thread

I thought using darkness heads to scout would be pretty cool, is it badly implemented or just not your cup of tea?

I can see some people liking it, it works okay but I just don’t like using it. Of course, I am the sort of person who flat-out refuses to use the Snake cam in Rainbow 6 Vegas and just wanted to barge through door after door so I don’t think I had any chance of liking this aspect of the game.

Well that doesn't really answer the question now does it?

This is two different posts with people that have issues with the controls. Based on their own gameplay experiences and not what some guy on the 'net said. That's why I want specific examples of what the problem is.

As for your case, there are people who like/don't mind/don't notice issues with PDZ's controls either. They're wrong.

OK, well, I don't have any specific example of any problem so I can't answer you. :)

Found some new (?) screenshots on The Darkness's official Xbox.com page. I think they are new, at least I haven't seen them before.

That's it. I know nothing about this IP, but all these kickass screens are making me think i'll be picking this up..

Looks pretty unique; going to switch my GRAW2 preorder over to this next week, hopefully it is as good as everyone says so far. Although I am not much of a first-person shooter fan, I need something to play over the summer aside from Ninja Gaiden Sigma. :lol

God WHERE is the demo?
Delayed 'till after the game ships.

Get with the times. :p

I saw "GRAW 2 preorder" and was about to ask how someone still has one for a game released a long-ass time ago. Then saw the Sigma part. lol@me.

damit, when will this come to PC!

Wait, it's not coming for PC?

I had low expectations of this game so its currently blowing me away. Especially with some of the graphics. Can't wait to try this one.

No PC version has been announced. PS3 & xbox 360 only.

Jesus Christ... how many fps does the 360 game run at? And how much with PS3?

I don't care about the visuals, which game runs at higher fps?

UncleGuito said:
They're both the same.
That's 30 constant fps right?

After all the hype you’d be forgiven for thinking there were no more surprises left, but The Darkness throws up a few treats. The inclusion of The Darkness powers and the ability to summon Darklings adds a fresh dimension to the shooter genre, plus the tempo of the action is fast enough to keep you hooked all the way through. It’s a shame the multiplayer games feels so tacked on – although the option to play as a Darkling is neat. Despite this The Darkness is one of the more original shooters of this or indeed any year.

8.5 Presentation
High production values means The Darkness is at times almost movie-like. No visible interface is a nice touch too.
8.0 Graphics
It looks state-of-the art, but not quite as gory as you might imagine - apart from the heart-devouring, that is.
7.5 Sound
Yadda-yadda New Yoik accents can grate a bit, but the hilariously over-the-top voice of The Darkness adds to the atmosphere.
8.5 Gameplay
The controls are somewhat unwieldy at first but not so much as they break the game. Darkness powers provide a fresh angle on a tired genre.
8.0 Lasting Appeal
You could probably tear though it in a couple of days, plus multiplayer adds longevity.
8.5 OVERALL
Great

I didnt know Garth Ennis helped with this? How much involvement did he have? Did he right alot of the script because if so, I have to get this game. Garth Ennis are one of the few comic book writers that have amazing style.

Wow, what a shamefully bad written review... I'm highlighting some parts:

The game as a whole is riddled with strange attempts at comedy, which are sometimes incongruous given the underlying themes of demonic possession and eternal damnation.
Ehm, that's like saying: when you got one theme, you are not allowed to put in humour. I think the humour in Max Payne 2 was brilliant and fitted exactly in the game, as it does in The Darkness.
Even weirder are the almost Shenmue-like levels of irrelevance, particularly as regards television. There's an early sequence where Jackie visits his girlfriend's flat, and they both sit on the sofa and start watching telly. She refuses to let him have the remote control and unless you storm out immediately you are forced to watch the best part of the opening hour of seminal racial drama To Kill A Mocking Bird, starring Gregory Peck. While it's undeniably a moving film, you have to question whether this is the time and the place, particularly as once it's started you can't get up, and have no choice but to restart from the previous checkpoint. On the plus side, it's probably the ten easiest Achievement Points you'll ever earn.
Ehm, irrelevance? :lol What about storytelling? These are great, ingame ways to tell the story. And it's laughable that he says you have to reset the checkpoint. There's just an option to stand up during sitting there. And it's a great way of pacing. Without such sequences the game would be only brainless murder, now it's murder with a GREAT storyline and emotional involvement.
The madness continues when you slaughter a roomful of mob guys using your tentacles and pet goblins, then calmly sit down and watch the original black & white version of Flash Gordon. You can also pick up a phone, dial a random number and get an earful of abuse. This sort of thing suggest either that Starbreeze has an eye for detail, or that they finished the bulk of the game some time ago and have been desperately passing the time. Either way, it gives the game a near unprecedented level of quirkiness.
What a load of crap, excuse me... It's just a nice and great feeling for detail and polish. Without all this kind of stuff the game would feel much more 'empty'.
As for the main action, visually and stylistically, the closest comparison on 360 is probably Condemned, although The Darkness is nowhere as psychologically terrifying. Perhaps due to the ludicrous scenario and over-the-top voice acting it simply isn't scary, and the main sensation it induces is panic as you desperately try to run for cover with your ridiculous tentacles flapping all over the place.
Ehm, calling the scenario ludicrous is like calling the scenario of Halo or Resistance or whatever fictional game ludicrous. The storyline is worked out really, really great, period. And ehm, the voice-acting is not over-the-top and the game was never meant to be scary. What kind of bullshit comments are these? It just seems like the pure, personal opinion of a guy who doesn't like the demonic element and because of that criticizes the game. That's sad.
In fact it's actually as much a love story as a horror story, although this rapidly changes when you get shot and wake up in the trenches of World War I. No kidding, one minute you're having a stand-off with your uncle Paulie, the next you're chasing a Nazi with a nasty case of trench foot. This sizeable twist is apparently in the comics, and is supposed to represent hell on earth, enabling you to come closer to the mystery of just why you have half an octopus on your back.
I'm wondering if this guy even continued playing after getting in the Otherworld because the hole twist is worked out masterfully.

I think this guy completely misses the point of the game and criticizes purely based on his subjective liking of the story without judging the game properly. 8,5 is a good score but the review is a shame.

At the very least he wrote the prequel books to the game, I would imagine he had extensive input on the game at the very least as it is (partly) his property.

I just want him to write another Punisher game for the guys at Volition, screw the movie sequel if Tom Jane isn't involved.

Seriously the first punisher run he did before they went Max comics were Gold. Some of the most hilarious and twisted dark humor ever.

That IGN review was very weird. It had a lot of negativism that didn't get reflected in the score. The 1UP review was the same.

Pretty sure he helped write the game. I want to say Jimmy Palmiotti helped too, but I might be thinking of The Punisher game. I know Ennis worked on The Darkness game, though.

Seem to be a trend in reviews these days. I'm wondering why they do a write-up at all on some of these titles when in the end, they're just gonna say, "Eh, it feels like an 8.5."

Okay, just did a little re-search and it looks like the primary comic consultant guy was Paul Jenkins. Not too bad as long as they don't throw Jackie in a walking Iron Maiden and make his powers reliant on Sadomasochism.

:)

Which means they could have just ****ing made Preacher instead of the stupid ****ing Darkness. Don't get me wrong, I love me some comics, but ****ing Preacher.

So its state-of-the-art, but it gets an 8.0..... IGN's logic never ceases to amaze me.

A Preacher game would only be good with a Daisy Cunnilingus Mini-Game, as 1/4th of the whole book is Jesse going down on her.

Should end up a fun game.

:)

What kind of game would Preacher be though? I mean the occasional bar brawl and telling people what to do.

Unless you played as Cassidy.

Or the Saint of Killers! :D

Whoa, a Tom Jane fan? I actually knew him growing up, he's a good guy. Because we hung out with him we followed his career from his days doing beer commercials. He's come a long way.

Not anymore and I'm pretty sure Paul Jenkins was the only one involved in writing for the game. Ennis used to write for the comic way back in the day though.
