The Darkness: The Official Thread

Whoa, a Tom Jane fan? I actually knew him growing up, he's a good guy. Because we hung out with him we followed his career from his days doing beer commercials. He's come a long way.

Playing Frank Castle and marrying Patricia Arquette should be enough for any man but he also got to appear in Arrested Development and make the awesome Stander movie! The bastard.

I'm sorry, but without reading through this entire thread, can someone quickly sum up for me:

Which version is better (ie which should I get) - 360 or PS3?

I believe the 360 is the lead platform so am I best getting that? What are the graphics/frame rate like on the PS3 version?

I don't think anyone really knows. Most dual-format reviews haven't mentioned the differences, if any. I don't think they'll be that vast or they would (hopefully) have been highlighted.

The blu-ray benefits are minimal, and you'll miss out on Achievements (if that's your thing) - regardless of which the lead platform was. I don't have any choice, mind...

Thanks for that. I'm really looking forward to getting this :)

In a year absolutely crammed with interesting-looking first-person shooters, you've got to come up with a game of extraordinary quality to rise above the competition. The Darkness has come along at simultaneously the best- and worst-possible time: on the one hand, it has arrived before it risked being drowned out in a fiercely competitive market, full of games claiming to be the Next Big Thing; on the other, it might well suffer from people holding off for what else is coming out. For what it's worth, I'd concur with Rob and suggest that any fan of first-person shooters needs to play this game, even though the occasional duff level disrupts the quality at times. Once The Darkness gets its tentacles around you, resistance is futile.

sounds good imo...

The Darkness PS3 delayed

2K Games has confirmed to Eurogamer that the PlayStation 3 version of The Darkness has been delayed until July in Europe.

Retailers are reporting 20th July, but, despite initially confirming that, 2K has said the current target is simply "July".

The Xbox 360 version is still down for release on 29th June, mind you, and you can read our review of that by clicking on the blue words.

Good review, got the same score as my other purchase this week Overlord so thats a good sign.

Seems a shame about the otherworld sections being sub par as they looked really cool.

Yeah, Amazon.co.uk has it (EU PS3 version) as July 20th as well now. (Darkness vs SingStar that day, potentially if SingStar isn't a August release instead as rumored lately)

Eurogamer review 8/10.

while the ability to sit down and watch entire movies (like Flash Gordon, The Street Fighter, various cartoons and music videos) is one of those moments you'll pull a friend in from another room to giddily exclaim: "look!" It's fairly meaningless in terms of the game, but simply fantastic that we've reached a stage where long-form, real-life movies can be chucked into a videogame as a bonus.

And developers said they'll pack blu-ray with lot more of these. Shit, I think I hold off till PS3 version. Oh and it's bizzare situation. Some shops in poland show the changed the release date for 20 july, others for 6-7 july. I can wait till 7... I think.

It's great that they only said "July" this could mean only slight delay.

Apparently it's taking longer to get through SCEE's more stringent approval process, despite being given the green flag by SCEA. PS3 (and PS2 etc) games require approval by their individual publishers, rather than Microsoft's all in one deal.

Shame.

The Darkness supports the PS3-equivalent of Achievements. They're called Accomplishments or Trophies or whatever.

I'm not so sure about that, the rumor started from one source at one point (was it 1up?) and then it snowballed and I've yet to see the developers comment on that. Lair is still the first announced game to use it.

And in any case, if Darkness does indeed have Home trophies & items I don't think they will be 'unlocked' before you install Home or whatever future firmware.

Just import the game from VG+ instead of paying an extra 50% and having to wait til July.

Huh?

The Darkness PS3 is £29.99 on online retailers (see shopto.net), but would work out at a total of £37 to import it from VG+, and that excludes potential customs duty. Now that it's been delayed on PS3 I'll probably get the 360 version after all.

That IGN review got me mad... so mad! In fact the review is impossible to read without wanting to launch A GUNNER on the guy... Did I mention I <3 Gunners!!!

IGN confirmed it.

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/789/789233p1.html

I don't know how they'll handle it. Just as long as they handle it.

The "achievements" in The Darkness could be the same as the "achievements" in Resistance. Nothing seems to be pointing that these will be integrated into Home's trophy system.

Since the game comes out today in the USA can people who have played both the PS3 and 360 versions state clear differences apart from full length movies because if the PS3 version has more proper content (im not interested in watching movies in game) then I will import that version.

Well shopto is a bit of an anomaly there, I don't think anyone's price matching them.

If anyone wants to pick up the American PS3 version, it's going for £30.99 at www.movietyme.com with free delivery.

That's really good for an Eurogamer FPS review.

I still think they're too hard on it. They are absolutely right about the lack of a believable city environment, but they're wrong about the Otherworld, the Creeping Dark and the AI imo.

Yeah, the Otherworld is sometimes a bit too open but it perfectly feels like hell and has a fan-tas-tic atmosphere. It's just something completely different and it just really works in the game a s a great twist.

Yeah, Creeping Dark doesn't alway do exactly as you wish (creeping over bodies, right direction) but the way they state it, it is as if it's a very big problem that ruins the mechanic, but it isn't.

The AI is not FEAR indeed, but that's because FEAR has the best FPS-AI ever. But it does it's job, it works in the game.

Anyway, I'm still wondering why they gave EDF a 9, even if I haven't played that game...

I'm gonna need you to confirm this at least a dozen more times.

Lol not quite we need someone who has played BOTH versions to confirm this for us, so far i don't think anyone on here has played both versions.

from what i understand the "accomplishments" in the darkness are not the items that will be going into your home trophy room ala Lair. They are basically implemented just like Resistance's accomplishments where you can only view them from within the Darkness game.

So, is the 360 version region free or not? Really considering picking up this game as it looks like it might become this summer's biggest blockbuster.

The pal version is.

Waiting to see if Play-Asias version is before placing an order.

I want someone to compare the framerate and textures of the PS3/X360-versions

If the Ps3 version holds up I will maybe import it..

I totaly agree with the eurogamer review and you are way to forgiving, personally they rated the game too high. I cannot forgive starbreeze for this game, it feels limited and has stup ai and gamemechanics. The otheworld is just plain bad. Darknesspowers are limited and the creeping dark controls are horrible, unless there is a cute scene and all of a sudden yoor character does crazy shit. The GFX are nice though with some rough spots here and there.

Tell me more of these cute scenes I've heard so much about

So which system do I buy this for?

There are almost both exactly the same graphically so it is down to which controller you prefer, if you care about achievements / accomplishments or if you can get one slightly cheaper than the other.

this is one of those games that the achievements actually deter me from buying the game. I despise how multiplayer-oriented they are. I could care less about the gamerscore I get, but I care about my achievement completion %, and i dont like being forced to play online to get them.. especially with the amount of poorly designed online xbox games

i still need confirmation about 360 verison having AA while PS3 verions has no AA.

I want to get it for ps3 because i like the sharpness of HDMI but i do not want extra Jaggies.

I've yet to see that confirmed, but if it's true, I wonder if that means the PS3 version will prominently feature AF like with Oblivion.

see this is why we need reviewers to step up their game when it comes to multiplatform titles, why should i even have to sacrifice even 1% of performance due to not knowing which version is better.

Cmon guys help us multiplatform owners out.

An 8/10 too high for The Darkness? :lol :lol

Feels limited? What do you mean? You can handle every situation in the game the way you like, with a lot of options open for you: gunplay, darklings, creeping dark. Limited is TOTALLY the different word for this, really.

Stupid AI? Ehm, first of all the AI is never ever dumb or something like that. And well, they search for cover and hunt you down when you retreat, so that's ok. Can you give any example of the stupid AI anyway?

Stupid game mechanics?? :lol :lol You're really going too far here man. And also, you just say it and don't give any examples.

Ehm, the Otherworld is not bad. Yes, in the beginning you're searching a bit where to go and they could have handled it better, but from the allied village on it's just great, fantastic, atmospheric.

Darkness powers limited? Well, you can't move planets and such, like Starbreeze wanted first, if that's what you mean. And Creeping Dark has some minor issues but overall it's great. I use it a lot to scout ahead and sneak up to enemies. It's so satisfying.

Really, I think it must suck to dislike a game like this so much. Is it just that you don't like the genre or what? I can't think of any other rating than 9/10 for this game. It has a few minor issues but overall it's a wonderful, atmospheric, polished, satisfying, GREAT action game. And I actullay think that most of NeoGAF will think the same when they get the game.

i'm almost embarrassed to admit it, but it's one of the reasons i'm an IGN insider subscriber... the head 2 head articles.

don't worry though, i share the info rather than keeping it to myself like a dousche.

they haven't done one for The Darkness yet though.
