The Darkness: The Official Thread

I just got a call from GameStop, telling me I can pick it up tomorrow. No point really, since my console is at the repair center. But I've paid Darkness off, and GameStop won't honor a preorder after 48 hours, right? Might as well just go pick it up.

Opening = pure badass. The videos were awesome but up close, in HD...man that shit was intense. I also really like the menus. (spoilered just in case)
They're the tentacles moving around and pulsating, with the menu text casting shadows on them
. More to come.

Starting with VF5, there have been several 720p native games that can be upscaled to 1080i/p. The Darkness is one of them.

Do i have to do anything special? I was just playing it the other day and it was still in 720p.

Well VF5 will only output in 1080i/p if you have disabled the 720p output option in your XMB (this was done basically so that older HDTVs that don't support 720p can still get 1080i instead of 480p). NGS is a 720p native game, but it will upscale to 1080p if it detects that your HDTV supports 1080p. There's no standard to how games scale on the PS3. Devs seem to be utilizing the scaling SDK in the manner they choose.

this game has some great texture work

okay hil-ign doesn't seem to like the game at all and will give it around 7-8 based on his comments :/

7.9 confirmed!!!!!!!!

Something like that. The game is really cool. But it fails in areas where Riddick (and many other FPS') have succeeded. Play the first 2 hours and you will think it's a godsend to gaming. But that love affair doesn't last. and the last level is a rip off.

It seems that all he do is comparing it to riddick. Newsflash, this isn't riddick...poor starbreeze.

The game certainly does have some damn fine texture work, I found myself staring at jackets of all things while talking to someone in the Canal Street subway station. So far, I'm really enjoying the game. Combat seems similar to Riddick with the whole laser sight thing. The aiming feels pretty loose but when you zoom (click right thumbstick) it gets a lot better. Sensitivity is, of course, adjustable in the menus. There's no button for melee combat unless you're holding a two handed weapon. When you're dual wielding, the only time you'll melee is if you're out of ammo. As far as the AI is concerned, it's been a little spotty so far. In the opening sequence, I found guys who would wait for me to come around the corner to shoot them as well as other's who would move around and find cover. Speaking of the game's opening sequence, it is absolutely incredible and very cinematic. I seriously found myself tense and on the edge of my seat, hopefully that'll keep up for most of the game. I've already
gotten my darkness powers as well as creeping dark and beserker. The game hit a whole new level of brutality once I got those, man is it ever violent
. I think for now I'm gonna take a break and maybe go back in later but I'm definitely looking forward to that.

thanks for the impressions, it seems that this is one of those games that are either loved or hated.

Well as far as Hillary's comments go, I'm still not out of the first two hours so anything can still happen. Having said that, I think this game would have to go downhill pretty badly to not still be a damn fine game.

dunno what's wrong with Hilary. He has thrashtalked the game in several IGN threads already and that before even reviewing it. Maybe starbreeze ran over his dog or something.

must rent before blind buying. The EGM live podcast pointed out flaws that would annoy me too.

there are people who loved this game also, and you listen to the negative ones only?

Yeah some opinions from a no name site just made it a rental for you? What about all the really positive press? From more notable critics.

Sometimes I think there should be term year limits on game reviewers. They just start hating games. =(

i'm thinking maybe my tastes don't line up so well with tom chick, the guy who wrote that review of the darkness. his top ten games of last year list is dotted with stuff i thought was pretty broken and boring.

i still may play it safe and rent before buying, though.

First time I read something by that guy. I can't believe people use him as a dealbreaker. Ridicilous if true. Wait for gamespot review.

regardless of the sites if the complaints are valid than they would annoy me too. The dude on EGM really was making Valid points.

Ok, so because YOU haven't read anything by him, nobody should value his opinion?

Don't want to play with fire? Stay out of the kitchen.

Seriously though there is bound to be some negative press. It's impossibleto appeal to everyone.

I wouldn't use him as a dealbreaker. His review isn't any better than 1ups because more than half of it he spends talking about riddick when he is reviewing the darkness.

This is sarcasm right? Doesn't matter what thread you step in around here, your going to get some shit on your shoe. No big deal though, if you like it, you like it.

we cant really use your opinion either since you admit to being bias because a friend is working on the game also really you didnt complain about using Mesijs as a deal maker eventhough i really have not heard of him before.

ah that's fair Iam biased, but mesijs has explained way more of the game than TC did.

yeah because Tom Chick's reviews are always used as base here at gaf *rolleyes*
I'm sorry but how about we look somewhere else than a possible Gerstmann review.... I wasn't stating that Chicks review was good rather that if its Gerstmann its likely not to be any better.

Closing Comments
The Darkness is a wonderfully gruesome adventure. There are some truly dark and even shocking moments in the story. There's a twist at the end of the first chapter that shook me a bit. And though the story does lose its way and makes little sense towards the end, it's still a fun ride. It's too bad that the AI and gameplay mechanics couldn't be smoothed out a bit more to match the impressive visual presentation. There's a lot to like about The Darkness, even if it doesn't fully come together in the end. With so few gaming options in the summer, this is certainly a title worth buying. Just don't expect a revolutionary experience.

9.0 Presentation
The Darkness' strength is in its packaging. The menus are slick, the cut-scenes are stylish, and the atmosphere is perfectly moody.
8.0 Graphics
Some nice effects and a solid framerate are a plus. The Otherworld is particularly cool. The animations in general are weak, though.
8.5 Sound
This is some of the best voice acting on 360 to date. The sound effects and music are fairly average by comparison.
7.5 Gameplay
It's fun to kick ass and take names. It would be nice if the AI and enemies matched the slick presentation.
7.5 Lasting Appeal
The campaign will take 8-10 hours. The multiplayer won't keep you playing much longer than that.

7.8
Good OVERALL

Awesome. I got the call from Gamestop. Should be in early tomorrow.

Now this is my kind of guy. Despite the gloom and doom, the most important thing is "when is that bitch in the store so I could get to killing?"

See this I don't get. If they're using the same story from the Novel, the story should make perfect sense. Unless Starbreeze added elements to the story that weren't there, I don't see how the story "makes little sense towards the end."
