The Darkness: The Official Thread

Cool. I'll be over here, playing the game. Lemme know when you figure out which one has the best durp mapping or whatever.

stop being stupid. When you have both consoles why not get the version that is superior?
I would feel bad buying a version of a game knowing that i just got the inferior version when i could have gotten the superior version for the same price. Even if it is only a minimal difference.

from what i've gathered... graphically the 360 version is better... for extras the ps3 version is better...

so which one is "the best" one? i dunno!

I'm very happy for you. At least I know I have the patience to wait and make the right decision with my $65. The game's not going anywhere :)

Well as far as I'm concerned it's pretty clear the 360 version has the edge, so what's the problem?

Yeah, I think this was resolved like 4 pages ago, the people still complaining must only own a PS3.

I haven't seen it anywhere yet, but is there a detailed list of the video bonuses that each version has? All I've seen is vague descriptions (More music videos, etc...)

To each his own I guess. It's been said and rehashed, and buried, then resurrected. There's plenty of videos online and tons of people in the thread giving their impressions. If you haven't chosen which version to go with by now, you either just came into this thread, or you enjoy beating dead horses.

Playing the PS3 version. Picked it up from BB for fitty dolla with price match. First "full" retail price game I've bought since God of War 2 and MotorStorm back in March.

First thing I did was pop online to check the MP. Totally unplayable with the lag so no real impressions there. Maybe I'll try again later with different settings.

Booted up the game and it took me about a half hour or so to get the sensitivity settings close enough to what I wanted. I'm enjoying it so far. I don't think I'm very far in. I just met the butcher guy, and the story really has me intrigued.
It's saying something when I actually want to sit on the couch and watch a movie with Jenny. Oddly compelling.

Starting the game almost felt like I was missing some back story. Is that filled in during the game, did I miss something, or are they in the comics or unlockable stuff?

Still trying to get a feel for the game but I still really need to tweak the settings to get the controls right. Until I figure that out and get a little further into the game, I don't want to give any premature impressions of the gameplay. It's definitely a quality title. I just can't say to what degree yet.

The concept of accomplishments is interesting. I think it will encourage me to play through the game a couple of times but that's a pretty damn huge list. You'd think they'd try to pare it down so they felt more like real accomplishments rather than stuff you would do naturally over the course of the game, like eating 50 hearts, meh.

EDIT: Watching the preview videos with the jerky hand animations was kind of distracting. Sad to see that in the final game.

That's because they just took the 360 Achievements and moved them over.

when i'm riding in the turret in the otherworld, how the f*** do i kill this big monster with the butthole for a mouth that is shaking me around?

n/m, got it

Can you point me to one high quality vid of the PS3 version? Every vid I've seen so far is of the 360 version :( I just want to see the dang PS3 game in motion to decide for myself how severe or negligible the 2 versions really are.

its not really as negligible as you think. 360 version looks much smoother than the ps3 version.

Having played this at a friend's house this afternoon, I've really enjoyed it. But am I crazy in thinking that Condemned actually looks a bit better? I'm really surprised Starbreeze (of all devs) couldn't do more with next-gen hardware.

Condenmed look better to me but the scope was smaller less enemies and carnage too you cant really compare them

Heh, you should see the new screens of Condemned 2 in the latest OXM. If you thought the first was impressive just you wait.

Don't tease me, you fool. :D

That might be my most-anticipated game, even with all the blockbuster titles on the horizon.

Page 8/9, few details thrown in, just got mine in today, August issue.

has anyone listened to the egm podcast where donahoe tries to defend his review? it's a joke. i couldn't believe it. critics seem to be focusing on the fact that jackie can't remember where his girlfriend lives, but always gloss over the fact that his girlfriend just got a new apartment and hasn't even unpacked. durrrrr

he also seems to have totally neglected his info screen, where any and all sidequests and their connected characters are explained pretty easily

There's a couple buried in this thread, but I have no clue where. I would say trust Kabuki and Dark 10x (who returned his PS3 copy for a 360 copy) considering neither of them has an agenda. I have both systems (I own the 360 version) and I played my brother's PS3 copy. I think the 360 has the clear advantage as far as graphical effects are concerned, if you really care about the extra TV content then go with the PS3. To be honest, I'm taking the game real slow and just admiring the little things, and I don't really find the T.V. interesting unless it's affecting the situation at hand i.e. breaking news.

...well...its Michael Donahoe.......more importantly, its EGM* Live....

for what its worth....I traded my PS3 copy as well for the 360 sku

...only advantage with PS3 is one I would hardly be using (watching the TV for hours on end)

If you only have a PS3 and want this game. It's definitely worth it. Graphics, textures, framerate are all great. No complaints here on a technical level.

So, just ran into Vinny Mortarello and his lipsynching is superb. Wonder what happened with the other NPCs?

It's a full movie? So that Golden Arm show I saw in the subway, if I stayed, that would've been a full show?

I... I bow to Starbreeze.

(press A)

The more I play the more I like the good stuff and am able to ignore the not so good stuff. :)

I love Kirk Acevedo's voice work on Jackie, recognized him from Oz straight away but until I looked it up I actually thought he was one of the other inmates on the show. In fact, all the VA is good to great so far. Wish Jackie's facial model was a bit more mobile, it's a bit distracting at times but oh well. And even from reading the comics I always thought the character design for Jackie was pretty weak, but that's nothing to do with the game as the story here is pretty good so far.

90ish minutes in I think it's a very good new-gen effort for Starbreeze.

Have to admit, I would read Chakra Assassin

You're going to have to explain this...how exactly would the CPU (Cell) assist with motion blurring?
Most realtime-motionblur approximations use techniques equivalent to, or based on what is used in photoshop style programs . Essentially it's a matter of "painting" the pixels based on their velocity vectors after image has been rendered - a post-process which can be done on a fast CPU just as well as on GPU.

I disagree about MB being something that is easy to "tack-on" though - on any hw . These techniques are still expensive for modern rendering hw, have many tradeoffs and considerations that affect visual results, and their suitability can vary a lot with different implementations of rendering pipeline.

So I'm in
Hell
right now and it's not nearly as bad as people were saying it was. I actually think its pretty integral to the story so far but I haven't completed it yet.

So I beat this game an hour ago, the ending was a bit "meh". Not bad but not great.

Overall I'd probably give the game an 8, its solid but isn't quite up there with Riddick. I don't feel like going into why that is, but lets just say I agree with some of chespace's points in this thread.

They were probably my favorite parts of the game. I didn't get the criticism either.

Integral to the story, yes. But it is still the low point of the game for me. I think someone already mentioned it a few pages back, but I'm getting a Deus Ex vibe while in the subway collecting side missions. Which is funny since I'm currently replaying DX again.

Also, throwing cars and dumpsters at enemies(and pedestrians) never gets old. :lol

Gutted gaf, i was lead to think that there was no gfx difference with these so went for the ps3 version because i have nothing to play on the black box. Now you are telling me the 360 version looks better argggghhhhhhhhh.:lol

I wish a developer could jump in here and explain why. I guess the ram on the xbox360 was able to add some aa without barely any cost. Motion blur tho?

Alright so now I'm kind of angry,
where is that man on the cross?
Go through the gate across the bridge in town. You are gonna need to use the demon arm to get the bell out of the way to enter the area. Once you're at the field, just keep walking straight. Go to the top of the hill and you'll see it and he'll start talking to you.

The biggest problem I see in all of this is that the devs and media led everyone to believe that the two games were the same except for the extra content. Hell, the reviews don't even point out the reduced AA and lack of MB. Pretty rediculous IMO.

Makes no difference to me since I got the X360 version, but this is something that should have been made known a long time ago.

Well most of the time if you talk about stuff like that here its perceived as trolling by some (or better yet, part of some massive conspiracy to counteract the positive sony news :lol) and you get banned or get a thread edit/cat spammage. For example... http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=167031

As for the gaming media. I have no idea why it wasnt mentioned. Maybe they only played one version.

This is easily the greatest game I've played this year.

I just want to know one thing and that is how close am I to finishing the game for those that have finished it. I just started the part where it is set in what looks to be WW1. Do I have a long ways to go before finishing the game? I don't want to rush through the game is the reason I ask.

Yes there's still a lot of gameplay left. The game is quite meaty if you take your time, I didn't rush through the SP and did a few sidequests (about 4 or 5 of them) and it took me a good 15 hours to get through.

so far this game is great, finding where you need to go is easy, the only thing I do kinda wish is when your in a gun fight and you have a square area you can walk around in, I wish those heads besides you would look where your supposed to go, but subways are easy to navigate.

I kinda wish there was a GTA game done like this, I like how it feels like a real world (in the subways and buildings atleast, outside is a ghost town).

and can you change channels on TV?
