The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Console Performance discussion

Took some of those NowGamer pics and compared their full size versions. Take them with a grain of salt. Also the Brightness looks off on the PS3, or maybe the lighting is worse...dunno.

Wouldn't it be worthwhile for people to post what hardware they're using? I've never had a crash bug in New Vegas on my slim 360, but it crashed three times in the first 20 hours on my old Elite.

It's also made a difference on Fifa 12 and Dead Rising 2 (slow menus in both games on Elite) but for obvious reasons this is less relevant.

When I get it I'm willing to install it on both and see what the first few hours are like on each anyway.

Looks like they need to adjust the brightness on the PS3 version via the ingame menu. Otherwise the only really noticeable difference I'm seeing offhand is that tower in the bottom picture seems a bit sharper in the PS3 pic.

I think its the other way round.
edit: the bricks look higher res on the 360 shot
or the texture on his sword sheath

Gah, this 360 texture bug sounds annoying.

I had planned on getting Skyrim for 360, but now I'll be second guessing myself. PS3 is an option as well, though with such a long game, I'd rather have the option of party chatting with my bros.

Wow, the camera on the 4s is fucking amazing.

Edit: Im getting the PS3 version. Looks like its inferior but as long as it doesnt run like shit Ill be fine.

So another day has gone by and we are no closer to determining a cause, solution, or getting a statement from Bethesda other than "we're looking into it?" Awesome.

Just got back from dinner a little while ago.

Me and a friend booted the game back up, he started playing and decided to fast travel (the jerk) and bam! Blurry signs, shield looks like shit, blurry road signs. Nasty.

We rebooted the game, still no good. So we deleted the install, reinstalled, and now it all looks normal again. No fast travel for me I guess....lol

As always better wait for the game of the year edition. Shame for Bethesta they had a lot of time to develop this game , I wonder how a company like this cuould had survive on PS1/N64 era when you did no have online patches....Online has made lazy some developers

The scope of this game is enormous compared to anything from that era (or most anything from this era, for that matter).

This coming from someone who will probably wait awhile before picking up the game.

It is somewhat baffling that Bethesda didn't catch this.

That being said, there's a mountain of good stuff to this game that far outweighs the bad. Texture issue shouldn't dissuade anyone previously interested from jumping in. Just my two cents.

Anyone been watching the Giantbomb stream? I've seemed to notice some pretty bad textures even through the poor quality. Pretty concerning, but hopefully it's an easy fix.

Yeah I watched it for a while at times I actually thought it looked worse than Fallout 3, but hard to tell in a stream like that.

I had the 360 version on preorder then switched to PS3 when I found out about the textures and now I'm not sure if I should keep it or not. Picking it up at GS tonight and deciding on whether to switch back to 360 since it seems like a fix may be in the works.

Interesting, never seen a console performance topic before. It makes sense for PC since you can actually do something about it. Guess this just amounts to PS3 or 360.

Still doesn't excuse this bug. Bugs that I think are acceptable in this type of game is more like random npc's screwing up or items being aligned wrong.

It isn't like it affects EVERY texture, just like a table or a chair or a wall or a rug or an NPC's pants... stuff like that.

Someone in this thread it's also happening to the PS3 version.

Beth knows. The excellent stilloutweigh the not-so-good. let it not bring us down.
thumbs up

I seriously probably wouldn't even notice half this texture/resolution crap if I never came on GAF and had people point it out to me.

PS3 Version:
-Very bad framerate in the first areas of the game, it gets better but it's still janky
-Controls feel a little bit iffy, unresponsive and slow
-The lighting seems almost too harsh, some areas are very dark (you can adjust the brightness though)
-The shadows are hilariously bad and pixelated
-A combination of crisp textures and flat textures, a real mixed bag here
-Major pop in
-Small freezing on autosaves, the time varies - the first time it froze for about 10 seconds

So yeah, not great. But, the art style, music and general atmosphere does save it
From what i hear PS3 has better frame rate.

So USB installs fix the 360 texture popping issue ?
weird, wouldn't the onboard HDD be faster for streaming stuff ..

ah well .. bathesda i guess.

Boy this brings back those days in early 2006 when playing Oblivion I was always worried about freezing/red rings. At least now I don't have to worry about my Xbox breaking and just wait for a patch.

Interesting...

The suggested fix there is to install it to a USB stick, which is what I would do on my 360 anyway. (4GB slim with a 16GB USB stick.)

Admittedly, PS3 is my console of choice though so if they are close in quality PS3 would be tempting... I have the 360 version on pre-order because I figured it would be the better version by default.

My actions guide by the same thought.

It makes me wonder how Bethesda seemed to miss something so major before the game went gold.

... sigh... seems like the best way to play a Bethesda RPG is to get the "GoTY" edition a year later when they are done with all their patches.

*not port begging*

All this discussion makes me wonder if they will put Skyrim on Vita.
The smaller screen and flash media might help with some of these problems?

Depends entirely on where you are in their route. No one here would know.

Yep you'll never know what time they drop off a package. It has to do with where you are on the route, how busy it is that day, what the driver feels like doing, etc. Ive gotten packages at 10am and 7pm before.

I know bethesda signed onto the whole Vita wagon and that would majorly rule but who knows.

UPS set a personal record for me today — my MGS HD Collection LE was delivered at 8:30PM. Hopefully Skyrim shows up a little bit earlier than that tomorrow...

360 seems to have softer shadows. Maybe too soft, but I think I like it better. PC version also has really lousy looking shadows even at the highest settings btw

Jesus, I got Fallout 3 on the PS3 the day it came out and I don't remember any goofy bugs or issues..

Edit: Coworker reminded me of the autosave caused lag spikes, so the fix was to disable autosave in the options and that made it smooth.

I got Fallout 3 and Oblivion day one on PS3 as well, easily put well over 200 hours into both and never experienced any game breaking bugs. Luck of the draw?

Either way, I have no choice. I'll be picking up the PS3 version in just over 5 hours. And then retreating into man cave to play all night, and all day tomorrow.

Releasing games on a Friday makes so much sense, can anyone tell me why they're released on Tuesday's instead?
