The Evil Within PC Performance Thread

any of those FOV they suggest (2 or 1.8) work to reduce the bars, or for now all we should use is the 60fps unlock?

huge bummer if true, my rig is similar to yours.

guess it's finally time to build a new pc.

I got past the first area and it runs really close to 30fps now (it dips to 29 every couple of seconds but otherwise it's playable I guess - although, I've just been in indoor environments so far, maybe once I go outside again the framerate will get murdered again). The game doesn't seem to be GPU bound, changing the settings doesn't do anything, the average frametime remains identical really. Might be my CPU :/

I'm also getting frame rate stutters on my 980. I'm playing at 1440p, max everything except AA which I turned off, 60fps. Vram usage is 2gigs. The game looks great.

I can't get the console commands to come up. I put the +com_allowconsole 1 in the steam launch settings for Evil Within, but nothing comes up when I hit the key.

They remove the bars by cropping the image. I posted a comparison a page back. Bit shit really.

oh well, they dont bother me much in the videos, so im hoping they wont bother me much playing. This is one of those games I really dont want to wait for patches to play, I wanna play it later today

The only thing I noticed was distracting texture streaming. Every time the camera shifts in a cutscene all the textures look like mud for about .5 seconds.

ugh, so another great game ruined for me by idtech texture pop ins. thanks, that's why I didn't preorder.

well that first stealth part was a pain in the ass,

i unlocked the fps and im playing around 60fps fluctuacting between 50s to 70s
but i turned off the AA and the SSAO

my specs are
AMD a10-5700 @ 3.4 GHz
amd radeon 9750 HD 3GB
8GB of RAM

Turned down all the available options on my GTX 650 SC 2gb/i7 2600 and I'm getting sub-20 fps. Running windowed at 1600x900 aswell. Really want to play but its running like garbage. Now the game refuses to get past the Bethesda opener. I wish I could get a refund. This is terrible.

So far the stuttering, which is present even when I'm reaching 60fps, is pretty bad, to the point where I'm just playing at 30 (which is perfectly paced at least).

I wonder if the lack of a true full screen mode is the culprit. Maybe Aero off would give me screen tearing but more consistent frame pacing. I'll play around more when it's not so late.

I can imagine how Tango/Bethesda were reasoning behind this.

"The community will take care of the PC-version, don't worry".

Protip: don't give these people money.

50-70 fps

Max setting (is that all? I see no option for textures)
No stuttering.

780ti
3570k
8gb

Only problem I have is the character is too close.

780, 4670, 16 gigs ram all stock

used the fps unlock and "R_forceaspectratio 2". it zooms in the FOV a bunch, but the bars were driving me nuts and i found this to be an acceptable in between.

intro outside in the rain was dropping to 50 some and i was concerned, but since i got inside its been fine, 60 fps on the button with very few drops.

worth noting - when this game is booting up, if i press ANY button on my keyboard or mouse it crashes. took me a few minutes to figure out what was causing it...need to wait until i get to the main menu to click anything which brings me to my next question...can we delete the intro videos like shadow of mordor and have it boot right to the main menu? i have a small brain and cant figure it out myself.

3570k@ 4.5ghz
GTX 780ti 3GB
16GB RAM

1080p all settings maxed out except AA which I have set to FXAA

Nowhere close to a steady 60fps. Stays mostly in the high 30s :-/

I have the same card and was getting steady 60 FPS. Was hoping for 1440 maxed/60fps but doesn't seem like it at the moment.

i5 3570k
GTX 770 4GB
8GB RAM

1080p max with SMAA. Seems to hold 60 easily indoors, otherwise varies between mid 40s to 60 depending.

Seems like some tinkering may be in order.

bind "key" "R_swapinterval -1"

Anyone tried that? Worked on Wolfenstein. So you could bind 60fps toggle and just press one button after starting the game

From reading this thread, I'm really glad that all of the 980s were selling for $600 - $700 and that I just decided to get a PS4 early instead of upgrading from my current 780 that has yet to get a real workout. When the game unlocks though (US), I'm not going to bother unlocking the framerate for the first playthrough, max the graphics and see how it feels. If I don't come across any inherent issues, I'll replay it at 60.

I'll probably turn off film grain too though. Couldn't stand it in Mass Effect.

This. I've played up to Chpt. 5 with a 4770k@4Ghz/GTX 780@1080p and on auto configure the game has been fine. A few performance drops in odd places here or there. But pretty good overall.

That's because you're missing the _ next to one

It's suppose to be +com_allowconsole 1_

Has anyone downsampled this game yet? When I down sample from 4k to 1080p the image is zoomed in to hell.

Not quite what I was expecting when they said you can remove the black bars on the PC version:

Omg lol

Steam doesn't seem to realize that I own this game. Steam time is not tracked on my Steam profile, and it's not in my list of games on the profile either. Super weird.

edit: seems to be a common problem!

Seems the game isn't actually drawn under those bars then, which I guess would save a little performance. This is what I suspect 'The Order 1886' does.

I'm still curious though, does it downsize the selected "1920x1080" to fit the area between the black borders?

Figured out downsampling without the zooming screen

Seems it just changes the field of view so it chops a chunk off the sides of the image.
Basically it's going from ultra wide cinema style to 'regular' widescreen TV style. So it's losing a chunk of the fov. But it shouldn't need to. It should zoom out from the character a bit. Or they could just fucking get with the program and put in an FoV slider.

The first two screenshots are the same though.

I absolutely adore the look of this game. They did an amazing job with id Tech 5 utilizing it in ways that I didn't expect. Really impressive. As a third person game it keeps the player from pressing their face up against the walls leaving the textures looking pretty good.
