The Evil Within PC Performance Thread

Make sure you're running it as an administrator.

I've seen a lot of streamers experiencing the same thing, and they aren't using any FOV-fix or Flawless Widescreen. I think it's a bug in the PC-version.

Yup tried running it as an admin. Still no luck. I left all settings in Flawless widescreen unchanged btw

does Flawless Widescreen replace every fix, including 60fps unlock?

can we remove lines from config and whatnot?

It's not on purpose. This section is not supposed to blur like that. I tested that part on XO, PS4, and PC and it never did that. If you're seeing that it must be a bug.

I thought it was on purpose. I hadn't done the cheatfix thing at that point either.

But now I have, no going back. What a terrible way to release this game letterboxed. Like the butterface of gaming. PC gamers have a dedicated plastic surgeon.

Well, that's weird. If you alt-tab to FW, what does it say in the box beneath all the options?

It could be FW not finding your process, your antivirus/firewall blocking access or something.

No, it just fixes the FOV and removes the bars (among other things), so you don't need any other FOV-fix or the r_forceaspectratio command.

It says in FW that it fixes movies. What about the movies does it fix? I saw screenshots of parts being cut off because they weren't needed at the default aspect ratio, so how does it replace it? Things like the sniper scope cutoff and the bloody filter over the screen in certain areas. I assume it can fix movie cutoffs because those are realtime.

So how easy is it to get the game up and running with no black bars and fixed FOV for a dummy who knows nothing about computers?
Just install Flawless widescreen. Select TEW in the application. Make sure the boxes you want ticked are ticked and slide the FOV to where you want it. Boot up the game and you are good to go.

Runs at a perfect 30fps on a 4670k+280X. I'll be saving myself the trouble of running into technical or graphical issues by enabling 60fps.

Only issue I have is that it's a really jaggy game, I'm not sure if SMAA is doing much. DOF seems to be less strong that what I've seen of the PS4 version, too.

The game looks really sparkly, especially holstered weapons.

Its actually very easy.

You make a config in which you out in one line
You put another line in steam launch options
Install a program that you run before starting game

In game press numpad 8 to activate it and then adjust with + / -

Finding instructions, downloading and getting everything running took me no more than 20min.

You just need to find the post about it which tells you step by step. On my ipad so cant find from here but its really not hard. I am reasonable competent with computers but hate dicking about with configs and shit to get things running but this was actually plenty easy.

Flawless widescreen fix is amazing. This feels entirely different and better. Anyone having trouble getting it to work, remember to use the correct x86 or x64 installer.

Is it different than the cheatfix/config file fix in any way? Not sure if I should switch.

My performance is fine using the cheatfix method so I'll probably stick with it.

The Flawless Widescreen version increases the FoV, so that it's not like looking at a zoomed in version of an ultra widescreen format.

According to Eurogamer "...in the case of The Evil Within, a lowly Core i3 4130 paired with a £100 GTX 750 Ti produces an experience very close indeed to the PS4 version."

You know, I've got a Mac here with an old GTX 260 Overclocked MAXCORE paired with a stock Q8400 2.66ghz Yorkfield.

Would be interesting to say the least as that's not quite 1GB of VRam, but I'd try it if there were a demo. As it stands though, until this game is in the bargain bin or has more mods and patches to make it run easily I'll pass.

I don't know how I feel about the r_skipglare comand, I've seen pics of it being on default and off, some scenes look much better when the fliter is off, other scenes look better when its on default.

I might have to buy this game soon as the flawless widescreen tool is a game changer, the true beauty of PC gaming.

I am using the Evil Within FOV Fix 3. Do I realy have to set FOV by pressing shift + pgup 6-8 times each time I launch the game? What FOV is going to look the best in this game on 1080p?

Also is it possible to disable lantern glare somehow? It wasn't a problem with black bars/standard FOV, but now this shit is blinding me all the time. r_skipglare helps maybe a little, but it changes the game a lot (some places look really bad with it enabled, others slight better - like mentioned above)

actually... shift +end (resuling in 90fov) is way to go I guess, I have tested it in the "save room" and FOV there is slightly different

flawlesswidescreen app works great, but what is the difference between aspect fix and FOV fix?

I'm guessing aspect fix would be for aspect ratio? aka removing the black bars?

FOV would be how close the camera is to the character, so if you just removed the black bars, it would be like the whole game is zoomed in, with the character taking up the same amount top to bottom, thus you need to pull back the camera some in order to take advantage of the extra screen space above and below

Thx yea thats what i thought, so what then does letterbox fix do?

Fov fix isn't working me this morning, it was working fine yesterday. I haven't touched the files so I don't know why shift + home won't start it.

Great thing about flawless wide screen is that it doesn't seem like you actually lose any visibility. I thought the aspect ratio was there to give you an ultra wide view or something, but it doesn't appear to be the case. Last night, I tried booting up the game without flawless widescreen enabled, and it appears that the only difference is that they cut off 25% of the screen on both the top and bottom and that's it. It didn't seem like I was gaining any visibility on the sides.

Is anyone else having massive fps drops with 60fps unlock on Chapter 4? (The Patient)

Whenever you go in to that cabin where the doctor is going crazy on the dead body
, the fps drops under 30fps... o_O Most notably whenever you use the lamp.

I have a gtx 670 3570k 4.4ghz.

Yeah, that depends on the FOV (field of view) setting in the game camera, flawless widescreen fixes that.

When FOV is adjustable you can have a wide aspect ratio with low visibility, and a narrow aspect ratio with high visibility. It's like a lens of a real camera.

Running the FOV fix, I'm getting a weird crash in Ch. 9. It happens
after I place the second probe in the disembodied head (fear center one). It transitions to what I believe is the start of a cutscene of the vile filling up, then 'crashes' to the main menu. I then have to reload my save.
I may try running the game without the fix again but it's very odd and I can't make progress. Anyone else experience something similar?

That place was by far the worst for me framerate-wise as well, on a GTX970 and 2500k@4.5.

not sure if its the chapter (chapter 6 is
very outdoors-y
) or removing the bars and adjusting the FOV, but the game is A LOT more frame-y for me now (with 60 unlocked) :/

I'm in chapter 2 with 60fps unlocked and getting frame drops on my gtx titan paired with 4770k @ 4.2ghz, can drop at low as 46, just panning the camera around can drop frame rate in the 50s. Playing on 1920 x 1080. I've taken motion blur ssao and AA off made no difference.

It seems demanding though going by the gpu temp.

So, is the game starting to run progressively worse for anyone else? Just got to chapter 6 but from 4 and up there's been a lot of jerkiness going on and this is with the 30fps cap on.

Congrats you just discovered what everyone was calling out about this game and the order 1886.

I can confirm that the game is smooth as butter at 1440p Ultra settings and a constant 40 FPS and no changes to the code with the following settings:

CPU: 3.9GHz i7-3820
RAM: 16GB 1600MHz
GPU: 6GB GeForce Titan Black
OS: Windows 8.1

One thing I can point out was when I accidentally installed the game on a secondary SSD which was plugged into a SATA 2 port, and noticed heavy texture pop in, but was fine when I moved it to my primary SATA 3 games SSD.

I tried the 60 FPS unlock but there were spikes all over the place, Decided to revert as it felt fine at the original lock with a controller.

I think the game needs DX11 and a GTX260 is DX10, so it won't even start.

Yeah. I thought it was an artistic choice, but I think it's pretty hard to argue that, in reality, it's just a way to reduce the resolution to gain performance without sacrificing sharpness of the image.

Guys is there a walk key?? I mean sometimes I just want to walk for christ sake and admire the art without sprinting pass everything...

Yeh, but i think its called a controller.

How do you guys play a lot of these games with mouse and keyboard? It would feel so weird.

Does anyone have crashing issues after finishing Chapter 7?
I get to the chapter end screen, save, choose continue and the game boots me to the main menu. Choosing "continue" or loading the latest save results in a CTD. I even replayed part of the chapter (from my earlier save) and got the same results. I don't want to restart the chapter, had already found every item I needed.
