The Evil Within PC Performance Thread

After fiddling with numerous settings and ideas from the Steam forums it appears disabling anti aliasing in-game *and* in Nvidia control panel's Evil within profile stopped the crashing for now, We'll see if it lasts.

Playing through the seemingly meaty demo, everything turned on, 1920x1080, 60 FPS, no letterbox etc etc, yeah game barely goes any higher than 30 FPS anyway, but seems to be stable and M&KB controls work fine, doesn't seem bad at all IMO, although touching anything while the intro vids are playing seems to crash it, and I had it crash once on me while fiddling with settings. But anyway ....

Game seems more like Resi 4 than classic Resi's, definite action focus with 2spooky visuals. Graphics seem really nice (textures aren't much to look at but the rest of it looks damn good.

Maybe I'm being stupid, but WTF is this ? (I turned on letterbox to see if it made any difference to how this thing aims, it didn't)

I cant shoot shit because that things blocking my view. Glitched or .... normal !?

R9 280X user here.

Much improved, now playable with the R_swapinterval - 0 and Frame rate control Wait for vertical refresh = OFF in Catalyst Control Centre

So I am using:

GTX 970
i5-2500k at 4.5GHZ
8GB RAM

And the game bounces from 38 to 60fps with it averaging in the 43-60 range.

Is this normal? When people say the 60fps vsync is broken is this what they mean?

Means the mouse makes the game very easy, pulling off headshots with ease.

Also controller feels a lot better with 30fps than a mouse does. I didn't like the frame rate bouncing all over the place (I also have a 970).

Ah, so I have the RE4 on the Wii effect. I know it seems odd since my question in the other thread, but I'll take better feeling controls (IMO) over difficulty. I can't stand aiming on dual analog.

I beat the game without a single crash with locked 30 fps at high settings. I didn't play the game for long at each session though, around 1-2 hours.

I've got a GTX 970 as well and was playing through the demo.

Using the unlocked framerate launch command, along with NVCP to framelimit to 58 and enable adaptive V-sync, I had a pretty constant 60fps at 1080. There was the occasional slight frame dip, but for the most part it was pretty stable at 60. The opening area with the rain is very demanding though, and I was getting ~50's there.

I'm probably going to play the rest of the demo with DSR downsampling, locked 30fps, and controller on my TV.

Beter be safe than sorry, coil whine can ruin lives.

I don't hear any coil whine at all. Why do you say my card is defective?

I wonder why me and Poetic.Injustice can't get 60fps consistently? Maybe it's just toward the beginning of the area where it is consistent, or those special changes you made.

EDIT - I tested segments of Chapter 2 and Chapter 1 (including the one that you said underperformed), and it mirrored what you said. 60fps constant everywhere but the very beginning (which for me was in the mid 40s to low 50s).

Damn, this game stutters like a bitch on my PC....sigh....guess ill have to get the ps4 version.

What's your PC specs?

The current recommendation for best performance is to use the console command to unlock the framerate entirely, then you Nvidia Inspector to lock the framerate at 58fps (the game still renders and displays at 60fps because the game automatically renders 2 fps over the cap) and then force adaptive V-sync.

On my 970 I was able to get a fairly consistent 60fps, with some drops in the more demanding areas.

i tried locking the framerate..the stutter was still terrible in different areas and When I mean stutter is terrible..i mean it was Choppy

i5 2500k gtx 660 16gb ram

Really? Locking to 30 worked pretty well for me.

I personally recommend sticking to PC since if you're going to be playing on the PS4, you're going to have to deal with the damn black bars and performance issues.

I don't mean locking the framerate with the ingame lock, that's a different and poor solution.

There is a console command you can add to the game so that it boots with an unlocked framerate. Then you can use your graphics drivers to lock the framerate at a specific point.

On a 660, I'd recommend just using the console command to unlock the framerate, then locking at 30 with your drivers.

That'll give the most smooth experience, and you'll have the option to remove the black bars if desired.

how do i go about doing that? I want to try that and see how it is.

A bunch of details about tweaks specific to this game are here

http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/The_Evil_Within

The high framerate section is particularly relevant.

Right-click the game in the Steam client and choose Properties.
Click Set Launch Options and add +r_swapinterval 0 for no cap.
Click OK and run the game.

That unlocks the framerate. To lock it externally, (this is all from memory so the wording might be a bit fuzzy)

  1. Download Nvidia Inspector
  2. Click the little gear icon
  3. Type in "The Evil Within" to the profiles section.
  4. Set the "Frame Rate Limiter" to whatever framerate you want. If you want 60, you should try using 58. If you want 30, then I think 30 will be fine. If not, 28 might be needed, but I've only tested it for 60 personally. Theoretically it should work the same for 30.
  5. There is a VSync section where one setting says "Standard" and if you click it, there is an option for adaptive. Select adaptive.
  6. Immediately after is a VSync option with choices that include"1/2 framerate" and "3D Application setting". Choose "Force On".

Now, that should set it up for The Evil Within, but if you're playing the demo, the Demo isn't properly part of the profile.

To add the demo to the profile,

  1. Click the icon on the top that has a little green plus in it, it's right next to an icon with a little red x.
  2. This should open a dialog window. Browse to The Evil Within Demo's executable and select it.

Once this is all done, hit apply and it should be working in game now.
