The Evil Within PC Performance Thread

I want to add that if you limit to 30 you should use the vsync option for half refresh rate.

I agree. Half-refresh vsync often produces more evenly rendered frames than 60hz vsync + limiter at 30fps. That combined with "maximum pre-rendered frames" set to "1" should help minimize input lag for a fairly decent 30fps experience on PC.

Glad to help, hope y'all enjoy the game!

I am using using MSI afterburner to lock to 30fps and half adaptive refresh in the nvidia control panel, its actually feels very playble for a 30fps.

The frame pacing felt a little off using just the framerate options.

Considering buying this. Is this game a total mess on AMD systems like other id Tech games? I don't really want to install the 10GB demo to find out

What's really irritating is that you have to do it in the inspector. In the control panel there is a half refresh rate setting, but only for adaptive, that leads to different results. Gosh, why is pc gaming so complicated.

Anyway, I decided to play WITH letterbox. The added information you see without the letterbox really doesn't add anything to the game and does often look bland. One can clearly see that the game was framed with letterbox in mind.

A bunch of details about tweaks specific to this game are here

The high framerate section is particularly relevant.

That unlocks the framerate. To lock it externally, (this is all from memory so the wording might be a bit fuzzy)

  1. Download Nvidia Inspector
  2. Click the little gear icon
  3. Type in "The Evil Within" to the profiles section.
  4. Set the "Frame Rate Limiter" to whatever framerate you want. If you want 60, you should try using 58. If you want 30, then I think 30 will be fine. If not, 28 might be needed, but I've only tested it for 60 personally. Theoretically it should work the same for 30.
  5. There is a VSync section where one setting says "Standard" and if you click it, there is an option for adaptive. Select adaptive.
  6. Immediately after is a VSync option with choices that include"1/2 framerate" and "3D Application setting". Choose "Force On".

Now, that should set it up for The Evil Within, but if you're playing the demo, the Demo isn't properly part of the profile.

To add the demo to the profile,

  1. Click the icon on the top that has a little green plus in it, it's right next to an icon with a little red x.
  2. This should open a dialog window. Browse to The Evil Within Demo's executable and select it.

Once this is all done, hit apply and it should be working in game now.

I got the game on Steam sale, and I'm following these instructions assuming they offer a smoother experience than the in-game framerate settings.

If I want to use 60, do I keep the in-game settings at 30 fps, or do I still need to select the 60 fps+vsync option?

Don't touch the ingame settings, they will overwrite the cmd.

I gave up on 60FPS though. With my 970@980, no matter the setting, I get drops and stutter every few seconds. It's really a shame. 30FPS, low FOV, constant motion judder, big ass letterbox....the game feels like horror for all the wrong reasons.

Game runs fine on pretty much any correct card (7850 and above) if you want 30fps.

60fps goal, and then there is no card yet that can guarantee you this all the time, even GTX 980.

If you do it all as the instructions say you shouldn't have to touch the in game framerate setting at all.

I just installed the game. When I change the graphics settings, the screen zooms in and mostly everything is off screen.

Edit: This game is changing my desktop resolution. First time I've ever seen this type of thing.

For some reason the game seems to be running great on my R9 290 @1200mhz and i5 4570. I'm using flawless mod with fov set to +4 and getting solid 50-60 fps @1080p throughout with no stutter or tearing. Its such a change of pace from last couple of weeks.

I wouldn't consider that great, since it isn't locked. You probably have and see the same microstutter most people complain about, you just don't care. I have to say that I would kill for a patch that makes this game stable 60. I like it otherwise, but it is so juddery, which constantly takes me out of immersion. Locking it ro rock solid 30 doesn't help much since that feels like shit constantly, it's just more..constant.

THe biggest joke is, in my case, the graphics setting do NOTHING regarding the judder. The game drops frames, even with everything on low. The engine is just broken.

Such a shame since it's an awesoom game otherwise,

Quick question, do the console commands still disable achievements? Or was that fixed, I thought I remember hearing it was, but I can't find any info.

If yuo use the console command in game I believe it still does, but if you use it as a commandline argument (set the game to launch with those commands) then it doesn't

Hmm, then perhaps they've changed it, or achievements are bugged.

I don't know first hand as I've only been able to try the demo.

Nope, no judder or microstutter or anything, and I'm pretty sensitive to that stuff. I've stopped playing FC4 and ACU altogether because the stutter made me motion sick. Its been completely smooth so far and the only reason I could tell it was not locked 60 because I had little fps counter running at the bottom.

It is technically not possible that your game is judder free since you stated that you are playing with an unlocked, inconsistent framerate. And no, you are obviously not sensitive to judder.

Was this game patched? I'm getting rock solid 60 FPS @ No letterbox 1080P with SMAA.

i7 5820k @ 4.2ghz
GTX 970

Dunno what happened but the game runs great for me.

Have you played the entire game? Because not every chapter has the same level of framerate strain.

i5 2500k @ 4.5GHz
16GB Ram
GTX 970 @ 1542Mhz VRam @ 8GHz

Mostly locked 60fps during gameplay but still plenty of noticeable dips here and there, especially during cutscenes.

Max settings plus:

r_swapInterval set to 0 with forced NV vsync and r_forceAspectRatio set to 0.

(edit) I also have RivaTuner Statistics server running and I have it's framerate limit set to 60. This basically fixes all stuttering and using Com_showFPS at the console clearly shows a very stable frame time average of around 16.5 99% of the time. Without frame limiting, or indeed while using the in-game frame limiting the frame times are all over the place. This game just doesn't seem to handle frame pacing at all well.

Why can't I disable vsync when I set framerate to 60?

That is a good question. I think you can't disable or overwrite Vsync in the game, even not through the Nividia Control Panel. Overwrite doesn't work. If I set overwrite to off, the game still doesn't tear. There is something wrong with it and I think that could be the source of the stuttering. The whole engine is somewhat broken in the vsync/pacing camp. Which is a shame, because it could be GOTY otherwise.

It's a great game with a broken engine.

The fact that we have to sort out frame pacing ourselves does not reflect well on the effort put into performance.

Got the game during the recent sale but the first impression with it just now is not good:
  • My 360 Wireless controllers are not recognized, the menu is only KB/M
  • Which would be a KO criterium but I cannot even get to the game part: the chapter 1 loading screen finishes and then I get a black screen with "Hit ESC" in the bottom right
20€ well spend so far..

Solved my problems, should have guessed it were the same like in Wolfenstein TNO: disable Fraps and MSI Afterburner overlays, then ID-tech5 allows your game to load.

Anyone know why when you fullscreen this game it zooms in? It's set at the default low resolution but trying to set it to 1080p fullscreen puts most of the menus off screen. It seems I can only view the top left of the menus. Only way I can play in 1080p is if I put fullscreen off but then I see the desktop.

When I downsample this game I have to set the Scaling mode to "no scaling" in Nvidia Control Panel or else it zooms in like crazy. Not sure if this helps you.

Adjust Desktop Size and Position -> Scaling -> No scaling

So, whatever it is which makes this game stutter, it's def. not a performance issue. It's completly random. The exact same scene/room under the exact same conditions/lighting can have sever stutter or no stutter at all with perfectly smooth 60FPS. I guess it has something to do with shader caching or something like that, sometimes when you put your lamp on stutter starts, but if you run around a bit and go to the exact same position with your lamp on, it's perfect 60FPS again...

It's just weird. Maybe it's part of the "psychologial horror".

I'm having the same issue.

Just want to thank the folks in here for providing the solutions to get the game running acceptably for me.

3570k at 4.2Ghz
GTX970

Started it out unchanged just to see what I was working with. Took black bars off(good god, I feel bad for console players) and it was almost nauseating. And the performance with the in-game 60fps option was god awful. So stuttery feeling.

Used the unlock framerate console command, set Nvidia's Vsync and then used MSI Afterburner to limit the framerate and its fantastic now. Well, its decent. Mostly 60fps and feels smooth enough.

Also set the black bar console command to '2', which looks ok and feels fine.

Very little trial and error needed and I'm able to basically just jump in an enjoy!

I only have it running at 1080p and SMAA for now, and while the game isn't the best looking, it has it moments. The DoF looks really nice, for instance. But it obviously doesn't perform nearly how you'd expect, given its less-than-brilliant graphics. Again, I feel awful for console gamers.
