The iOS Gaming Thread: November 2012 A Bold New Era!

I'm sure this has been asked before, but just now diving into iOS gaming and planning to get an iPad for myself for Christmas, but haven't EVER read or kept up with these threads, so:

Is there a post or list someone can link me to of worthwhile RPGs/roguelikes on iOS? That's primarily what I'm interested in so I'd really appreciate it. Besides that I'm interested in any non-strategy/puzzle space games such as Galaxy on Fire 2, so any recommendations on that would be helpful as well.

Edit: Just now saw and reading the "best iOS games ever" lists in the OP, but anything RPG specific would still be helpful Thanks.

Zaga 33: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/zaga-33/id516903940?mt=8

That's a roguelike I've been playing a lot lately but it doesn't have any RPG elements to it. It's becoming one of my favorite games of the year.

Dungeon Raid: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/dungeon-raid/id403090531?mt=8

RPG/puzzle hybrid and so incredibly addicting.

Cardinal Quest: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cardinal-quest/id532050659?mt=8

A more traditional roguelike/RPG. I haven't put a lot of time into it but it seems pretty good.

heard many things about ARC Squadron too - good things-

got beat down! paused just to say I'm diggin it so far. thank god the dpad adjusts to where your left thumb is placed. iPhone 5 widescreen support sealed the deal for me. not much else to say at this point other than it's a good iOS beat em up and the price is right.

a few things to add. I like the premise, you've been fired from your corporate job and revenge is taken out on your coworkers. controls are solid, left stick can feel "slippery" so don't make too many sudden movements or you may have to readjust your thumb. love the old school pixel style, environments and enemies look great.

I've been iOS gaming less and less, especially now that I mostly game on PC these days. I could live with 16GB if I knew how to transfer app save data back and forth easily. I mean, when you delete an app, the app data goes poof, right? But if I have the app data stored on my iCloud, it won't let me retrieve that unless I restore my phone I think. Kinda annoying.

If you reinstall the app, it should ask you the first time you launch it whether you wanna use iCloud data.

But you really should use iFunBox if you wanna backup your saves. It's easy to use, and does not require jailbreak. It's also useful for transferring saves between iPad/iPhone if the game doesn't support iCloud.

Also will need to sell my iPhone 4 somewhere, Gazelle shows $110 for 32GB which seems kinda low

Never sell anything on Gazelle. Your phone is worth $250-300 on Craigslist.

Dream of pixels is a great Reversed Tetris game. I think that Any pyzzle fans should try this. Beatdown is also a blast to play. The only worthy games to me tonight.

I've gotten addicted to Pocket Planes recently but I've been wanting to play some sort of city building simulation. I like the Pocket Planes, Tiny Tower, and Pocket Frogs game play but I want to have something develop, not just have a button to push every 5 minutes.

Happy Street was enjoyable but it got a little boring after awhile. Is there a freemium Sim City or anything like that out?

Ever played Astro Story or Edo Towns by Kairosoft?

Is posting future iOS games OK? Because I'm totally backing and looking forward to Fist of Awesome:

I hope it'll be Punch Quest on crack.

anybody picking anything up from tonight? that brawler thing looks kinda meh.

I'm dead curious about that kinda kinect boxing game though lol.

Dream of Pixels has been pretty good so far if you've got a Tetris itch. The puzzle mode is basically a Doodle Fit clone, though.

I'm assuming the iCloud prompt thing is for games that use the iCloud to share saves across all devices. Pretty sure I still have games that don't have native iCloud support but that's good to know at least. I've used ifunbox before but seems like hassle to find the save data for each app

Ill probably list my current phone on CL and Amazon after seeing what people list it for. Will probably put it in the buy/sell thread too if anyone is interested

A question: If you get an app while it is free (like for example Lost Winds 2), is the game permanently associated with your ios account or will you lose it if it is deleted?

How do I get past the tutorial on the Lost Wind 2 game? The part with the large rock, where you have to pinch the screen. I got so annoyed with it I ended deleting the game.

Flick it up into the air and pinch it? tbh I think LW2 is probably quite hard if you've not played the first. There's a lot of assumed knowledge going in.

I might pickup an ipad 4th gen 16GB over the weekend, should stretch and pay the extra £79 for 32GB? £79 is a lot of money just wondering if it'll be worth it.

I don't put music or videos on my iPad so 16GB is enough for me. If you plan to put those on there I'd say get the 32GB.

I didn't realise they made a sequel. Checking out now!

Edit: Looks awesome, but I don't remember the original being an endless runner. That kinda sucks :(

The original wasn't an endless runner. They switched it up for the sequel/spinoff.

I drained my iPad Mini playing it, unlocked each of the blue cars and the first red one. For some reason I can't get my brain to accept that there's an E-Break mechanic to slow things down when I get to the tougher parts. I haven't even gotten to any of the bits where you switch vehicles mid-race, or do insane jumps over giant boats.

I'm sure in future updates there will be more cars and different types of tracks too, but right now it's probably my favorite endless runner.

Also, if anyone cares, Angry Birds Space HD is on sale for $0.99 right now, it's usually $2.99.

Is Space any good? Now I have a "new" (3rd gen) iPad I could probably do with something to show it off with.

I just searched for "Space" and didn't get anything specific in iTunes, so were you referring to Angry Birds Space?

If so, absolutely. It's my favorite out of all the Angry Birds games and the gravity mechanic is really great. I think it's completely robbery bullshit that they charge 3X the price for the iPad version when it's the EXACT SAME as the iPhone one and there's NO iCloud progress syncing between versions, so if you're going to pick it up, do so while it's $1. Otherwise just get the iPhone version and play it at 2X like I do with all the other AB games.

I put only games on my first iPad and I had less than 1 GB of space left within five months of ownership. I'd consider 32 GB the absolute minimum.

I agree with this, managing apps on the retina iPad must be a real pain in the ass with only 16GB. I have the 64 GB version and I always only have about 10 GB free but that includes a fair amount of music and videos.

I'm pretty much the opposite. I only have a 16 GB version and it's fine. I play a game, I finish it, I delete it. I don't keep a massive backlog, I play what I buy. It's a good way of keeping your spending down and appreciating the games you have properly. I fear I would just loose games in the cavern of my drive otherwise. I don't do music or videos (streaming!).
