In Settings -> General -> Info you should find the OS version.

Hope my translation is right, my iPhone is set to German. :lol

sure, Settings > General>About

The Version number tells you what you’re rolling. should be 4.1 (8B117)
 
Are you not supposed to be able to see what friends your friends have?
All I see now is a number.

Are you not supposed to see what "Achievements" a friend has gotten?
All I see now is a number.

There is no information on which game they come from and what kinds of achievements he/she has unlocked.

All of this feels very gimped...

Then you should be fine, hardware-wise. It's the iPhone 3G (and earlier) that isn't supported, I believe.

Yeah I have Jeff on my list and I thought I should be able to see a highscore or something. Maybe that stuff is in-game?

I don’t mind not being able to see friends of friends. that was a controversial feature on xbox like when they added it.

not being able to see achievements of friends when they start getting populated would be beyond lame. that needs to be there. looking at apple.com screenshots, I think those show up under game pages when you compare that game’s achievements with a friend… not sure how that will work exactly.

You might to have to wait a bit for the 4.1 update for your iPod Touch. Here in Germany at least, it isn't available yet. I think it's currently being uploaded, but I'm not sure.

Or my iTunes can't find it for some reason, that might also be the case.

Edit: Obviously I'm not alone, so you might have to wait a bit indeed.
 
Oh okay, that makes a lot of sense. I was going to sarcastically begrudge Steve Jobs but now I'm going to do it earnestly then!
 
Would be nice if there was a post with all gamecenter ids separated by space so we can just copy them from the NeoGaf webapp and just paste them into the gamecenter app to do a mass invite.
 
Any idea when games are going to start rolling out for this thing? I can't believe they didn't have at least like one free small game at launch.
 
My first “uuuugggghhh” moment with Game Center.

when I check my friends list and see the recently played games from someone on the list, there’s no way to see what achievements the person has in the game by tapping on the game.

instead, tapping on the game brings you straight to the app store (of course. sigh)
 
Here's some pics of what the achievements look like, they don't pop up in game like xbox or playstation but at the end of the game after dying on Ms Pac Man it told me what achievements I won however it seems the work was unfinished as I can see a default code for something that should be written.

iPod Touch dudes: I'd really recommend waiting for the update instead of getting the ipsw and updating by hand, by the way.

Don't worry, this is dependent on the game. Developers are able to make in-game notifications just like Xbox Live or Open Feint.
 
I hope they get different skins or something. The current one with the faux woodgrain and the green felt, along with the font they use for your username, is really ugly.

i'm gonna jailbreak my itouch to get this. no way i'm gonna sit back and fall behind just because the apple monkey didn't press the itouch update button yet

Haha, you can get the update without jailbreaking or the monkey. You probably know that though.

It looks nothing like what I would imagine coming from Apple.
 
The new friend honk from gamecenter is terrifying and has already got me in trouble with the girlfriend.

On a slightly related note I'm really enjoying nelson tethers, I wish real life had it's art style.
 
Looking at it, I'm not sure what the point of Game Center is apart from hoarding achievements and showing them to your friends. And having a goofy message.

It's kinda dumb without any real networking magic.

That doesn't stop me from adding everyone who can't shut up about his GCID, but still..

Edit: Okay, matchmaking, yeah. I'm kinda dumb at times :lol

Oh wow I thought game centre was going to be limited to 3Gs and above models, my 2g touch still lives! will have to grab that tonight.

I honestly thought with the more powerful models now out that the 2g touch was going to be swept aside like the first gen and early iphone models.

I also just noticed Hybrid 2, well that's sorts out my holiday time :lol
 
Just updated my iPhone 4 to 4.1.

Add me, Ninjadom.

This gives Apple a great chance to update their only iOS game, Texas Hold Em. They haven't updated this game in over two years. Great chance for them to add online multiplayer into this game, right??
 
iPod touch 4.1 is not on iTunes yet? D: I want to playyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

*edit* I like the look of iTunes 10 btw, not booted it up for a little while so I was on 9 before now, looks a little neater to me.
 
So does Game Center tell you who's playing what game, how exactly do you go about finding people in your list to add to games?

I guess this isn't a big problem for me yet, since I have no games to play with it, like most everyone else!

It looks like you can't pm via Game Center either? I need to read more about how it works, probably time to hit up apple's website later.
 
Yeah, seems like you can't send messages to other people - only communicate through status updates. That sucks. But it is probably a because they dont want people to sign up with Game Centrr just for free txts
 
I bought Duke Nukem 3D at lunch today. I cannot find a comfortable control scheme for that game at all. I wish they'd patch it to include the Doom Classic or Nova control styles.
