I've been wanting a pinball game, what to get? Monster Pinball, or Pinball HD (for being a universal app)?

Pinball HD is not universal. There is Pinball HD for iPad and Pinball HD for iPhone. (blah)

Slayer pinball is actually a better game.

But it's one (ugly) table vs 4 tables, Pinball HD lets you slickly change between tables in the app, and the water table looks great (they all do with the retina support, but the colors in the water one are really nice).

I looked in to that Monster pinball and got Pinball HD instead, and don't regret it. It's very well done, really stands out on the iPhone 4.

Wait games go free on the app store :o? Is this common? Why would they do this?

Awesome, im going to be getting an ipod touch soon so this is all relevant, is it pretty much a word of mouth service the app store? Ill be honest its really hard to find genuinely decent looking games on the app store itself.

Splode reminds me of Newtonica2.

I just bought Zenonia and am loving it.

Are there any other action rpg/zelda games like this? Really cool.
AcrossAge is good, try the demo :D. I'm stuck in the game though, due to what is essentially a sliding puzzle :lol.

Monster Pinball pretty much sucks, ignore it. Pinball HD looks great but it's not very interesting to play either in my opinion. It's fun, but not nail bitingly, one more try fun. I still think the best pinball games on Iphone are Pinball Dreams and Pinball Fantasies ports from Amiga. Trying Slayer Pinball now, but it's from the same people who made Pinball HD, which makes me weary.

*edit*, I already see that Slayer Pinball has the same problem as all tables in Pinball HD, and that is that flippers have huge travel which makes it impossible to do anything strategic with the ball - you can just launch it up and it goes like it's been shot from the cannot no matter what part of the flipper hits it. It's not possible to transfer the ball from one flipper to the other or anything of that kind.

deerhunter is free today

Plug these in to your RSS feeder, and you'll see a half-dozen or so free games a day, and keep track of new releases and sales.

If only someone would figure out a way to get Timeshock! and the other Pro Pinball games on iOS. Those are the best tables I've ever played.

Promotional purposes. It's a cheap way to get people talking about a game again after it has declined in popularity. Even Civilization Revolution was free a few weeks back, so the mainstream companies see it as a viable strategy as well.
So do they go free for a day or something then back up to price?

I'm LTTP bur Mirror's Edge is fantastic! I didn't expect it to be so intuitive and the controls are very clever.

It depends. Personally I use AppAdvice to see which apps are on sale/free at the moment. It's not free though so you could just DL App Miner or some of the other free ones.

It's so common I've filled my iPod Touch up multiple times over with just free apps. I've never seen any reason to buy anything on it because stuff goes free so often.

I DLed Zombie Highway, which was 99 cents in the App Store. I really enjoy it, and it's beyond simple to play and takes advantage of the Retina display (for a game with such a barren look). I have one problem with it, however:

You're driving down an endless stretch of highway in the desert while trying to shake the undead off your SUV (by scraping them against debris or blasting them with a gun). There's no in-game music to speak of, but worse off is I can't seem to get any songs in my iPod library going. I have too many perfect songs for a game like this!

Edit:

Ok, I recently got an iPhone. What are the essentials? I would prefer free games so if you recommend me a game I have to pay for, please say it's not free. Also, is Mega Man 2 worth it for $1?

No, Mega Man 2 is a horrible horrible port, play the demo and you'll see what I mean

Yeah, I just read about it and IGN gave it a 1.0. Oh Capcom, you so crazy.

Any other game recommendations? How is Chaos Rings and Zenonia?

I beg to differ, bought the whole game a while back when it WAS a shitty port, now it's playable AND fun! It only took them a few updates.

Guess they never updated the demo then as it was sluggish and had horrible controls.

Zenonia is a straight port from older mobiles and looks terribly blurry. Can't say how much fun it is since I couldn't get into it. If that helps you make up your mind, I'm not a graphics whore. In fact, I enjoyed Minimae greatly because it was meant to look retro. However, Zenonia is just lazy.

Chaos Rings, on the other hand, is fantastic. I've achieved 108% completion, it's that engaging ;)

And by the way, Minimae needs to be pimped a bit more. A great riff on both Ultima and Dragon Quest.

Go back a page or two, Minsc posted an excellent list.

Just noticed Naughty Bear is out now for iPhone. Wonder how it compares to the console game... Looks pretty similar.

On the screenshots, yes, but they're misleading.

It's a Pac-Man clone.

Pretty fun, actually.

There are no really good apps that are free forever. But what companies do is they make apps go free for a day or two to spread the word, and then when they go paid again they sell more.
A couple of good sites are:
appshopper.com
freeappalert.com
and if your too lazy to scroll through everything freeappreport.com

also check out The adventures of Jim and Frank (Layton ripoff) Tilt to Live, and Cows in Space.

Two of the best free games are words with friends and chess with friends.

Also, I know it's a recession and all, but are you that concerned about potentially wasting a dollar? A dollar?!

BTW, the reason some games go free for a bit is because if they can get enough downloads to crack the Top 25, the potential sales skyrocket. If you're not on the bestseller or featured list, you're just another face in the endless sea of apps.

I'm a pretty new Touch owner so I may be missing some, but these are the most common/essential titles (from what I've discovered). They're not all free but some have free "lite" versions.

Angry Birds Lite (Free)
The free version has a lot of levels. A cute game where birds are essentially cannon balls with different abilities, where the object is to destroy the enemies/fortresses on screen. Fun for a while but it can get kind of old. 99 cents unlocks a TON of levels. Worth the price but I don't think I have the attention span or patience to get through the whole thing. Fun use of the touch screen.

Fruit Ninja ($0.99)
Addictive old-school point scoring action. Fruit gets thrown by you and you slice them by slashing the screen with your finger. String combos together by getting 3 or more fruit at a time, while avoiding bombs that will end your game. Easy to understand and hard to do. Games go by quick and although it's basically a one trick pony, it's a fun one. I don't think there's a free version but it's only a buck.

Doodle Jump ($0.99)
A kind of cute game where you have a bouncing little qbert guy that you have to guide over platforms by tilting the ipod. Quick games that are high-score based. Worth the dollar, though I haven't played it much.

Words With Friends Lite (Free)
A cool Scrabble game where you can play several boards at a time. There's a $2.99 version that eliminates ads, but it doesn't improve any features (unfortunately there's no record keeping, leader boards, etc.). It's not the sort of game where you sit down and play a board entirely... Really you play your move, plan out the next one if you want, and leave the application until someone plays their turn. You can set up push notifications to let you know when it's your turn again. I'm really addicted to this, any GAF users want to play me, I'm GlassJoe360 on there. I'm not sure how good the official Scrabble app is, but I've read complaints in the store reviews.

I've been avoiding action games that map the d-pad to the screen (like Mega Man 2) because I can't play them hardly at without feeling the buttons. Either it takes practice or dedication. Other games I've been playing that I don't consider essential, depending on your tastes:

Crossword: Navigating this is surprisingly a bitch, but it's free.
Moxie 2: Got it from the app store when it was free, decent word game.
Phoenix Wright: OK, I'm through the first case so far.

I don't have anything for Game Center. Is there anything that's must have that's compatible?

This page got me to try out the Mega Man 2 port, or at least the demo. Jeez what a sad excuse it is. Slow, sluggish, awful controls, nothing moves or feels right, the music doesn't loop properly... it's practically unplayable.
