Two great games that hardly anyone talks about here are Jet Car Stunts and Tappi Bear All in 1.

Jet Car Stunts is something like a combination of an arcade racer with pilotwings and a platformer. The controls are surprisingly excellent; you feel a real sense of accomplishment after competing a level without dieing; it's great to play for anywhere from a couple minutes to a couple hours; and for those who like leaderboards, you can not only compete against the best players in the world, but also watch their replays.

Tappi Bear is 6 games in 1. The two standouts are: a missile command-like game, which is as far as I know the best game of its kind on the app store, though not as good as the original; and an innovative arcade style jumping game in which you climb by jumping back and forth between 2 walls while avoiding enemies and collecting donuts for extra points. What makes the latter so addictive are the controls. You touch anywhere on the screen to grab ahold of a wall and release to jump. The longer you go without releasing the higher you jump, but if you hold too long you die. It has Game Center achievements and leaderboards and it's just a buck. And currently I'm in 14th place in the world!

jet car stunts is probably the iphone game i've sunk the most time into out of any app i've played

it's been out for a looong time, though, so i think that's why no one talks about it

Anyone have N.O.V.A and interested in playing a match online? I tried online with no luck at finding anyone. I just got the game this weekend and would like try online out.

I think so.

I'm missing the one for cutting three ropes at once, even though I have the achievement for cutting five ropes (so obviously I should have that one too).

I closed Game Center and Cut the Rope from memory, opened Cut the Rope and played a level, then restarted Game Center and it picked up on my missing achievements.

Ledsen said:
It doesn't actually transfer any achievements, it just looks at your save data and checks if you've reached any of the needed goals... I've never used any achievement service other than Game Center and I still unlocked a ton of achievments when I got the Game Center update for Angry Birds.
So I guess the problem is that Cut The Rope doesn't do that check of your save data after updating to iOS 4.1 with game center. You would think this should be a requirement for a game to be labeled Game Center compatible :(. Maybe I should send the developers an email about this.

It shouldn't deter anyone from buying the awesome Cut The Rope for 99 cents, but as mentioned, some achievements seem to be glitched. But I'm really enjoying Game Center and the iDevice offerings overall.

Anyway, a couple of comments on games that I've recently picked up:

Pac Man: Swipe controls work really well, I really gained the respect of people that have supposedly played a perfect game (an achievement is even called "Be Like Billy" by getting to the last possible level, a nice touch). The perfect score is like 3,000,000+ points, but I'm pretty happy with my score on easy (with continues) of 67,250 :lol for a ranking of of #1771 in the world. The game is really addictive once you try at it, though the asking price of $5 is too much.

Pix'n Love Rush: Really a great old school retro actioin coin collecting platformer / shooting title. An odd requirement to reach the leader board is to to get 1,000,000 points, something that I've done (only after tons of games and memorization), but apparently less than 2,000 others have been able to. Maybe open up the leader board like every other game has done? They should give other options to the control scheme too, it took me forever to adjust, but one does get used to it.

Spider: The Secret Of...: Honestly this game has a cool concept, but sort of confusing controls and is pretty long and boring.

Super Mega Worm: Close to being a great game, but it's hampered by pace. It takes too fucking long for the action to really start and is overall "too easy." There's 25 levels before it ends, but play sessions just take way too long (probably a good 15 minutes) for what's otherwise an arcade style high-score style game.

UFO On Tape: Other Gaffers recommended this, but each game is the same simple concept, plays for a minute or two, and it's overall a pretty shallow experience. Nice effort technically with the gyros but hardly feels like a real "game." Though I shouldn't complain too much for a buck.

I was gonna pick up the Bit Trip Beat game tonight and saw the price raised to $3. Is it really fun or just pong?

I tell you that Namco Bit (something music pong game) is really kick ass. I also picked up Chaos Rings and Cut the Rope. I forgot what it was like being on Apples App store again. They make it too tempting to just buy stuff.

I am crazy addicted to words with friends. Wish it had game center support, but honestly works perfectly well without it.

My question is:
Are there any other games on the app store (other than chess with friends) that works in the same way? ie. Turn based with notifications?

I think my ideal would be something like advance wars or Civilization. Does civ:rev hve that feature?

Push notifications on Civ would be ridiculously good. Hopefully they're working on a new game. Civ 5 iPad would destroy my world.

Words With Friends is friggin' great overall. I really enjoy the fact that you can play several games at a time and close the app in between turns and get even notified via push notifications when it's your turn. The only (unavoidable?) problem I've had so far is some random gamers taking the game far too seriously, taking forever on a turn and deep down knowing that they're "cheating" by playing words that that are far too uncommon for the average person to have heard of (some people use a cheat program even, don't ask me why). WWF's dictionary is also a little too loose with it's 2 letter words that aren't actual words and could use leaderboards or at least some kind of win/loss ratio. This is speaking from someone who owns the full version (it's only 3 bucks but doesn't add functionality, it only loses the ads).

Anyway if any honest gamers want to start a game with GlassJoe360 I always have a few active sessions. I just sort of wish there was some optional time limit to play a word, because I'm more of a play and move on person, than some boner that takes 3 hours and googles possibilities w/ their letters.

carcassonne is just miles ahead of wwf in every way for my money. and i still like words with friends and play with gaffers all the time but it's just so basic, doesn't even have 3p+ and no stat-tracking of any sort as mentioned above (carc at least has ELO rating for friend matches, and you can play 2-5, and you can't cheat like scrabble :lol (although in my limited experience gaffers appear to be honest folk on wwf))

Carc is definitely the better game. What does ELO stand for, anyway?

Has anyone here played Blocks Mania? It's a fun little game where you slide your yellow block character around to collect stars and reach the exit (marked with an X). The trick is, when you slide your block, he doesn't stop until he hits an obstacle.

I've been playing through the game (which recently got a Game Center update), and I haven't had too much trouble with it. Until I reached Pack 4, Level 8. For the life of me, I can't figure out how to grab the last star.

23ncrkz

For those not familiar with the game, here are the rules that this level follows:

  • Brown boxes stop your character.
  • Blue tubes automatically redirect your block.
  • Sliding through fire causes you to automatically burn through the next brown box that you hit, and you won't stop until you hit another obstacle.
  • The key is needed to open the locked door.
  • The glowing, circular tile is a warp. Touch one and you'll pop out of the other one, traveling in the same direction.
  • Flying off-screen results in death.
Has anyone cleared this level? Either I'm missing something obvious or this level is glitched.
Ohh, this game is free atm.

edit: lol nevermind, I found the free version lol.

Okay GAF, I'm almost sold on Carcassonne, but one thing bothers me after reading a review:

You can only play untimed matches with friends? I don't have friends with the game and that style of play is what I'm interested in.

And can you play more than one game at a time?

Normally I'd bite no questions asked, but for $5 I want to be sure.

you have lots of friends (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=397985)

you can play multiple games at time, not sure of the limit but it is at least 3

I always call it ELO but it's actually Elo named after the guy who came up with the rating system. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elo_rating_system

Yeah I've had like 15 games going at once so not sure what it tops out at if anything.

Virtual City, anyone play it?
I have and I like it a lot. It's much more suited to iphone than the simcity ports. Sandbox mode and the ipad version are coming in a few days. There's a lot of missions though, so I'm in no rush for the update. The tutorial levels explain the ins and outs well too. Can't think of any significant flaws. There's also a demo to try it out.

Just tried that and it's not working here for me unfortunately.

It's not showing me as having completed Foil Box either even though I did. Ah well, I'm sure it'll get fixed eventually. Fieldrunners has two glitched achievements for me as well so maybe it's a Game Center issue.

What are some of the flaws you had with Sim City Deluxe? I found it to be very deep and enjoyable from what I played, no problems with interface or controls. Curious to what is improved in VC over SCD, though I should probably just look at that free demo.

Is this game any good? I like the art, but I thought I remember hearing that it was shit

The controls are really, really hard - the wee guy runs like crazy whenever you get anywhere near the joypad, which is fixed and not floating. It's really hard to get him to just walk forwards. =(

Knight's Rush looks so awesome.. Thinking about buying it. More impressions please?

And does it support Retina display?

You can try playing the last level of the Box you didn't get the achievement for and pressing "next level" at the completion screen. That worked the one time it happened to me.
That worked. Thanks.

Took me ages to remember how to get the lowest star on 4-25 again, though :lol

Just got Knight's Rush and love it. Haven't played it much yet but it seems to be a notch above awesome similar games like Wolfboy or Twin Blades. It's instantly fun and intuitive, it's beautiful, has a very high and smooth framerate, really high overall production values and what looks like tons of content.

No retina but it looks surprisingly good.

The game was also just updated. The controls feel better now, IMO.

Is it just like Knight's onrush? Theres a demo for that, I think that came out before, and Knight's rush is the sequel.....or the full game. Tempted to buy it.

Knights Onrush is more tower defense. Knights Rush (the sequel) is more like Castle Crashers. Both games are worth the 99 cents, IMO.

I just bought Knight's Rush and loving it all ready! The controls also work pretty fine for me.

Just played it a bit more, this game is a total steal for its price (sale or original), so damn gorgeous, fun, slick, fast and polished. Love it.

I'm not really feeling Cut The Rope. I see what it's doing and I admire the polish but it just isn't luring me back in to keep playing.

I went to buy 'Shoot The Magic' earlier and noticed that it's free at the moment. Nice little touhou-style shooter for those that like that kinda thing.

I got caught up in the hype and bought it too. Looking forward to giving it a blast.

If 'featured games' sell and are picked by Apple, then Sega has hit paydirt with Sonic (It's about a week since release). No wonder they're going down this path!

#4 in Top Grossing Apps AU, #35 in Top Paid Apps AU

Fuck. :(

I had the same problem. Clear Game Center and Cut the Rope from memory, load up Cut the Rope and complete a level, and then re-load Game Center. Worked for me.

I just got Gamecenter, folks. The username is the same as my gaf username. Add me!

will do.

If anyone hasn't added me yet, feel free to do so. Gamecocks625

That said, I think I'm going to take the plunge with Sonic 4 once I see what their update will consist of. PES 2011 releases in the US next week, too.

It's raking in some serious cash so probably not anytime soon :lol

Has Angry Birds ever been free for a day? There's a Lite version of CtR, and it's sitting at the top of the paid/grossing app lists. It would be odd for them to make it free for a day.

Didn't work. :( thanks, anyway.

Hopefully gets fixed in an update.
